kewl. source?

The original source was from here [1], but they misheard the name Regina corrected them here [2]. Also, remember to sign your name with four tildes (~) - Giant Nuker 15:12, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

it's a dog[edit]

Hate to say this, but the thorn mastiff is down as a type of dog in the dog article, and i think its highly likely that it has the same skills. Therefore, it shouldn't have its own place in the animal companions category box :/ Thering 19:40, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Wolves instead of "dogs"?[edit]

Shouldn't these be in the category with wolves? The nightmare court's corrupt mastiffs are called "Thorn Wolves", after all. 173.190.36.40 16:57, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Still, a Mastiff is a dog, not a wolf, so unless we decide to add the two categories together (which would be logic since dogs are basically tamed wolves) I'd say leave it as a dog.--Mark, User talk:Markisbeest het Beest 17:11, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
I assume the creator of the category dogs went by biological classification, where wolves are subdivisions of dogs (but not domestic dogs). Like how tigers are subdivisions of cats. - Infinite - talk 19:47, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
Also, Thorn Wolf is a different creature, that could be found in Urgoz's Warren in GW1. Not sure they would be in Magooma now, though, so might be a coincidence, or a naming accident. But, my bet is that it's the creature from GW1.--89.27.91.65 20:28, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
It has no relation to GW1's thorn wolves, it seems. It is identical in appearance to our "Fern Mastiffs". 98.19.155.178 20:42, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Oh, and here's the source. 98.19.155.178 20:44, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Fern Mastiff ?[edit]

This video calls the pet a Fern Mastiff. Is it a subtype or did we misspell it all this time ? I'd like to know if anyone knows better. -Alarielle- 16:58, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Probably a subtype, seeing the source at the top of the page...--Mark, User talk:Markisbeest het Beest 18:26, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Oh, yeah. I feel stupid now for not noticing that link ^_^ -Alarielle- 18:03, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Cù Sìth?[edit]

Sylvari most likely evolved from the Irish mythological Aos Sí, also known as Aes Sídhe. Aos Sí legend has references to a dog like creature that resembles the thorn mastiff called the Cù Sìth. the Cù Sìth was said to be an large, coal-black hound with glowing or flaming eyes. The Cù Sìth was feared as a harbinger of death and would appear to bear away the soul of a person to the afterlife. however in scottish mythology it is Roughly the size of a cow or large calf, dark green in color with shaggy fur and a long braided or curled tail. The creature was capable of hunting silently, but would occasionally let out three terrifying barks that could be heard for long distances. source is [3]. Locke And Load

Great find; I'm pretty sure it's been stated that the Sylvari are based on the Aes Sidhe.
However, I feel that we still can't say that they're based on or related to the Cu Sith. If, in-game they have a variety of barks (which they probably will, but at this point we don't know) then I feel that this could be considered relevant trivia. Aqua (T|C) 00:10, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Merge[edit]

I think it should be merge, because it is (for me) obviously the same. The animal companion in the game is currently named Fern Mastiff. I have not seen any animal called Thorn Mastiff. While I know this name came from an official interview with Ree, I think this was just the original idea, but the name ingame is Fern Mastiff. Balwin 14:54, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Wait until we get into the Sylvari (and Asuran) areas. We still haven't seen so much of the game, its really a toss up for if this is the Fern Mastiff or a second plant dog until we either see the areas or get official comment. 69.245.145.219 15:00, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
