— The King of All Cats's message to Tyrians on April Fools' Day
The King of All Cats, also called His Royal Majesty, First Claw of the Realms and Conqueror of the Sunbeam Throne,[1] is a legendary creature on Tyria from a children's story book who may or may not be real. He is supposedly responsible for sending out Chatoyant Elixirs which make people see visions of gigantic cats looming over major cities and the Eye of the North as well as normal-sized, hidden cats across the world.
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
Little is known about the origin of the King of All Cats aside from him being the conqueror of the so-called Sunbeam Throne. His meeting with Chauncey von Snuffles III is depicted in a children's story book titled Chauncy and the Sunbeam Snare which also involves Queen Jennah's cat Shadow who has sent Chauncey on an important mission.[2]
April Fools' Day 2020[edit]
The King of All Cats purportedly sent letters to the Pact Commander and other denizens of Tyria on April Fools' Day in 1333 AE. The letter contained the king's mysterious message about "a bunch of really important things" written in the Animal Tongue, his signature written in understandable New Krytan, as well as nine Chatoyant Elixirs which allowed anyone ingesting their contents to "peer beyond the veil" and see visions of gigantic cats looming over major cities and the Eye of the North. Due to the nature of April Fools' Day and the questionable contents of the elixirs, it remained unknown if such phased cats actually existed or were just a mass hallucination shared by Tyrians.[1][3]
April Fools' Day 2021[edit]
During the April Fools' Day festivities of 1334 AE, vendors discovered the Chatoyant Lens, a gifted accessory purportedly originating from the King of All Cats's treasuries, which would allow a person to view the gigantic cats all the time while wearing the accessory. The elixir and the lens also gave people the ability to view various normal-sized, hidden cats all over Central Tyria and eventually other, more distant regions. The elixir and the lens were now able to show the hidden and phased cats throughout the year instead of only during April's Fools festivities.
April Fools' Day 2024[edit]
During the April Fools' Day festivities of 1337 AE, the King of All Cats purportedly sent a reward in the form of the Celestial Invisible Cat Cape to any adventurer who participated in heroic feats across the realms of Tyria and Nayos while under the effect of Professor Smoll's Fool's Tall Tonic. During a conversation with the Pact Commander, Smoll indicated that the gigantic cats might not be a hallucination after all although the professor could not explain why the giant cats and the dogs led by the Ancient Canine had appeared.[4]
Notes[edit]
- The King of All Cats was first alluded to in the August 8, 2017 game update which introduced a book cart with one of the book titles being Chauncey and the Sunbeam Snare and depicting Chauncey von Snuffles III's meeting with the King of All Cats.

- Joe Kimmes: This year, we kind of fell back on one of my team's recurring jokes of like, "Cats are always funny." So, the April Fools' gag we did was, you get sent a letter by a character who has shown up occasionally in text, the King of All Cats, who tells you a bunch of really important things that you can't read, because it's written in cat, but also sends you a few tonics that you can use to, I don't know, peer beyond the veil and see invisible cats that you couldn't see before.
