Text[edit]
- Welcome to Osbert Bleake's Nightmares for Naughty Children, a series of children's books designed to scare the snot, wit and spittle out of them.
- Read it.
- In times woefully recent, two orphans ran away from their village avoid the city orphanage. Kadmiel and his sister, Kamden, vowed they would never live there, no matter what.
- Read on.
- They traveled into the forest as it began to snow. The children found a cave and huddled together, listening to the night noises. When dawn came, they found footprints in the snow.
- Read on.
- The indents were so large and deep, Kadmiel whispered, "It must be a jotun."
- At which, a booming voice asked, "Who hunts in my glen?"
- Read on.
- The kids ran, and the jotun pursued, footfalls shaking the ground—closer and closer—until an enormous hand closed around Kamden's arm and lifted her off the ground.
- Kadmiel turned back. "Let go of my sister!"
- Read on.
- "Why are you in my forest?" The jotun's eyes were angry and its teeth sharp.
- Kadmiel, being agile of mind, answered, "We... we came to slay the ancient buck that killed my father."
- Read on.
- The jotun frowned. "Ancient buck?"
- Kadmiel nodded. "My father found it, not far from here. Up the ridge, there. It gored him, and he died. It's probably there now."
- Read on.
- The giant narrowed its eyes at Kadmiel, then dumped Kamden into a snow bank and disappeared into the forest. The kids ran back to the village and went happily to the orphanage. The end.
