Unfair? Or "unique"?[edit]

Not quite sure how I feel about this one. The Thief seems to have 3 unique mechanics: "Steal", "Initiative", and "Dual Skills". While it is by far my favourite class, it seems a little unfair that they get so many unique things while most other professions get 1 or at most 2 (Necro: Life Force and Death Shroud; Warrior: Adrenaline and Burst Skills; Guardian: Virtues; Ranger: Pet; Elementalist: Attunements). 68.144.77.185 05:25, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Head to forums if you're looking for a discussion. This page is about the article. 96.48.131.210 05:45, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
Since I am allergic to forums, I'll just quickly add that all of those mechanics are pretty lesser than, say, a complete extra skill/constant damage boost, constant extra ally, quadruple weapon skills available, etc., etc. I'd say "unique." Dual skills and Initiative are kind of linked like the Adrenaline/Burst, Life Force/Death Shroud, so it seems more like just having two mechanics as opposed to one for the other professions. And both of them seem weaker than the other professions' things, so it seems more of a "Jack of all trades, master of none" profession that can hit kind of hard. --ஸ Kyoshi User Kyoshi sig2.png 17:59, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
Am I wrong or does it have been said that the ranger will be able to stealth also? Lytalm 20:25, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
It was said that the ranger has a skill that allows it to use stealth, I'm certain of that. I just don't remember where it was said. EiveTalk 21:35, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
Stealth wasn't mentioned here as an ability unique to thieves, so it's moot to bring it up. =P --ஸ Kyoshi User Kyoshi sig2.png 21:46, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
Every class has unique mechanics, but I wouldn't consider dual skills terribly special since the thief wouldn't be much different with all the slot 3 skills tied to main hand weapon. I think dual skills add variety, but not extra ability. Steal and initiative on the other hand are the defining mechanics of the thief class and change the gameplay completely. I'd say dual skills are comparable to a rangers choice of pet skills, or an eles conjured weapons. Stealth on the other hand is more like distortion or aegis, but imo since you can still be hit while in stealth it's like a more offensive version because of the backstab... Any word on whether or not the ranger's stealth will have a backstab as well? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 209.141.203.73 (talk).

"Light"[edit]

Do you mean torch? Aqua (T|C) 02:16, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

I though that as well, but Thief can't use a torch. It means if there isn't an weapon in the off-hand. Changed it to reflect that. Mattsta 04:39, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
Went to a video to look for a different Thief skill, and it actually says Light in-game. Going to leave it as No Off-hand as it is more clear. Mattsta 05:01, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Dual skills for having only a main hand weapon[edit]

Are these basically just reskins of the using 2 of the same weapon (except for Sword obviously) dual skills? My roommate just told me these exist, I was intrigued. Mango 01:44, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Disabling Shot (thief shortbow skill)[edit]

Is this also a Dual wield skill? Sure, the shortbow is only a single weapon, but does it benefit from the traits which are listed on this page? And shall we add it? Gnarf 13:54, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Care to elaborate? The shortbow is not a dual skill and I'm not sure I see how it benefits from the skills on the page. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 14:09, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Oh, perhaps you are mixing up dual skills with 2-handed? Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 14:09, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Nope. I wonder because it's a third slot skill, which are Dual wield skills. I think it would be awkward if the shortbow is the only weapon without uses for those traits. That's all. Gnarf 14:14, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Oh I see. Then I suppose the shortbow will share the same awkwardness as the harpoon gun and the spear. A dual skill refers to the fact that a user has 2 items equipped. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png
I see your point, but it's still awkward. However, that's just my opinion. Gnarf 08:26, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
You can't dual wield a two-handed weapon, so no. - Infinite - talk 09:13, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
You can't dual wield it, but it does take two hands working together to fire a bow, one for the bow and one for the arrow. I think the shortbow will be underpowered if skill 3 is unaffected by the many dual skill buffs available. I'd suggest making the traits that refer to dual skills instead refer to slot 3, or they could slightly modify the skill description and call it a dual skill (eg. throw caltrops at your foe and do an evasive leap away while firing an arrow. with the same effect and dmg that it has now) the caltrops aren't an offhand weapon, but you'd still be holding a bow and arrow in one hand and caltrops in the other. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 209.141.203.73 (talk).

(Reset indent) It does not have the skill type "Dual Wield", thus it is not a dual wield skill and is not affected by traits. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:33, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Sigils and Dualskill[edit]

since those skills use both weapons, do both sigils gets to proc? example wielding 2 sigil of fire would grant 2 times 30% chance to proc flame blast on a critical? or is only one weapon hand taken into account (and witch)?

I'm pretty sure that sigils are in effect regardless of which weapon is actually hitting your target. My warrior wields 2 axes, mainhand has a Minor Sigil of Bloodlust and offhand has a Minor Sigil of Fire, but I still cause flame bursts with the main hand skills.
However, the flame burst effect probably has a global cooldown, so having 2 Sigils of Fire probably wouldn't be very beneficial. Doubling up on sigils is probably only useful for those that give damage bonuses like Minor Sigil of Impact or those that lengthen conditions like Minor Sigil of Agony. I've used two Bloodlust sigils before, and while they do give 2 stacks per kill, they still cap at 25, which can be reached easily enough that you're better off using a different sigil. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 14:57, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Point of Offhand Light/Empty?[edit]

Is there any advantage besides having a different 3rd slot skill for not equipping an offhand? Losing 2 skill slots (4 and 5) and the bonuses of your offhand doesn't at all seem worth it just to have a different 3rd slot skill. Unless the 4th and 5th slots can be filled in with other skills somehow?--152.14.244.253 15:52, 11 September 2012 (UTC)
