Lathrone, Assassin turned Templar[edit]

Lathrone is technological mastermind hailing from Divinity's Reach. From a young age he showed a strong passion for engineering, working with his father on advanced siege weaponry and defenses for the fight in the mists. His spare time was spent on his many inventions, making and designing anything and everything his genius could come up with. Upon finishing his education with astounding results, he was immediately approached by an undercover Assassin that had been sent to recruit him under the brotherhood. Despite being unsure, his curiosity eventually would get the better of him and he would officially join the Assassin brotherhood on the eve of his nineteenth birthday.

The leader of the Assassin's, who would become Lathrone's mentor, had told him he had been recruited to advance their weaponry and greatly improve their aggressive potential in the timeless war against the Templar order. Lathrone had been called a 'prodigy' by many of the higher ranking members of the brotherhood; his engineering excellence had propelled the Assassin's to new heights. However, Lathrone never stopped to think what his work could be doing, only that he was being paid a good amount of coin and that he was being given access to resources that no legitimate occupation could offer.

Although Lathrone's duty was not on the frontline, he did have a close encounter with the Templars when he was 25 year old. They had sent a scout to poach Lathrone's services for their own uses - the scout told Lathrone that the Templar order could offer him far more than the Assassin's ever could. But despite not having any concrete ties to the brotherhood, Lathrone decided to remain loyal and continue his work for the Assassin's.

Lathrone's interests thus far had only been in his inventing, designing and engineering. However, during an unseen Templar attack on the brotherhood, Lathrone had learned about an incredible artifact known as a piece of Eden. The piece of Eden was in possesion of the current Templar Grand Master, Jaood. The brotherhood had been crippled by the attack, but intrigued and unswayed, shortly after Lathrone confronted his mentor about the artifact. He had admitted that he knew of the artifact and told Lathrone it was created by 'those who came before'. However, he also explained that the artifact contained 'uncontrollable power' and that the Templar order were 'extremely dangerous' while in posession of the object. The very next day, Lathrone would disappear without notice to go on a journey in an attempt to find out more about the special artifacts.

After several years of travelling, Lathrone returned home none the wiser. Upon returning he was met by a hostile Assassin scout informing him he had been expelled from the brotherhood and that his services were no longer required. Confused and dismayed, Lathrone attempted to make contact with the leader of the Assassin's. Lathrone had found his ex-mentor and aproached him before being swiped to the ground by a seemingly magnetic energy. The Assassin turned to face Lathrone who was stunned on the ground. He was holding a glowing object that seemed to shackle Lathrone to the floor. The Master Assassin told Lathrone that his judgement had become clouded by his obsession over the ancient artifacts and he could no longer trust him in the brotherhood. He warned Lathrone to never attempt to contact the brotherhood again and that he could 'crush' him in an instant if he so desired. However, the Master Assassin would eventually let Lathrone go free due to his previous service to the brotherhood. Before Lathrone could respond, the Assassin disappeared in a bright blast of light.

Although Lathrone had no concrete evidence, he knew deep down inside that his old mentor was wielding one of the artifacts he had been so desperate to research about. He also saw that the artifact wielded by the Assassin was not the same as the one used by Jaood in the attack on the brotherhood. Lathrone felt betrayed by the Master Assassin after coming under the assumption that he had had the artifact the whole time. Lathrone once again disappeared, this time for 5 years after once again returning home with purpose. Lathrone's curiosity had once again got the better of him. By this time he was 33 years of age and 8 year after their initial offer, Lathrone would eventually join the Templar order. However, he had made a deal with Jaood; he would exchange his services for all the information Jaood knew of the seemingly magical artifacts. Jaood agreed to the deal; he thought that armed with this knowledge, Lathrone could even be capable of re-inventing similar objects. Lathrone would learn that Jaood's artifact was a piece of Eden, a glowing magical sphere capable of unfathomable powers. Jaood had had it mounted onto a solid golden haft, creating a mace-like weapon which partly disguised the artifact. The Templar-forged weapon was an object capable of devastating damage under the command of someone who knew how to control it. Lathrone would learn more and more about the artifacts, he learned of a precursor race that created them and slowly worked towards finding out how their powers worked.

To the present day, Lathrone is still working under the Templar banner with his primary goal of working on the pieces of Eden. However, Jaood has always known something Lathrone does not - that Lathrone is infact one of a rare breed, a hybrid of human and precursor races. With this knowledge Jaood is certain Lathrone can eventually crack the code of the ancient artifacts, although to what end remains unknown.
