Whitman's Folly[edit]

Scene 1 Murder[edit]

Scene starts with an individual sitting in a chair in what seems like an abandoned warehouse reading the Daily News while drinking his whiskey and smoking a cigar, he appears to be waiting for someone. He is confronted by an angry woman, which unknown to the audience is his niece. The two argue about his abandonment of her in his will (he has no children of his own), her back towards the audience, she grabs a knife out of her pocket and stabs him in the neck, he falls, dead and lays on the floor, in a pool of his blood. She then grabs the empty whiskey bottle and strikes him one more time to finish the job. She rushes out the door, leaving him lying there upon the floor --lifeless. After which, the stage goes dark.

Scene 2 Crime Scene[edit]

Stage re opens with two inspector police officers, a coroner, named Jones, and several police who are blocking off the crime scene. The two inspectors investigate the body, one a man and the other a woman. The woman, named Welsh, is the most tendered at the job and the young man, named Wallace, is her deputy-inspector. She casually leans toward the body;

[WELSH]: Hmm, by the looks of this body and the lack of defense wounds, I say he knew his attacker.
[WHALES]: Here, Welsh, this is his I.D. We found it on the floor near the door.
[WELSH]: Thank you, Whales. His name is Jonathan Whitman. Why would a well-dressed man be here, in an abandoned house? Doesn’t make sense unless he was waiting for someone…
[WALLACE]: I agree, the striations on his knees and face seem to be as if his attacker forced him on the ground and hit him one more time.
[JONES]: That is exactly right. By the looks of him, his cigar was the last thing he ever enjoyed. Also, I must make a note that he appears to have been struck twice; once that killed him and the other post-mortem. I will know more when I get Mr. Whitman on the table.
[WALLACE]: Ok, thanks Jones, when can we come and ask you? Welsh, how should we proceed?
[JONES]: Give me about 4 hours.
[WELSH]: First, I would like to interview any close family of is. Find out if he has any sons or daughters, will you Wallace? I will find more on his failing health.
[WALLACE]: Yes ma’am. You (He points to police officer 2), can you help me gather information on whatever family this man has?
[KORAN]: Sure thing, Wallace!
(WALLACE, JONES, WELSH, both KORAN and ADAMS leave stage, leaving others there. Stage goes dark as everyone walks off. Curtain closes)

Scene 3 Hidden Message[edit]

Curtain is closed. Wallace walks towards his desk and begins working, two minutes past by and Koran casually walks up to him with two files.

[KORAN]: Wallace, I have the two files you requested. We discovered that Mr. Whitman has no children but five nieces and nephews. They all live scattered across the country but three of them are in town. (He hands Wallace the first envelope)
[WALLACE]: Thank you, what’s in the other envelope?
[KORAN]: Sorry Wallace, I don’t. Adams, do you know? (Adams walks out from stage right with a coffee mug in hand)
[ADAMS]: No, it was sent straight for Wallace.
[WALLACE]: Thanks guys.
[KORAN & [WHALES]: No problem.
[KORAN]: Adams, you got any extra for me? (He walks off-stage)
[ADAMS]: (off-stage) Yeh, there’s some extra.
[WALLACE]: (opens the envelope and discovers that it’s from his friend regarding Welsh’s brother’s death.) Interesting… (Picks up the phone on his desk and dials Welsh). Welsh, we have some info on Whitman’s family. Yeh, I’ll meet you at the address.
(WALLACE gathers his things, walks off to stage right, curtain opens to reveal a home, WALLACE and WELSH enter from stage right)
