Anyone have any tips on how to get these? I mean I've been gathering coral for so long now I'm wondering if this thing even exist(haven't even gotten a single one yet!). --Eruru (talk) 20:52, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

Figured I'd update this for anyone who is at same as point as I was: find a coral farming guide and do it on all your characters. Got about roughly 3 of them per run I'd say. --Eruru (talk) 10:03, 17 March 2016 (UTC)
As someone who parked 8 alts in Sandswept Isles (5 easy nodes), thus gathering 40 nodes/hr, still 0! drop after 400 nodes and almost every second strike coral orb. I decided to move all 8 alts to Aquabase Terror Seven in Mount Maelstrom. By this move I was able to get at LEAST 1 Vial of Manganese Dioxide per run (from approx. 8-16 nodes per run, avg 2 nodes available at time x 8 characters). I assume every node which shit on you with coral orbs (especially all LS3/4 maps) won't give you vials and if yes, drop rate is waaaay lower than from nodes which gives you coral orb once per 10 strikes (basically all nodes in core maps). As advice, if you want to farm coral nodes with hope to get Vials of Manganese Dioxide, do it on core maps. Avoid LS3 / 4 maps! Amidare (talk) 11:18, 21 February 2019 (UTC)
YES to the above! After getting zilch off of LS maps I went to Orr (Straits of Devastation specifically) and got 3 of them in very close proximity. My experience is consistent with the hypothesis that not all Coral nodes have the same drop chance for this item. --Andred (talk) 04:17, 28 February 2019 (UTC)
I've also had 0 drops from LS3 through POF and LS4 maps. I'm amending the page so that the reader is pointed to using the core Tyria maps. --Hesione (talk) 02:32, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

Found approx. 40 nodes across all maps, had 1 drop. --ShortnCurly (talk) 14:58, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

I recently farmed all 10 Vials of Manganese Dioxide in about 5 days. Core maps give you the drops. I parked 7 characters in Mount Maelstrom near aqua base terror seven. There are typically 3 to 4 nodes here. Each character was equipped with a guild gathering boost (which increases chances of getting rare materials from harvesting by 20%) and a gathering booster (which gives a 33% chance of getting extra resources when gathering). A glyph of plenty is also helpful, but I did not have one. One note of caution do not use a sickle with a glyph other than a glyph of plenty. I harvested over 100 corals in core maps with a sickle equipped with a glyph of leather and received no drops of Vials of Manganese Dioxide. As soon as I switched to a sickle without a glyph, I received one Vials of Manganese Dioxide every 28 corals nodes on average. 05:32 UTC, 5th September 2020‎ — Peace Keeper.9623

Drop rate?[edit]

Across all characters, I've collected over 170 nodes, and have yet to get one of these from a drop. Doleperfection (talk) 01:10, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

As painful as 1 in 40 from the above comment sounds, 0 in 170 seems pretty unlikely. Are you sure this part of the collection is active? SarielV 20 x 20px 14:22, 27 September 2017 (UTC)ack
Sadly yes, I have nearly everything on there except the purple paint and all the colour studies completed, was waiting till I get this to start and do them all together. :( Doleperfection (talk) 01:10, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
I'm sincerely hoping this is a bug caused by the drop of the expansion, and that some GM will swoop in and tell me it's been fixed and I can finish the legendary already. Doleperfection (talk) 05:09, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
I was having the same bug, but ever since the last patch I've gathered two vials (one in Siren's Landing; one in BFF). Yay silent bug fix? --Imry 02:58, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
I'm glad you got some! I'm still experiencing this, had to take a break from the game because I've farmed around probably 1000 nodes across all characters and have yet to get a single one. Contacted support back in January to see if it was due to an account problem but they said no. --Doleperfection (talk) 01:10, 15 April 2018
Follow-up to this second attempt at contacting them about it, all they said was that I need to have the collection open & active, and sent me to look at coral farming routes. Like, I'm ~70% done the collection, and just waiting for the coral to drop this Vial of Manganese Dioxide to make purple paint and then I'm done, I know I need the collection active..... And I told them how many I've harvested and they just refer me to this page and tell me to look at harvesting routes? I've harvested so many of the darn things I could write a guide from memory! --Doleperfection (talk) 01:02AM CST, 17 April 2018
If you are having issues with the drop rate, I would suggest using the rare drop boosts - maxed Guild Gathering Boost (consumable) gives you 20%, Guild Gathering Banner gives you 10%, Guild Gathering and Swiftness Banner and Guild Heroes Banner gives you 15% (banners bonus doesn't stack). I was gathering for few days without the boosts and was getting nothing, when I equiped the boosts I got 2 Vials out of 6 nodes. Also, I would reccommend the Bitterfrost Frontier map for a daily "farm" - it has 6 nodes fairly close to each other, in the water in the middle of the map. Gosainthan (talk) 18:56, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

I just did a farm in drizzlewood. I got a drop from it! That being said Bitterfrost frontier (4 easy nodes) and Siren's Landing (5 node?) got 0. So so far Drizzlewood should be in the confirmed list. It has a lot of Coral. I will see to how high drop rate is. Moun maelstrom was easiest by far to find the Corals in my opinion. Small pool, not to deep, not to many monsters. I have screenshot of this drop if anyone needs it.

Drop rate may have been tweaked?[edit]

My own experience so far does NOT bear out the above complaints. Randomness is a capricious mistress, but I've run three characters (with gathering boosts) through Bitterfrost Frontier (LWS3) today, once each, and dropped seven of these. I also spent quite a bit more time running around Orr and other zones, mostly burining up my boost time in travelling from place to place, and getting very few coral nodes and no Managnese drops. I may have just been incredibly lucky, which could, clearly, change - but it seems more likely that the drop rate has been tweaked. In which case, BFF is by far the easiest map to run - especially if you have a decent number of alts. Doghouse13 (talk) 13:43, 13 August 2019 (UTC)

Update: In the end I had to gather 63 nodes on total to collect the 10 vials needed for my Legendary collection (The Bifrost III: The Legend) - a 15% drop rate. Basically I ran BFF 8 times on alts, plus various other maps once on my first character (which, as indicated above, got me nothing). My buffs were mostly picked up from the copious banners around the Elder Wood farm at the statue of Melandru west of Paga's WP in Malchor's Leap. One interesting observation: on the first 4 alts I was also running an Item Booster giving a 33% chance of an extra gathering strike; harvesting 39 coral nodes, I never once got an extra strike. Not one. I make the odds of that approximately 1 chance in 500 - not impossible by any means, but definitely suggestive. Doghouse13 (talk) 14:32, 13 August 2019 (UTC)

Using a Harvesting Sickle of Bounty (no boosts), I gathered from 30-40 nodes on Core maps and got nothing. Using the sickle, Guild Gathering Boost (consumable), and Guild Heroes Banner, I got 4 vials with 5 characters across 6 nodes in Bitterfrost Frontier, and another 5 vials (!) from 9 nodes in Drizzlewood Coast. I'm sure the boosts helped, but from what I've seen, lower level maps produce less to no vials, and LW maps do produce vials. Firelizzard (talk) 14:24Z, 2021-5-12.

Just gathered 5 in core Tyria and 5 in Living Story maps over approximately an hour using only 2 characters without any boosters but with glyph of bounty. SUPERGOD6 (talk) 17:18, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
