Intro[edit]

One of the more popular data-gathering modes on reddit and youtube is to collect several hundred to a few thousand of a particular type of champ bag and see what you can get out of them. This was the subject of 3 different farms that I'm aware of: the Frostgorge Sound champ train, the Silverwastes shovel train, and long-term gathering in WvW. Each time, the player was primarily concerned with showing which exotics were associated with the champ bag in question, or what quantity of materials one could get from salvaging the stuff inside. While interesting initially, the usefulness of these sessions started to wane because the few people who were doing them kept going after the same bags. So, when I decided to give this a try, I wanted to go after something different.

The main criteria for selecting a target were:

  1. The bag could not be an overfarmed champ bag. Therefore, no bandit, mordrem, svanir, or icebrood bags.
  2. The champs had to be fairly numerous or respawned quickly; otherwise, gathering would take way too long.
  3. I had to be able to solo them without difficulty.

And thus for the last 6 months I've been waging a one-man war on Ogres ;D

The initial target was for 500 Ogre bags , with a goal to determine what kind of things could be learned from a statistical study. Mostly, I think it's going to be a relearning of things that have been forgotten; one thing I've seen in the results so far is that each item has a chance for a 'lucky drop' - you can get significantly more money or materials depending on chance. Hopefully I can find a few exotics to satisfy what most people are looking for ;D

Notes[edit]

  • Opening and recording results is an awful slog, and I've been doing it on and off for a long time. At the 229 bag mark, a major change to champ bags was made, and they no longer produced just the base set of equipment drops. In their place, the bags would give one Piece of Unidentified Gear. This will likely skew the results for gear drops from this point forward.
