Overcomplicating things[edit]

So now instead of editing one page, people have to edit/check two pages? This is not a good change imho as I am not a fan of overcomplicating things, it should just stay on the main page. ~Sime 17:44, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

Indeed.
  • My performed actions:
    • I modified the template,
    • readded the template to the main page (nobody wants to add six rows of data compared to two entries, namely date and fish)
    • added a year suffix to this page name such that we can archive it per year.
  • Still to do:
    • At the end of the year archive the table on this page and start a fresh one on the main page.
    • Lowercase this page name to Daily catch list 2022, or Daily Catches (2022), etc...
    • Probably introduce a better template code seperator, for example: 2022-08-23;Petrifish and 2022-08-23;Petrifish;after the [[Game updates/2022-08-23|update]].
    • Fine-tune the template code.

No there was suppose to be just one page that players would be updating and a template that would take the fish from that page and put it at the merchant page with .. if possibly more information. Sadly because people with the knowledge of templates could even get to that someone moved and deleted the pages. At the end everyone is confused even those who were working on that project. And I will finish it with my sas as always. If you would ask before sticking your nose into something you know nothing about . Then you might know more. So go ahead, do it yourself. --DiegoDeLaHouska (talk) 18:42, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
So let's break it down:
  • "No there was suppose to be just one page [..]" - unless there wasn't, there was the main page with a manual edit containing the last daily catch (with 6 rows of data that nobody is going to add) and then there was this page containing all the data.
  • "Now if someone with template knowledge could connect this little table with the list on the subpage that would be lovely. All information like region, hole, bait and so on doesnt need to be but it would be lovely if it could." - this is a comment from the main page that should explain your action as well as request further edits from other users. We have talk pages for such cases, using those simplifies things a lot.
  • "Sooner or later the page would start to lag because of so much on it." versus "that someone moved and deleted the pages" (note: move without redirect) - although the page could easily handle more than two or three years, it makes sense to split per year, that's why I moved and added the year suffix.
  • Finally, guessing your actual intend:
    • Move the data to a subpage.
    • Add SMW to the template such that the first row fish entry can be obtained.
    • Remove the large data table from the main page.
    • Add a new result format template that queries for the first fish entry on the subpage.
    • Display additional informations in the result format template.
So far I think I failed to understand that main idea were the steps 2-4 as I only implemented step 1 and 5. This would mean that we need an extra SMW property (either one plain text property or even three if we want a record containing a date and fish) and involves lots of caching issues and purge requests to make sure that the most recent fish is displayed. --Tolkyria (talk) 19:20, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
Alright got some free time to try explain it better . The "No there was suppose to be just one page [..]" there was suppose to be "wasn't". That was just my hands been quicker than my brain. The idea was to change it to reaserch container page style where you would have all the data that is no longer needed on second page and having only the todays fish showing on the main page. If it would be the way it is now or having the item infobox showing how it's on the fish page that would be up to you. About the lag. It wouldnt lag probably till next 10 years but one day it would . This way of having the historical information on another page and not letting it show on the main page would in my belives help. Could be the same way we have Legendary weapon/table. Information on sub page showing on the main page but with the fish it would be showing just the todays fish and not the rest. And lasty yes Im sorry for myself. Last 2 months were just really busy so I didnt really has strenght to fight over details of this. --DiegoDeLaHouska (talk) 16:41, 28 December 2022 (UTC)
