GWW tools

I miss tools but I forget how to get them - something complicated with monobook.js was it? Anyhoo, anyone got them active so I can copy them to my .js or .css or whatever the hell it was? Yes, I'm still old. --snogratUser Snograt signature.png 03:04, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Poke made them for Guild Wars 1 wiki. They are not developed for the Guild Wars 2 wiki yet. User_talk:Poke#GWWT

Signature?

I wanted to ask if my signature conforms to the wiki rules: I made my best for it to do fit, but since I changed it some time ago, it reverted back to default. I am not sure if that was done by a Mod or was it a bug, but if a Mod did it, no information was left on my wall. If it doesn't conform, can I get some hints to fix that? Thanks SethreaUser Sethrea sig.png 11:23, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Sounds like a bug. Admins (to the best of my knowledge, and I've been at this awhile) do not have the ability to change the signature in your preferences, would not change it on you without leaving you a note even if they could, and your sig looks fine anyway. One thing I will note is that preferences are shared between here and GWW, so if you changed it there, that'd explain it, but otherwise chalk it up to the recent wiki bugginess and don't worry about it I think. - Tanetris 11:35, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I'm pretty sure I haven't touched on GW1 wiki, so I will assume it's a bug. SethreaUser Sethrea sig.png 12:27, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Recipes requiring Ingredient - Bullet List or Table?

I see that some Ingredient pages (e.g., Bag of Sugar) show the recipes requiring that Ingredient as a Bullet List, while other pages (e.g., Egg) show a table of the recipes. Is there a preference? As time permits, should Bullet Lists be converted to Tables, or vice versa? Beryl R 20:07, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

How do Infoboxes generate images?

I can't figure out how the infoboxes generate images associated with the page. For example, I edited the Dolyak page to add an infobox, and it is apparently trying to load dolyak.jpg, which is a broken image (error "Error creating thumbnail: /home/httpd/guildwars2/gw2/bin/ulimit4.sh: line 4: /usr/bin/convert: No such file or directory"), instead of the image I uploaded, which is dolyak_grazing.jpg. How do I tell the infobox to load my (working) image instead? Thanks in advance! Fleep 01:44, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Maybe just a caching problem? Looks fine to me, except the last edit was from an ip - forget to sign in? — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 02:20, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

quest Stealing secrets

it seems that personal story quest: stealing secrets is bugged. when I enter the instance nothing happens - those children just talk and that's it. There is no npc with the star above his head ? any idea of what's wrong? The preceding unsigned comment was added by 109.92.113.153 (talk • contribs) at 23:09, 1 September 2012 (UTC).

At the moment, the GW2W doesn`t have a page of that quest yet. Can you provide information so that the Community can create one for those who need help like you? User Yoshida Keiji Signature.jpg Yoshida Keiji (talk) 15:59, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
It's the first Order of Whispers quest. I believe referring to the part where Destiny's Edge meets? Go over toward Eir/Caithe/Logan/Rytlock/Zojja and they should start some lengthy dialogues you hafta sit through. If you mean the part after that, talk to the apple vendor. - Tanetris 18:35, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Actually, I have the same problem - the children play their game then nobody else says anything. Zojja is there, but no Eir/Caith/Logan/Rytlock. And this has turned into "ask a game question." — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 19:26, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Also, does this quest get added to Template:Asura storyline or is this stage of the personal storyline general, i.e. not race-specific? — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 19:30, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
I'm norn and I got it. - Tanetris 21:14, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
I suspected as much - branched storyline merge. Need a new template for the remaining storyline quests then. Probably - don't know how many there are yet ;) — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 22:03, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

when the children stop talking nothing happens. Logan is near the fountain but you can't speak to him . and there is no apple vendor at all. I am human by the way and it is Order of whispers story line in the personal story chain. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 178.223.145.59 (talk).

Deleting or redirecting a page

Is it possible to delete a page or to contact a moderator about this? Or just to contact a moderator because of redirecting? I found one item which seems to have a different name now - I am 100 percent sure. But can't remove that page or set it only to redirect(the other new name already has a different page here) because of security rules.

It is regarding the Black Truffle which is named Orrian Truffle now.

Same icon. Orrian Truffle is in the bank tab for Collections under Cooking Materials. Black Truffle not(anymore). But only the Black Truffle is listed at Ingredient.

I will try to change that link and name on the Ingredients page but something needs to be done about the Black Truffle page. - lordmd 18:44, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Bowl of Simple Poultry Soup

We have two separate and distinct recipes for this item. Any ideas? Beryl R 16:11, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Looking into this and expanding, Chef#Soup has the item listed twice with two recipes and skill requirements, Bowl of Simple Poultry Soup matches one of them. Best thing to do is have someone verify in game which is correct and remove/modify the incorrect one. I suspect the 50 skill one is accurate, but don't have it unlocked in game to verify. --Sepp 16:24, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Yellow Dye Ingredient Change

Update Notes, 8 Aug 2012 states 'Yellow Dye recipes now include Onions instead of Celery.' Can someone confirm for Unidentified Yellow Dye (Master) and Unidentified Yellow Dye (Rare)? Beryl R 03:42, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Editing edit comments

I'm new to wiki editing and I keep forgetting to set the comment line when I make an edit to a page. Is there a way I can go back and change my edit comment after it has been submitted? Tawnee 14:37, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Nope. If you really want to prevent yourself from submitting an empty change summary, you can go to your preferences, switch to the Editing tab and then tick the Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary option at the moment. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 02:08, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Image edit

I'm adding some icons to the Leatherworking page and I accidentally uploaded Coarse Glove Lining without the ArenaNet tag. I didn't see an edit image choice, so I just reuploaded it with the tag. Now the previous image is sitting there w/o the tag. Any way I can clean that up? Thanks Adonax 15:19, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

You can edit file pages the same way you do other pages, just click the "edit" tab at the top. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 15:38, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Page views

Is the line at the bottom of pages that said how many times a page had been viewed coming back? Was it removed accidentally, or is it just how the version of the software works now? Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 17:40, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Add an icon

im lvling Chef im discovering some recipes that aren't in your list and i want to add and put the icon but i cant insert the icon, can u tell me how add the icon?

That all depends on where you are trying to add it. If you are trying to add it to it's own page like Cinnamon Apple then you should have a lock icon that you would click to upload the icon. If you are trying to add it to the table. Then the first instance of the name will take you to where you can upload the icon. Anzenketh 04:54, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
It's easier to create the article first (copy the content from an existing article, then just change values in templates to match the item you're adding), then you'll see the "lock" icon in the infobox like Anzenketh mentioned, that links to the proper filename for the icon. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 05:43, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

Renaming a page

Defend the Lapatl Chieftain from the undead is incorrectly named. It should be 'Protect'. I have no clue how to go about renaming it or marking it for renaming. Em Jae 05:06, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, I've moved it. For reference, there's a "move" tab on the top of pages. Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 05:25, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, does it delete the old page when you move the info to the correctly named page?Em Jae 15:29, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
It doesn't, and I should have added a delete tag to the old page. I'll do that now. Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 18:25, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
Just FYI, the "move" link only shows up after a certain number of edits, so relatively new users won't see the "move" option. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 09:24, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Adding images

Hello there - I'd like to help out by uploading images of weapons and armour that don't yet have images, or have really poor images. I have no idea how to do this, and can't find out how to, either :) Could anyone help? For example, I want to add a high quality version of the off hand focus Courage to the page Courage (am I doing this right?!) - there is currently a poor quality preview image there. Thanks in advance. 192.168.104.82 11:16, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi, thank you for offering to help. To be able to upload images, you must first create a wiki account. Anonymous users cannot upload images. To actually get images to appear on some of the infoboxes, you can refer to the various formatting guideline pages to see the infobox parameters to use to specify image names. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 11:25, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! If you could help with one more step - I'm sure I read something about replacing old images when I was trying to find out how to do this. The image I want to upload is of Courage - which already has an image associated with it. My image is clearer, and shows it ingame rather than in a preview. Should I overwrite the old file? Change the old file to something else? Upload the new file with a different name? Thanks again Minkee 13:41, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
I re-re-read the guide, and it only stressed to save renders, rather than screenshots. So I am going to overwrite and cross my fingers that's correct :) Minkee 13:57, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
Overwriting an image is fine, and in fact, preferable, since the previous contribution is preserved. If an image has a poor name, it's also customary to move that image to a better and more appropriate name as well (although you may have to put in more edits before you can start to move things around). -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 02:33, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

How create level-grouped list of Renown heart NPCs?

Renown heart NPCs lists ALPHABETICALLY.
I would like to make a list BY LEVEL.
I see that each NPC has their level on it, in the info box.
Q: Can this level info be automatically used to group them by level?
-- Ssquester 07:25, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Why do you want that? There is no point in sorting them by level for any reason.--Relyk 08:15, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
(I love the way you categorically state that there is no point in doing so. You could have left out that sentence, and simply asked why -- I obviously have SOME reason, or I wouldn't be asking.)

I have a character at level 40. I would like to purchase the best accessories etc for that character. To do so, I need to visit all the Renown Heart NPCs at or slightly below level 40. Ssquester 08:02, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

So you really just need Harathi Hinterlands, Fields of Ruin (plus this one guy in Blazeridge Steppes, and Lornar's Pass (plus this one guy in Dredgehaunt Cliffs). That said, until you're buying level 80 exotic stuff, it's a lot cheaper to buy equipment off the TP. Karma's way more valuable later on than a couple silver. - Tanetris 08:34, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes, thanks. ***Question Closed***
(Details) At the time I wrote that question I was unaware of those lists. FYI lengthy discussion of how the current wiki design failed me re this topic. Talk:Renown Heart#I would like streamlined access to SPECIFICS Ssquester 11:17, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
(Update) And thanks to Yandere for wading through the lengthy discussion I link above, and making a simple addition of one section with 4 links closer to the top of the Renown Heart page, so that anyone else who comes along looking for such lists will promptly find them. Even though the consensus is that my failure (to scroll down and realize the nav table would serve my purpose) is not a typical reaction to that page. I appreciate having a wiki that works for a variety of browsing styles. Ssquester 11:40, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

WikiTables: Types of Classes

I'm trying to learn how to create tables. It seems i can't get vertical or horizontal lines to delineate each cell unless I give the table a class ie: Class="Table". However, what other types of table classes are there? I'm also aware of the class=" table" template and that i can pass various parameters that will change the color of the table header (parameters such as "warrior", "guardian", or "pve"). I'm currently bewildered how this wiki knows what 'Class="guardian table"' means. How/where does "guardian" specify a light blue color? How does this wiki know? Is there a page that lists these attributes? Is there a way to specify the header color of the table without using these somehow predefined classes? ~Mervil User Mervil Sig.png 02:53, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

Those classes are defined in MediaWiki:Common.css, and they are described at Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Table formatting. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 05:28, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

Consensus on format/location for "aggregate cost" of crafting a given item?

For Everquest II, crafters compiled "aggregate costs" of crafting each intermediate ingredient and final item. E.g. Pile of Cinnamon and Sugar has an "aggregate cost" of "8 copper + 1 logging", because it has two ingredients, 1 of which costs 8 copper, the other requires logging.
Opinions on how to standardize this information for crafting?.
A new line in infobox? A new section heading?.
Opinions on how to describe what said line or section means, so that it will be understood by readers? Ssquester 22:50, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

To give the concrete example that causes me to want this information:
* I've decided my avatar should eat Apple Pies for regen. I wish to equip with 100 pies. I go to trading post, pies are selling for 29 copper. I could buy 100, but I don't have an abundance of coins. I'd like to know what's the most cost-effective way to reach this goal, if I am willing to do some gathering. Do I come out ahead if I harvest the ingredients, and make the pies myself? Or harvest the ingredients, sell them at TP, and buy the pies that are there? Or go harvest/kill something totally unrelated, sell the results, and buy the pies?
* In this case, the facts are: pie selling for 29 copper. Aggregate cost of baking pie: 32 copper + 1.4 karma + 1 rare logging + 1 drop. Analysis: the TP price is lower than the aggregate cost, even ignoring the needed actions. Probably people are baking pies as part of chef leveling, and selling at a loss. (Probably not bot farmers, because they would only do profitable actions in bulk.) The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ssquester (talk • contribs) at 23:39, 8 October 2012 (UTC).
You're looking for a cost/profit calculator, which is much more easily and more flexibly accomplished by other fansites, such as gw2spidy.com. A wiki, which displays static data, is hardly suitable for displaying dynamic prices.
PS: Rather than typing <br /> all the time, you can just hit the "Enter" key. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 02:44, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Character selection screen

Sorry, really stupid question and probably the wrong place to ask to boot. The character selection screen is mentioned in various places but searching for it comes up blank. Do we have an article on the CSS? — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 09:47, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

The article Character creation has some information regarding creating and deleting of characters as well as name reservation. But other than that, I don't think there's. There could be, since it's quite relevant part of user interface. Mediggo 09:58, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

In game descriptions

For in game descriptions at the top of a page, should I include links to relevant articles or should I leave it as plain text?

For example, in Tiny Venom Sac, the in-game description is:

Crafting Materials Used to make Inscriptions.

So I put a link to "Inscription" on "Inscriptions" (I didn't know what they were, so I thought it would at least be helpful to me to have a link there). However, I'm not sure if I should leave them as plain text. The preceding unsigned comment was added by RiverTam (talk • contribs) at 23:39, 14 October 2012 (UTC).

Discuss editing of a page with a specific user

How can I discuss something with a specific user who reverted a change of mine quoting a "consensus" on a template and, as far as I can see, the page does not meet the specifications of the published templates?

suggestion

I was just wondering of there was a suggestion area for the wiki. Here is one i have for gw2:

- show percentages for each completion of each mapped are, the total area, each vista, PoI, Heart, and skill point, broken down into sections. The preceding unsigned comment was added by BlaisLight00 (talk • contribs) at 13:54, 5 November 2012 (UTC).

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to suggest. Are you talking about wanting templates that your character's completion percentage or are you suggesting we add some sort of calculation to area pages? -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 14:37, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Not Necessarily a bug...

Dark Asuran Greatsword page is incorrect, trying to edit through whole page edit option. the stats link to [Weapon infobox] which is either impossible to find and edit, or just really unnecessarily hard. just trying to change the weapon buffs to the correct in game description. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.6.122.253 (talk).

Thats just how infoboxes work, you can see some examples of how to fill them in on other pages such as on Eternity.
The variables you're wanting to fill in are similar to:
| minimum power = 995
| maximum power = 1100
| variables = powertoughnessvitality
--Chieftain Alex 09:58, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
To clarify, the weapon infobox to which you refer is actually a template. Searching for just "weapon infobox" finds nothing unless you subsequently click on the "everything" link, which finally gets you to Template:Weapon infobox wherein you will find all the info you require. — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 11:21, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Wyld Greatsword

This page should be deleted, as it is in essence just a Verdant Greatsword variant from a collector. Cexy Penguins 21:50 11, November (UTC)

If there is an in-game item with that name, the article stays and simply leave a note stating its similarity to the Verdant Greatsword.--Relyk 21:53, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
Okay. Then I would like to draw your attention to all articles containing "Aureate Highlander Sword" in the title. There are at least 3 of them, all describing differently runed/statted versions of the same sword. Seeing as there are articles about weapons specifically offered by Seraph Outfitter (tier 2) and a version of this weapon is offered by this outfitter, I'm not sure what should be done about these pages. Cexy Penguins 22:09 11, November (UTC)
Eventually all versions of the highlander sword will be found at Highlander sword, with a table describing each variation of stats and power. All weapons that are variations should redirect to that page. --Chieftain Alex 22:20, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
since all stats on a weapon besides damage is figured by the prefix and the rune, is there a table/project somewhere that records the damage for different weapons of different rarities and levels? Cexy Penguins 00:20 12, November (UTC)
You can always generate a simple table using dpl: User:Relyk/weapon.--Relyk 04:39, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

incomplete lists

sorry it seems like I've been asking a bunch of little things but I am super bored during the week and the wiki definately needs improvement. I'm working on bringing all the rare crafting material pages up to date and noticed that some articles that exist are not on the rare crafting materials page. I try to edit it and it seems like the category page is made up of a fixed list that cannot be edited directly from that page. How can I edit these kinds of things? Cexypenguins 23:43, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Could you link to the specific page that you're having problems with? —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 23:46, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
Do you mean that on pages like Category:Rare crafting materials you cannot add/remove pages directly? That is because category pages are populated by adding the category by editing the pages... this will seem unclear but the infobox generates the category. (example: Giant Eye is a rare crafting material that is on the category listing, but not noted on Crafting material)--Chieftain Alex 23:53, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
No that makes sense, thanks Alex; the materials missing do not have the category in their infoboxes, I'll fix that. Cexypenguins 00:00, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
Mmmm...how to edit infoboxes?
Show me the page you want to edit, and we'll do an example edit for you to copy! --Chieftain Alex 00:12, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
Onyx Fragment I want to take out the categorization as a crafting component and put it in as a rare crafting material Cexypenguins
Ok, first step is to see which infobox the page is using. This one uses Crafting infobox.
Second step; go to that template page and do a search for "rare crafting material" on the page. This results in finding that the parameter we want to set is type = rare.
Last step: make the edit. (check the result has worked using Preview, then submit if it has worked.) Questions? --Chieftain Alex 00:27, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
Okay I got it to work with onyx shard so think I'm good. thanks. Cexypenguins 00:35, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

links in tables

hey quick question. I have a table with the line minor sigil of strength or something to that extent; it links to the minor sigil of strength page; how do i change the text to "minor sigil of strength (master) without messing up the link? Cexypenguins 23:10, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

Minor Sigil of Strength Eearslya 23:13, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
Since the (Master) bit only denotes the rarity as a DMasterwork, I personally wouldn't bother, but you'd type Minor Sigil of Strengthif you needed it... which produces  Minor Sigil of Strength.png Minor Sigil of Strength (Master). (You'd have found out for yourself if you'd looked at the template usage directions by clicking on the link provided beneath the editing window "templates used in this preview..." :P ) --Chieftain Alex 23:17, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
thanks. and I don't believe the (master) denotes the rarity in this case since the normal minor sigil of strength is also of the masterwok rarity

Removing all the videos from the jumping puzzles

I'm curious to know why the videos on jumping puzzles are being removed.

They are very helpful guides as sometimes text just doesn't cut it. I found them extremely useful, which is why I started making them for the pages that didn't have videos. Now someone has gone along and removed all the videos from all the pages. Any reason for this? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tek Jin (talk • contribs).

If you want the videos, all you have to do is open youtube + type in the name of the puzzle. Since we cannot moderate the quality and content of the individual videos linked on youtube we do not plan to keep direct links. (every video uploader thinks that their video is superior and they keep changing the links to their own... which is annoying, especially when some videos skip key parts, are low quality, have loads of other people doing the same jump, loads of chat spam etc.) We may consider adding a link to a relevant youtube search for the named puzzle in the future. --Chieftain Alex 22:26, 18 November 2012 (UTC)
If that is the case, why not just pick 1 user who has made quality videos and link only to them? Alternatively, post strict, concise guidelines for video quality and style and I will create them for the Wiki. Otherwise, your link to the search is a good idea, but again, the quality of the results you get from that search are sometimes questionable. - Tek Jin The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tek Jin (talk • contribs) at 06:53, 19 November 2012 (UTC).
We're just wiki users with wildly differing ideaas of what makes for a "quality" video. I don't see why we need to get into a debate of what constitutes a "good enough" video to be "officially" linked from a wiki. When you have TWO "good enough" videos who meets all your criteria, which video will you take? The one from a more popular youtube account? More views? Longer duration? Better explanation? Clearer voice with no odd accents Asian players find hard to understand ? :) You get the idea. It just opens up a can of worms that will mostly end up wasting wiki users' times debating which video is better and what guidelines are the best, trying to "review" videos. If someone can't decide which videos returned by Google is the better one or how to search again... I don't really know what to say to that person. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 06:14, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
The main problem is people will remove the videos and put in their own--Relyk 06:27, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
That too. But I'm more concerned with this ending up in the same category of avoidable maintenance work like the guild pages were on GWW. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 07:25, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Branching dialogue and quest options

Is there some sort of policy for quests that have multiple possible outcomes/dialogue options and how they are presented? I'm currently trying to work on Complete the challenges presented by "Ref" Sparkeeper and every choice results in different dialogue and objectives. Obviously this is not super important since it's just random event dialogue but it seems to occur pretty often and if it's going to be captured I'd like to do it right, I just threw something up for now. template:recipe/requires

Ok this template has been given me a lot of trouble. I cannot seem to make the recipes for the items I put in the table show up. Do these items need to be logged into some database that this template draws information from before I can make the recipes show up or what? and what about mystic forge recipes? Cexypenguins 01:23, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Yes, the target item needs to exist on the wiki in order for that template to pull in the data. E.g. Passion Fruit pulls in data from the recipe template on Bottle of Tropical Dressing (among others), which in turn pulls data from Bowl of Salad a la Consortium.
Mystic Forge recipes use a different recipe template, mystic recipe, so we would need a different /requires template that pulls from that template instead. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 04:29, 22 November 2012 (UTC)
ok that does not make sense to me. I have for example the Orichalcum Pistol Barrel page and would like to put a recipe/requires template for the recipe for a Pearl Handcannon, as well as a Mystic Pistol. why is this not working/ what do i need to do to make it work?
That's because Pearl Handcannon doesn't use the recipe template. It's special, and fixing it won't be easy. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 05:46, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

How to create a new page

How do I create a new Wiki page? I want to start a work on my own guild page... --ICBM 11:26, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

You can make such a thing in your own space, i.e. pages that are a subset of User:ICBM, for example User:ICBM/Guild of Awesomeness. — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 11:50, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
All you have to do to create a new page is to type the page name in the search box or in the URL in your browser. The wiki will say "This page doesn't exist" or similar and then give you a link to create the page. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 13:26, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Naming Recipes: Learned recipe name vs Scroll recipe name

Last night, I was adding and editing Mara Ripsaw's page, fixing and editing pages her available items and such. It wasn't until I logged in today that I noticed the names of the recipe scroll items are different than the learned recipes as they appear in the crafting panel.

eg.

  • Scroll name - Recipe: Bloodsaw work gloves
  • Crafting panel name - Bloodsaw Leather Work Gloves (Master)

I tried searching for a correct format, but I couldn't find much of anything. Is there a correct way to name the Recipe pages? —Leviticus Lo 17:44, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

You're documenting an item, the recipe sheet, not the recipe itself. So use the item's name. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 20:06, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

More image questions.

I too would like to add images, I understand how to do this just a few other questions.

I don't have a good image program but the windows one works fine, I am cutting the part I wish to use out of my screenshots, but I don't have very good control over the pixel size this way, is there a set standard for size? ( I was thinking mostly about monsters and npcs) I did read the image info but not sure if I understand what it says.

And is it preferred to highlight the monster or npc in the picture?

And lastly, I'm not sure if I am naming my images correctly, do I need to add the ArenaNet tag to these kinds of pictures?

I am basically adding using the "if there is no image" and "I can do no harm" rules. Yoe Dude 03:10, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Typically for item icons, the size is a standard 64x64. For images of in-game creatures or NPCs, there is no set standard, but obviously crop it properly. You don't necessarily have to highlight them, but it might be nice to see their nametag. As for tagging, the small drop-down box that lists various copyrights, like icon, screenshot, etc. will do just fine. Eearslya 06:55, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your prompt answer. I tried a new image and saw the drop-down this time. I don't know how to change a few older images I uploaded, I looked at them but couldn't figure out how to fix. I guess I'll be having some fun uploading some new monster images this weekend. =)Yoe Dude 07:14, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
The copyright box is just a template. Just add icon or screenshot to the image's description, and that'll do the same thing. Eearslya 09:19, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Table or list of items offered by Renown heart NPC's

moved from Guild Wars 2 Wiki talk:Requests for technical administration

While searching for the Renown heart NPC's in Queensdale to see in one glance at what they offer after completing their heart, I realized there was no way unless i clicked on each heart and then on the renown npc. For a complete list of the karma merchants in Queensdale I had to click around until I got to the List of Krytan karma merchants to find a list of them all, and then I had to click on each one to see what they offered. I am specifically requesting for the items offered by Renown heart NPC's and NOT karma merchants, since one has to complete the heart in order for the items to be available, while the other karma merchants don't require heart/quest completion. I'm willing to do the leg work, just want an ok from the mods for either updating the above page, or creating a new one. Thanks. --Iceblue 13:39, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

How to get weapon skill icons without skill bar numbers for wiki?

I was wondering where people get the "clean" weapon skill icons from. Normal weapon skills can be grabbed from the Weapon Skill tab under H I guess but e.g. Environmental weapon skills or Costume Brawl skills will only appear on the skill bar itself. If I take a screenshot from that, there will be a skill bar number over the bottom of the icon. 08Ray 03:34, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Content

Is it allowed to use or copy the content of this wiki, for an other official GW 2 wiki in a different language? Id like to upgrade the PVP reward section for the german GW2 Wiki but i dont rly want to start at zero.

Since they're both official gw2w sites, where anet legally owns the content, there shouldn't be any problem with you copying the data. (just make sure its not full of mistakes :D ) -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 20:54, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
As long as you adhere to the GFDL, the license under which our content is available, you can use it for whatever you like. The main requirements the license gives is that you provide attribution to the original authors (you can see those in the page history) and republish the content in a compatible license (GFDL itself would be perfect :P). If you want to publish the content on the official German Guild Wars 2 Wiki, it is easy as all the official wikis are using GFDL and as such, you can share content around as you want—just remember to provide attribution, for example by linking to the original source in your edit comment. poke | talk 20:56, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Font Size GW2 Wiki

Are there viewer options for the GW2 wiki? I have above average eyesight but even I have a hard time reading the wiki sometimes because of the small typeset so I'm certain that others do too. And evidently the font size used for entering this question is so small that I can scarcely see it. There is little difference between 'c' and 'e'. Though the font itself is great. Very neat, as in tidy and minimalist. Though it would be easiest perhaps to change the default font size, it wouldn't be too hard to insert font-sizing coding in the webpage to preserve the original look by default while allowing an option for those of us who have trouble reading it. I've been meaning to create an account and would be happy to help on this if you all would like. Hoping for a favorable response, JRF

You could correct this issue for yourself by i) creating an account ii) setting up some custom CSS, e.g. Special:MyPage/monobook.css + then typing something along the lines of
element {
    font-size: 105%;
}
(you need an account to be able to setup custom css). You could also try zooming in, typically by holding CTRL + scrolling the mouse. (this would work without an account). I admit that this wouldn't keep everything looking normal in proportion, but adjusting everything would be too complex for me :p -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 16:39, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) You can zoom the page in your browser, Ctrl++ and Ctrl+- or Ctrl+mousewheel. Try Ctrl+0 first to make sure you're at 100% zoom to start with. (I know these work in Firefox, Chrome, and IE.) —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:41, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

I'm having trouble with an event template/infobox

Hi all, I'm trying to edit the page Escort_Agent_Rexx_as_he_delivers_supplies_to_Warden_spy_Alarin and add File:Agent_Rexx_start.jpg into the event template/infobox so that people know where he starts (it's a FAQ in my opinion). I added npc_map = File:Agent_Rexx_start.jpg to the page, but no map seems to pop up. Am I doing something wrong? That seems to make sense based on the infobox template to me. Let me know! Thanks, Demeric 19:36, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

You were doing it perfectly, its just that the documentation hadn't noted that you have to specify the start NPC in order for the map be processed properly. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, I'll go add a note to the infobox template! -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 19:42, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Bullet list issue?

When making a bullet list I am having some problems. In this example the little blue square will not appear: * heart I think this problem is any time you use the map icon|whatever after the "*". Yoe Dude 22:53, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Complete heart (map icon).png
Where are you trying to do this? Are you definitely using the bullet at the beginning of a new line? -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 23:13, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
I was looking over some stuff, I saw this on the Statue page wanted to fix it but couldn't get it to work. Yoe Dude 23:23, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
It's because the map icon template now floats the icon to the left, covering the bullet. If you're using an icon like that, you don't need a bullet anyway, because the icon takes the stylistic place of the bullet. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 23:46, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Ok, maybe it's the * event swords putting the square that is the odd thing, map icons and skill icons do not. I can use indent to remove this issue. Yoe Dude 00:25, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

It's doing that because every cell in the "Human" "row" has a rowspan. You'd have to add a hidden column to make that work - but I thought we had gotten away from the complicated rowspanned tables fad. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 01:18, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Internal link formatting

Is there a way to insert a link to the image page, not displaying the image (or it's thumb etc.) itself, other then format it as an external link? Malgalad 16:10, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Yep, you put a colon before the link. e.g. :File:User Chieftain Alex Bristol Airport.jpg gives :File:User Chieftain Alex Bristol Airport.jpg -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 16:41, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Won't start a new thread the same day. Another question: is it possible to make headings collapsible/expandable? Malgalad 21:08, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, as I think you know how to use expandable tables... could you expand on your description of what you want/give an example of where you'd like to use it please? -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 21:48, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
Well, it can look like in the mobile version of Wikipedia. So that you can hide/open content below the heading. This is for my research, I guess, with all ~1600 IDs it will take a looong time to scroll down the page. Malgalad 21:53, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
I can't find the exact js/css that tells the mobile version of wikipedia to convert headings into collapsibles :/ if you could find it and hack that up, that would be the perfect solution.
But I can get it close enough using something like User:Chieftain Alex/sandbox3. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 22:10, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
Close enough :) Relating js is here, css is just display:none / display:inline-block. Malgalad 22:39, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
Well, i figured out, why in GW2W [Show/Hide] button is shown above heading: it has margin-top 1.39em. Appropriate value is like 0.5em. I can make so with styles, but then it doesn't count as heading and thus doesn't show in page content list. Malgalad 23:14, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Dailies on front page?

Will there be a "Daily" section on the front page of the Wiki? I know that Dailies are listed under Achievements, and just 2 clicks away, but since Dailies are such a, well, daily part of the game, would it be appropriate to give it its own section on the front page? So that players can quickly see what they can do each day to earn karma, laurels and other rewards?

'Profession' Gear

Laurel merchants are selling 'Profession' Gear items with the Wiki filling in some pages quite quickly with drop possibilities (like Mesmer) and some rather slowly (like Elementalist). I was wondering if perhaps we could join the pages together into one (similar to Runes). I assume most people would only be interested in them with perhaps the following stats:

  • Rare to Exotic drop ratio or percents?
  • Do legendary precursors drop?

I 'assume' the actual drops, while finite in number, still do have a large number of possibilities (in hundreds if not thousands); I don't think it would matter listing every possible outcome. Lancour 13:47, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Drop rate subpages needs to be created for the gear pages. We are only concerned with the level and rarity of the weapon for rare items and the item name for named equipment.--Relyk ~ talk > 14:04, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
A combined drop rate research page for rarity/level would be useful, since the only plausible difference in drop tables is the restrictions on item types (engineer = light armor/rifles/pistols/harpoon guns/shields; elementalist = light armor/staffs/scepters/daggers/foci/tridents; etc.). Merging the item pages would just create an infobox mess. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 14:28, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Reformat links table

After Dr Ishmael created Game link, I was thinking about reformatting Chat links table - imo, it's not necessary to keep both link and ID if we now can transform ID into link. In my vision, table row will look like
827
and visualize like
ID Link Location
827 [&BDsDAAA=] Ash Tribune Quarters

As far as I searched the wiki, the closest templates are for skills. So, the first question is: I need to create one template for table rows, and another for the table itself, right? No way to make it in one tl? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Malgalad (talkcontribs) at 12:13, 3 May 2013 (UTC).

You don’t need a template for the table itself. You can just write the table stuff in normal wiki text and just use the template to quickly produce the code for each row. poke | talk 17:55, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
Were you thinking of templating the table header like Template:weapon skill table header? That template exists because of the need for precise and uniform layout formatting on skill tables: in case we ever change them, we only have to modify the template (like when Anet added activation time to skills, we added that to the skill tables) and all the tables will update. For this, a header template probably wouldn't be necessary, since these tables don't require precise formatting, and the layout probably won't ever change, either. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 18:03, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
(hoping I interpreted Poke correctly in that a row template would be acceptable). I've created Map link table and tested it on Chat link format/0x04 codes/Cities. Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:40, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
Er-r-r... yeah, thank you. I was just in the processes of writing regexp to make such operation. Its defined until you next redefine it. Just declare it before you start using it, like in my example, for instance in the table header. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 19:11, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Phew, finished. Alex is right, the main reason for splitting into 2+ tables is page length. Of course, we can have 1 big table, but other 80% of the page will be blank - I don't think it's reasonable, besides it is harder to read. MalGalad 20:27, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Second-person or third-person?

On this wiki, should we be talking to the player of a character/profession/etc. ("You can tame a pet"), or about the player/character/profession/etc. ("The ranger can tame a pet")? That is, should we write from the second-person or third-person perspective? —173.199.215.5 02:57, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Second-person is indisputably easier to write and read when discussing how a player does something (like you say, "You can tame a pet," or "Equip a weapon on your character."), there's no reason at all to complicate things by trying to write all of that in third-person. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 01:22, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Moving a page, template problems

After moving an event page, the Something or other link from the corresponding meta event displays not correctly. The event symbol is missing (although specified in the event template of the moved page), and the event level in brackets is displayed twice.

Example: last event of http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Assault_on_Thunder_Rock (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Kill_the_champion_Modniir_overlord)

In addition to that, the event reward box is empty.

Any reasons? Just caching issues? Senritsu (talk) 17:04, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Looks like SMW has doubled-up the page's properties for some reason: Special:Browse/Kill-20the-20champion-20Modniir-20overlord. I have no clue how that could happen, but I'll try to look into it. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 17:40, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
Deleting and restoring the page seems to fix it, see The Battle for Northeast Kessex Hills/Defeat Harathi loggers before they collect enough lumber to repair the Earthworks catapults. Removing the infobox and adding it back in forces it to update correctly luckily. This is going to be a constant issue for semantic templates for events and items.--Relyk ~ talk < 17:48, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Icon question

Please look at the items offered by renown heart npc Sergeant Yarbrough. Notice how on many of the items, there is no image. Follow the link through to the item, such as Seraph-Issue Coat, and it has the correct in-game icon provided. The image, though, is of Lionguard Coat (Lionguard Coat.png). This doesn't seem to follow through to Sergeant Yarbrough, where the inventory is looking for Seraph-Issue Coat.png, which doesn't exist.

Looking around, I can find more examples of this, such as here, here, and here. Of course we could link all items' icons just like is done on the items' pages, or we could upload the photos as the default items'. Those are the two solutions I can see and would be able to do myself (albeit one being easier and more thorough than the other), but I'm looking for specification. (I've already been wrong on one subject I took action on today) --Clevin (talk) 15:52, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

It happens because that pages has more then one infobox, they should be rewrote using Fm table. MalGalad 20:49, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
Or not... Well, they should be re-written anyway. I've tried to use it on Seraph-Issue Coat, but either I don't understand something, or Fm table doesn't work well with armour. MalGalad 21:02, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
Fixed, Template:Inventory/Armor was passing a default of {name}.png as the third argument to item icon, which overrides {item icon}'s standard filename determination. The other Inventory/* templates likely have the same bug, I'll go fix them. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 21:30, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
OK, then I have another question. Two, actually. There's no need to leave item stat lookup on the page, you can preview page with it and don't actually confirm edit, or?.. Secondly, fm table has Strength on armor page, although I've used chest as a type... MalGalad 22:26, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
I guess I should get around to implementing the lookup in armor/trinket infoboxes, eh? —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 22:31, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
Ghm, that was... unexpected, considering "item's type, e.g. sword, helm, amulet". Yes, please. Hm, looking at the weapon infobox template, I've kinda understood why I didn't see the lookup tl on the pages itself. MalGalad 22:45, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
The lookup template itself can handle any equipment type, if you call it directly like you did. It just wasn't hooked up inside the armor and trinket infoboxes, which is why you had to add it outside the infobox. I've updated the armor infobox now, will do trinket in a bit. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 00:11, 6 June 2013 (UTC)
Trinket infobox is updated. You can now use the FM table on all FM equipment, and the prefix parameter in all equipment infoboxes. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 01:30, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Editing "In-game description"

I noticed on the Starting equipment page that most of the profession-specific items listed are missing an appropriate in-game description and instead just say "0No — In-game description" instead of "No description available" or simply omitting the section entirely. I'd assume this is a template issue and that some if the items are just on a different template? Either way, I can't seem to directly edit this section and am hoping somebody could provide some more information. ninestories (talk) 18:22, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

The no you're seeing is generated from the uslot = no parameter in the template, for identifying the upgrade component. The starting equipment doesn't have an in-game description or upgrade slot iirc. Simply remove the parameter to fix it.-Relyk ~ talk < 18:32, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Missing Weapon Coefficients

Why are there not any information on the warrior weapon skills damage coefficients as well a a few other profession's?

Light source article (or lack of one)

I've been wondering if a light source article might be a welcome addition to the wiki. Basically, after a short description of what light source is, we could list every weapon which emits a light source in the dark. This could be pretty useful for non-torch users, haha.

So in the list, obviously, all torches would go in. Weapons with their own light source such as Jormag's Breath and Fiery Dragon Sword, while weapons which look like they might emit a light source (such as Infinite Light) can be debunked as false.

Of course, if a category serves as a better option, then that's okay too. IceBlink (talk) 17:37, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

As someone having looked explicitely for weapons that do glow, I think this would be a great addition. One minor note on the wording though: a light source emits light, not a light source ;) poke | talk 09:11, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Downloadable Copy of GW2 Wiki for offline use/ mobile use

Downloadable copy of the GW2 Official Wiki. Just wondering if there is one available. I know there are apps for mobile phones and offline browsers and such. Im currently deployed and when I have internet, I tend to save the bandwidth for gameplay and email. It would be nice to be able to read all the new content and changes via an offline copy of the wiki in mobile format if possible. Just wondering if this could be implimented in the future or does someone else have a current way they are doing this. Wildmanviper (talk) 16:25, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Hey, unfortunately we do not have an offline version available. While I understand your reasoning, I do not see this coming in the foreseeable future. The always-changing nature of a wiki simply does not really work well for storing a single revision of every article.
What you could do however would be to use your browser’s save functionality to save the pages for offline use; or you could print articles using a PDF printer to read them later. A third possibility would be to navigate to the pages when you have internet, and keep them in your cache. Browsers usually allow you to enable an offline mode that will serve all pages from its cache.
Lastly, I can assure you that there is not a too big bandwidth use when browing the wiki, so it might not be as bad as you expect it. poke | talk 17:16, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Character Quotes Hub/Article

Hello, GW2wiki :) I really hope I'm asking in the right place (if not: sorry! D: so sorry), as I was hoping to do something more constructive on here than just filing away my character plans/info. I see a project page for quotes, but this seems like a different beast. Since I adore the player-character chats ("I feel furious!" "Gaining adrenaline." "Oooh, shiny!"), I was hoping someone could either 1) point me in the direction of an article on them that I am completely missing with my search-fu or, 2) provide some feedback on ideas I had for creating such an article/hub. Now, a hub-style page would be the laziest option methinks? It would be a simple way to link to articles like Minion or Attunement that already contain character quote templates, or maybe even their specific Notes section (though if the quote info got moved/the section deleted, the links would be wrong). A hub like this wouldn't be incredibly useful for showing off actual information, though.

Title: Before I saw the Character Quotes Template, I was referring to the phenomenon as "character chat" despite the mechanic pages all describing them as a "shout", because I believe the current wording would be really confusing in light of the Shout skill type. "Character" is also what the wiki calls the player character, so I thought it was sort of appropriate (though a bit generic), and my tiny time playing in LPC MUD lib calls stuff like this item chats/room chats/whatever chats. "Dialogue" or "Quote" seems too expansive/generic for what I'd like to cover. So: What would this article/hub be called? Once decided, I'd like to transfer this language over to the mechanic pages and to replace the currently-used "shout" wording, and obviously use it as the hub/article title.

The Idea: While a simple hub with links to relevant pages could work, it would still leave all the information spread out across 30+ pages of the wiki. Collecting all the mechanic-chat tables in an article would require an extra layer of template to collect each specific mechanic's info, like a nav box type, so that information could be edited once on the template and then distributed in multiple places (namely: the character chat article and the relevant mechanic page). ...or else the quote box could be removed from the mechanic pages and the main character quotes article merely linked to within the mechanic's notes - an idea which I personally dislike haha (I like visuals), though I see why it might be suggested. Having all the quote boxes on one article might look repetitive, but it would also visually aid those who would like to fill out missing information. Also, the Runes page has a similar box-spam look, so it's not unprecedented.

Alternatively (additionally?), this page could break up the quotes by race, which would be a new way to look at the information/nice to see on the racial pages. Unfortunately, for this to coexist with the current Character Quote box being mechanic-based, I think (based on my limited understanding of wikicode) there'd have to be a ton of third layer templates housing mechanic quotes by mechanic+race+sex. This would give tremendous flexibility, in that quotes could be presented in BOTH race and mechanic tables without having to remember to edit the same info in two different places. In other words: First: generic, empty Mechanic/Race quote box, Second (what would ultimately be transcluded into main articles): Mechanic/Race-specific quote box, Third (what people would ultimately edit): the quote itself. By having, say, all the Female Norn Minion quotes in their own text-only template, you could transclude them easily into either the mechanic-based quote box or a race-based box. Maybe you could do that third template layer as a full racial row in a table with the male+female, as I'm not sure why you'd want a gender-based quote box (there are no pages on gender like there are race), and then you could insert the rows where necessary. While this would cut down on number of templates, it would also remove the possibility of inserting just the text (I'm probably the only fool who'd want to transclude a character chat onto one of my personal pages) and might cause a problem with row styling. I also think the Attunement mechanic might mess the row transclusion idea up, though, as there are more+different variables than just male+female, causing this kind of chat to not sit well in a race-based box that otherwise has only two columns (vs the 4 of attunement).

Conclusion: Some might consider this overkill, but this is the kind of data organization/flow I love, so I had to throw all possibilities out there XD I'd also like to apologize if this subject is Old Hat and Decisions Have Been Made previously about the character chats. I just wanted to see where I could dive in to adding the quotes myself and found that I'd have to look at data spread over 30 pages. That's really the root of this ramble, and what I hope to solve at minimum. I won't really have time to implement much until after San Diego Comic Con, so hopefully the feedback I get from discussion in the meantime will provide me with a clearer battle plan. I hope this has made at least a little sense. Thanks for your time, patience and (hopefully!) input :) -Kymtastic (talk) 22:28, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Hey, just wanted to leave a quick reply because apparently no one else wants to. Character quotes is something we didn’t really do for quite a long time. It originally started on a user page and then was carried over to relevant articles using the new character quote template. So far there wasn’t really much discussion about it, so we haven’t made any decisions yet on how to document it.
If you want, you can just start adding character quotes to more articles or even start out some general article with a reference or something. You can also start a project to invite other interested users to join the discussion and help you in your quest dynamic event.
That being said, I think “character quotes” is a good name for this, because as you said the wiki usually refers to player characters as “character”. ”Shouts” is somewhat incorrect given that most of those quotes are not shouted at all. If you can come up with a better name though, that’s totally fine too. poke | talk 08:38, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
I suggested "quips", but the other people in that discussion were already committed to their own ideas. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 12:32, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
Hi Kymtastic, thanks for your tweet and for proposing this. I discussed this topic with some of our writing team (Writer John Ryan and Lead Writer Bobby Stein) and their clarification about our internal terminology will probably help the wiki a lot so here it is:
We categorize VO in different buckets based on who says a line and under what context:
  • "I feel six feet tall!" is considered Player Chatter since it’s exclusive to PCs and fires off when certain game conditions are met. Other examples are when the player is suffering from a condition, is low on health, discovers a new POI, etc.
  • When two or more NPCs engage in conversation in the world, we call them scenes (ambient, event, etc.).
  • When an NPC fires off a single line in combat, it’s called combat chatter.
  • When an NPC acknowledges you on interact, those are its greets.
  • Lines contained within a cinematic are referred to internally as cinematic lines.

Upload file information

As per this, the following text strikes me as a little odd:

"Note on updating existing images: DO NOT re-upload or revert your new version if it doesn't display immediately. This happens because the old version is cached in your browser and on the wiki server. To resolve this, purge the wiki's cache by clicking the "refresh" tab at the top of the page, then force-refresh your browser's cache by typing Ctrl+R or Ctrl+F5."

Shouldn't it be "pressing"? I know it's negligent and a bit of a nitpick, but it could be confusing to some people who are not so technologically savvy, who may think it means "type it into your URL address bar". -- My Talk Lacky 14:51, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

NPC quotes without interaction

Hi everyone,

in the NPC template there is a "Quotes" section, where you write what the NPC says (into a balloon) when interacted with. On some occasions (dynamic events, random dialogues...) some NPC may talk this way, without interaction (see idle banter of Graff for an example of random quotes). Is there a specific section of the template to put such quotes when related to dynamic events?

To give an example of what I'm asking, I think especially to Farmer Haywood that says "The caravan from Divinity's Reach is mighty late. I wonder what's keeping them." when the event Help escort the weapons shipment to Nebo Terrace is active, and I don't know where to put in in the article.

92.157.250.126 19:36, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Many NPCs have scripted lines that they'll say without being interacted with once certain parameters are met (being revived, engaging in combat, specific parts of an event, etc).
  • Lets say the dialogue appears as a speech bubble and shows up in your chat window as (for example) "Farmer Haywood: The caravan from Divinity's Reach is mighty late. I wonder what's keeping them." when (as an example) the event first starts. In that case you'd format it like..
Quotes
During Help escort the weapons shipment to Nebo Terrace
;Event starts
:Farmer Haywood: "The caravan from Divinity's Reach is mighty late. I wonder what's keeping them."
For an example you can look at Veteran Risen Wizard.
  • If the dialogue only appears as a speech bubble like (for example) "Greetings" and doesn't show in the chat log then I'm not entirely sure how it should be formatted to be honest. Personally, I think this would work though...
Quotes
*"Greetings."

How to start a new category

I am thinking bout starting a new category, with a listing. But not a clue how to do this. In this case I want to make a category called 'common merchants'. One of the complaints I hear often from myself and others is that all merchants have the same icon, while often you want the one that sells bags, salvage kits and gathering tools (hence the term common merchants to mark the difference with merchants that sells something specific). Ranique (talk) 10:23, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

To create a category, just categorize pages into it. That will make the category appear, but you might want to actually create the category article itself too (so it isn’t a redlink, or to make it a subcategory of something else); to do that, just handle it like any other article. poke | talk 17:58, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

Would it be possible to create a template that can play audio files? I'm thinking of something similar to what the League of Legends Wiki uses, the template can be found here. -Somohexual (talk) 14:14, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

Audio files are just treated like images, and can be uploaded using Special:Upload. They are placed within the File namespace, and can be accessed/used using ; just like images.
The supported types that are listed on the upload form do not suggest that we have support for audio files currently though. If you have a good use case for them, you might want to bring it up on Guild Wars 2 Wiki talk:Requests for technical administration. poke | talk 02:02, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

The AoE damage radius was supposedly increased on june 25th. Why hasn't the wiki changed to reflect it? If no one knows, why hasn't it been noted?

AoE damage radius was not increased. "Increased the size of the area that each meteor strikes". Armor Magician

Oh wow some one was kind enough to add magician armor for all species TY so much. now if I can find some one selling shoulder and head gear =)

I have some loot of magician armor I am missing 2 pieces I have no clue about how to add pictures or anything to wiki. Heck it took me 10 mins to find this page. If some one would like me to send the picture of my Mesmer toon. I will be happy for some one to post the loot armor on wiki. I am missing gloves and head gear. 70.161.103.15 16:32, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to do/ask. Are you trying to contribute to the wiki and upload the pictures of your armour to the Magician armor page, or are you trying to find out where to obtain the gloves and head gear part of the armour? If you are trying to contribute, than generally it's better if you have the full set before screenshotting and uploading using the Special:Upload tool. If you are just trying to find out how to obtain the armour, than you obtain it as loot from monsters in low to mid level zones. -- My Talk Lacky 02:04, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

I wanted to upload images of the armor but will wait until I have the other 2 pieces. I really dont understand how to contribute to wiki let alone how to upload images. I am very slow in computer stuff. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.161.103.15 (talkcontribs) at 12:41, 10 October 2013‎ (UTC).

Hey! Thanks for offering your help by uploading armor images. You can upload images by using Special:Upload or by clicking on a red link on an article where an image should be (for example, most armor pages have galleries where images would be placed). Doing the latter has the benefit, that you don’t need to enter the target file name and the images are just picked up automatically in the galleries, so I would suggest you to always do that.
Unfortunately, to be able to upload files, we require users to be registered—this is simply a safety measure. To register an account click here. Afterwards, you can log in and then upload your images.
Regarding contributing in general, I guess you already learned now how to edit pages and add comments to a discussion. That’s already a big part of how the wiki works. If you want to change articles now, you can just edit them to improve them. And if you have further questions, don’t hesitate to ask here for help! Happy editing! :) poke | talk 11:21, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Pull API data into GW2W?

The wiki seems at least minimally capable of pulling some API event data (example: the "Worlds Active on" field from event infoboxes like this one), but I can't figure out how to wikicode it outside of the infobox. I know there are loads of third-party sites and apps available, but why go external for that information when the wiki can apparently already pull the kind of data I want? Isn't this where we're supposed to come for game info?

I looked at the event infobox code on its edit page but couldn't decipher it, tried looking through the available templates and had no luck, then I dug through the API forums and didn't find anything useful either. There doesn't even seem to be a readily-accessible list of ID codes used by the API so I don't know what code I'd be using for any given event. What I want to do is put a simple, homeworld-specific STDT table with columns for Event | Location | State | Timer in my user space. For an obvious example, here's a quick-reference dragon events table:

Event Location State (Kaineng) Timer (Kaineng)
Event boss (tango icon).png
[Group Event] Slay the Shatterer (50)
Lowland Burns inactive-active time to start
Red Boss.png
[Group Event] Defeat Tequatl the Sunless (65)
Splintered Coast success-fail time to start
Event boss (tango icon).png
[Group Event] Defeat the Claw of Jormag (80)
Frostwalk Tundra warmup-preparation time to start

The Event and Location columns are just basic wikicode, but I don't see any way to plug in the State and Timer data. I realize that some fancy live-countdown script isn't happening with wikicode, but something static that simply returns the current countdown time on page load/refresh should be possible. If not that's disappointing but not essential. However, at minimum I want to pull the world-specific event State on page load and display the result inside the STDT, since it seems clear that event infoboxes can already do this to some degree. I'm sure I'd have to create a user template and then pull the data into the STDT from that, but I just can't see how to make such a template. -- Teknomancer (talk) 09:02, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately it’s all not that easy. First of all, timers are complicated. The API itself does not provide any timer; when an event starts or something else. Sites like gw2stuff do this by looking at when the event last run and by estimating when it should run again based on a spawn time. If they are doing it even better they look at how long each phase of the event took to estimate this even better. In the end, to do this here, we would need to store the previous event times somewhere. We can’t do that, so timers are not possible.
Next, we don’t have any server-side support for API requests (yet). Everything we have that comes from the API involves additional client-side requests to the API every time the page is loaded. This is the reason why our event state sits behind a “fetch” link btw., so we don’t unnecessarily query the API on every load. Furthermore there is no way to directly do that from wiki code, especially not some static solution that just works on page load. What we have done for the event state is written a widget we can use to create such a fetch link. Filtering for single servers, or fetching multiple events at a time is currently not possible. That’s why Scarlet's Invasions/tracking looks and works the way it does.
So no, what you want to do is not really possible like that; at least not right now. Right now, you could do something similar like the invastion tracking page, but each event still would require an additional “fetch” click. So you might be better of to some other site to manage this. poke | talk 10:18, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
OK I kind of figured the level of detail I was going for wasn't going to be easy (didn't realize the time wasn't part of it either), but it never hurts to ask. TBH I started looking at all those other resources and got greedy. :P It doesn't need to be server-specific, so using the fetch link exactly as it currently exists in the event infoboxes would be just fine since copy-pasting that code was the basic idea in the first place. That at least tells you whether or not the event is live, and if so where. Is there a way to plug just the event fetch into the basic STDT above, without all the other infobox code? My current workaround is a bit...inelegant. -- Teknomancer (talk) 11:07, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Just to be clear, the format for Scarlet's_Minions_Invade!/tracking is fine, so I guess what I'm after now is the list of event ID's? -- Teknomancer (talk) 11:47, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
You can get the event id from the source of an event article. In the event infobox transclusion there is a parameter “event id”. poke | talk 11:59, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
OK one more question on this and then I'll give it a rest. I've added some of these that I want to watch, mainly for meta events and such that have certain types of mob spawns (for the Slayer achievements). They work fine on their own event pages, and the event codes were just copy-pasted so those are identical, but for whatever reason they won't actually pull the data from my page. Is there something else I need to add in for non-dragon events to function? If you take a look, you'll see that the dragon events work as expected, but clicking on the fetch links for the others doesn't do anything at all. What have I missed, because I'm not seeing it...? -- Teknomancer (talk) 13:26, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
The eventId isn't the first param, it needs to explicitly be prefix'd with "eventId=" --JonTheMon (talk) 14:04, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
Derp, I went and fixed it without noticing Jon's comment here. Yep, gotta name your parameters. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 14:17, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
(facepalm) I can't believe I didn't see that. Oh well, working now. Thanks! Teknomancer (talk) 07:34, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

The Flameseeker Prophecies footprint effects

Excuse me,when can The Flameseeker Prophecies have its own footprient, please. i really like that

Can you see that enormous notice at the top of the page? You just asked a game question, or rather a hopeful suggestion phrased as a question, which would be much better placed on the forums where it might get noticed, and if enough people support your suggestion then ArenaNet might implement it!
Us editors are just regular plebs like yourself and have no input over what goes into the game in the future - but good effort for creating an account anyway... -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 23:48, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

This page is for wiki questions. This is a game question, not a wiki question. 69.177.225.236 17:54, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

icons for app

Can I use some of the icon and pictures here in the wiki for my app? Possibly just a few like dungeon icon and other event icons

There's an API endpoint for those: API:1/files. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 13:30, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Yes I've seen this but it does not have the icons I needed like the world event icon which is available here in the wiki. So can I get those images here and look for permission? Thanks. Also I just noticed other websites got those official icons for skills, traits etc. and wondered if they got it all here.
Oh, I missed the bit about event icons. Our icons are ripped from Gw2.dat - we can't give you permission to use them because we don't own them, ArenaNet does. However, Anet is very nice about letting fans use game assets in their websites/apps, as long as you don't make money off of it or imply that they're original work. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 14:16, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

flame armor (light)

Can anyone explain why there is no light armor for sale in the trading post for the flame armor that has been out about 2 weeks now have seen players with it on but its not listed in the gem store have checked with friends that also play and they say its not there either . any help would be appreciated. thanks for your time 67.142.175.20 20:25, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

I believe you're talking about Flamekissed Light Armor Skin and if that's the case, it was removed from the gem store when players complained that it looked nearly identical to Tier 3 Light Human Cultural Armor, and they believed that that armor skin should remain exclusive to humans, as is the case with all other cultural armor. Anet agreed, and removed it from the gem store until such time that they rework it to give it a unique appearance. Once the updated look is released, it will be back on the gem store and all players who bought the old set will have their replaced with the new set. If they don't like the new set, they can get a refund. Psycho Robot (talk) 20:31, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Map Completion Table

I notice the Grove is not on this table, is the Grove not included in the World Completion achievement?

That is an oversight if its true. Where is the table you're referring to? Psycho Robot (talk) 23:26, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
too many zones meant that the grove was pushed down further than entry 1500.. and it was filtering for cities, which means it ignores 99% of the values found. fixed. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 09:38, 21 December 2013 (UTC)
