Yes they are both correct format, but as a wiki standard we tend to have screenshots saved as a .jpg and icons as a .png. It helps keep the templates clean and things consistent. -Darqam 02:33, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

Adding a little more. Both are accepted for file uploading yes, but .png is not the correct choice for screenshots or any particularly large image as, other the fact they don't fit the templates, they are normally double, and sometimes even triple, the size the same image would be in .jpg and not very browsing friendly. This is why .png files, other than icons and user images that are uploaded for usage in User space, are converted to .jpg. - Do_odleplex 03:12, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
