belated welcome[edit]

Here's a very belated welcome, lol, and thanks for your contributions!-- Shew 12:09, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Welcome to the GW2W Chriskang!!!! Sorry haven't gotten to welcome anyone yet. Eive Talk Windgrace 22:58, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks guys. Did you noticed that I registered to this wiki long before both of you? I should be the one to welcome you ;) Chriskang 11:51, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

Swordmastery[edit]

The thing is,... Open up that interview pl0x. First they talk about 'Swordsmanship', and then continue 'to get Sword Mastery[...]', so it really seems to me as if they're the same thing, but,... Well, the interviewer made a mistake D: --Naoroji User Naoroji Golem - Green.jpg 21:55, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

So you say that 2 mistakes were made: a first one in the official trait page (where Swordmastery was said to increase damage) and another one in the PCGamer interview? Why assume that when there's a simple explanation that makes all statements corrects: they're just 2 different traits. Chriskang 22:08, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
First of all, you're putting words into Naoroji's mouth, please do not do that. :) Secondly, has it been said anywhere that a trait can only have 1 function? Thirdly, I too found it odd that they would have 2 traits with EXTREMELY similar names, as well as the fact that the interviewer reverted back from one name to the other. Now, you may be right, they may be 2 different traits. However, I personally find it rather unlikely (though not impossible). Seeing as how there is still the possibility that Swordsmanship is another trait, we might as well leave that page until we learn otherwise. :) --AmannelleUser Amannelle Me.jpg 23:12, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm not saying that my hypothesis is 100% sure either. Just that, for now, I see no reason to claim for a mistake when an acceptable explanation exists. Btw, welcome to my talk page Naoroji and Amannelle ;) Chriskang 23:26, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I totally know what you mean. So long as it's a possibility, it should remain until proven otherwise. I personally doubted they would name 2 traits very similarly, but I suppose with over 100 traits per profession, you're going to get at LEAST 2 that sound similar. xDDD --AmannelleUser Amannelle Me.jpg 23:32, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
Let's speculate. Swordmastery is a trait. So, we can assume that Hammermastery, Macemastery and Axemastery will be too. Now, we also had confirmation of a Weapon Master trait. Compared to those 5, do you really find Swordsmanship to be that close? Chriskang 07:22, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
I actually do, since Swordsmanship and Swordmastery simply have the same meaning (as a word) :O. Also, I didn't know about it being mentioned on the official Traits-page, so, all I assumed was indeed that the PCGamer interviewer made a mistake :). Also, it's happened before that ANet themselves made a mistake,... Shouts are a perfect example. On the GW2 official site, they used to say 'Shouts are spells',... They only recently changed that, too D: (Thanks for the welcome btw.) --Naoroji User Naoroji Golem - Green.jpg 09:03, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
I've approached PCGamer's interviewer (named Tom Francis) directly on this matter. I assume we'll receive an answer, soon. --Naoroji User Naoroji Golem - Green.jpg 09:14, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Nice move. Chriskang 10:46, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
The reason it seems to similar to ME is because they have VERY similar spelling (except for the added s in swordsmanship) but at the end you also have the same number of letters (-nship and -stery)... Aaand they also have a very similar meaning... but like I said, with SO many traits, it'd be hard not to have a few with similar meanings or names. I guess if the guy replies to Naoroji we'll know. xD --AmannelleUser Amannelle Me.jpg 11:38, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
"Tom Francis: Hey Naoroji. Those are both direct quotes from Eric, so unless he's mistaken, they're two separate traits. I'd have to check the full transcript, but I don't think he told me what Sword Mastery does - I assumed it was a general boost to your effectiveness with swords. It wasn't my intention to imply they were the same."
Take from that what you will xD. Doesn't really clear up much, but yeah. --Naoroji User Naoroji Golem - Green.jpg 15:50, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your help Naoroji. Even if we're still unsure, I think the safest bet for now is to keep them separated, right? Chriskang 16:05, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
Yep, seperate :). My apologies, lol. --Naoroji User Naoroji Golem - Green.jpg 16:06, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Sniper Image[edit]

What do you mean its not GW2 concept art...where did it come from? Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 00:20, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

It's a painting offered by Horia Dociu for the Beautiful Grim auction, probably personal work unrelated to GW2. Here's the (probable) source for the image. As you can see, the image is not tagged with "ArenaNet" and "Guild Wars" like the other images submitted by Horia to cghub ([1], [2], [3], [4]). Moreover, the sniper doesn't appear on Horia's webite like the other GW2 concept arts (open the first images from the "Work" section and check their labels). Chriskang 01:08, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
Also, read carefully the 3rd question here: "in addition to the original GW2 concept art, the Beautiful Grim auction will also feature personal work from Aaron Coberly, Daniel Dociu, Horia Dociu, ...". Chriskang 01:10, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Trait page[edit]

To avoid a revert war: "Elementalist: Wrong wikification. Should link to "Xxx Mastery (trait line)" to be consistent with Arcanum." The Arcanum and Xxx Mastery links were (and are) consistent with each other? I'm a bit confused, so please help me understand what you mean. ;/ --SirrushUser Sirrush sig.jpg 09:52, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

For some reason, I misread Earth Mastery with Earth attunement. Thanks for making me double-check. Chriskang 11:15, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

icons[edit]

Hey, you seem to know your way around page sources (given that you found the elementalist's weapons list). I looked in the page source for this page, but I couldn't find the icons used for the races list at the top right of the page. Would you mind seeing if you can find them?-- Shew 19:08, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Here you are Asura icon.jpg Human icon.jpg Sylvari icon.jpg Norn icon.jpg Charr icon.jpg. Chriskang 21:41, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! I didn't realize that the text was part of the image as well. Ty for cropping them.-- Shew 21:45, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

NPC infobox[edit]

I drew up an NPC infobox in the same vein as your skill infobox. User:Ezekial Riddle/sandbox. I didn't stress over padding too much. If you want to, you may fiddle with it. :) --Riddle 06:40, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Interesting. We'll bump the discussions about infoboxes as soon as the final layout for the main page is decided. Chriskang 09:28, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
And you believe that discussion is ever going to come to an end? Pfah! Delusional :P. --Naoroji User Naoroji Golem - Green.jpg 09:29, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
I take great care in not participating in it, hoping that it'll make it end sooner. Unfortunately, it doesn't work :) Chriskang 09:35, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Tango icons[edit]

How do we know that's the actual Elementalist icon we will see in GW2? We don't, rite? D: --Naoroji User Naoroji Golem - Green.jpg 12:03, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

If I'm not mistaken, tango icons from GWW were created by players because there was no official "elementalist icon" in-game. Those uploaded here are the ones from GWW and I don't know if they'll ever be reused here. I don't think it was even discussed actually. Chriskang 13:20, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, I uploaded all of them into my userspace because 'twas said 'GW1=/=GW2',... Mehh, I don't know. --Naoroji User Naoroji Golem - Green.jpg 13:23, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
I guess if there are official icons in-game, we'll have to use these over anything else. And, as this question can't be answered before at least a month, we're stuck for now. Wait & see. Chriskang 13:29, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
All tango profession icons were made by gw1:User:LordBiro based on the Guild Wars in-game icons. He also made lots of other widely used icons, as you can see on his userpage. pling User Pling sig.png 15:39, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification, Pling. Chriskang 18:03, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

delete[edit]

I am curious, but who told you that {{delete|(enter msg here)}} Needed to be in a <noinclude></noinclude> Tag? Usually for anything needing deletion, we place it at the top alone and by it's self so it'd work, not in a noinclude tag. So, I am still curious as to your intentions on that. :-) Ariyen 17:18, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

For templates <noinclude> tags are useful so that pages that have the template on them are not marked for deletion as well. --User Phnzdvn sig.pnghnzdvn 17:38, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Chris was in the right and Phnzdvn corrected it and his explanation should be more than enough, so no need for me to repeat what he said or did. From an admin standpoint though, it's a complete mess when 20 pages get marked for deletion when just one is truly marked. — Gares 18:14, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Usually for any template to be deleted, the one to do the deletion would check to see if any pages are being used by that template. Hence, usually one would check the page, template, etc. before deletion. So, not necessary for the delete tag to be in no include. (it doesn't work anyway.. tried no include on a page that was used as a template in userspace, hence how I know... It'd still include it...) Ariyen 19:46, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
That's actually more than overkill to delete a single page. Deleting is the simplest job we do. Know the policy, check date (if non-speedy), what links here (fix accordingly), delete. You also have to realize that if a delete tag is not placed properly and you receive the "error", you have to narrow down your search by going through the deletion candidates and find exactly which page the deletion tag was placed. It's a hassle that can be avoided very simply. — Gares 20:05, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
That is true. Anyway, for that particular page, nothing links to it. Usually when assigning deletion to a photo or page, etc. you check the what links here before deciding if it needs <noinclude> or not with the {{delete}} tag. Ariyen 20:10, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
I posted on your page (almost a response to this). Chris was correct. No need to spam his talk page any longer regarding this. — Gares 20:18, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Thought I'd ask[edit]

Since I posted it on Aqua's talk thinking it was yours; (facepalm). How are you able to extract the flash files from GW2 website? I have tried the firefox way, but it doesn't seem to work. Thanks :) --Naut User Naut Dark Blue Monk.png 18:04, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

You just have to download the professions.swf file and open it with a soft that is able to read it. I use SWIX and Sothink most of the time because they're free but all Adobe products (like Flash) should be able to do it too (because the SWF format was created by Adobe). Chriskang 18:15, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Ahh, okay. Well I extracted the "Object" with firefox and tried too load it in flash, however it stopped at the loading bar :/, Thanks for replying :) --Naut User Naut Dark Blue Monk.png 18:18, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
You might have downloaded professions-loader.swf. This one contains just the progress bar. Try professions.swf instead. Chriskang 18:22, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
That's odd, it isn't there. "professions_bg.jpg" is there, but the loader is the only swf in the list. --Naut User Naut Dark Blue Monk.png 18:24, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Look at the source code of this page and search for swf. It's in line 36. If you can't find it, here's a direct download link. (The page needs an XML as parameter to be displayed correctly, so it's normal to see a white page with the direct link. Just wait for the load to finish and use "save as" in your browser). Chriskang 18:29, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

"I hate IE"[edit]

Then don't use it! :P --Naoroji User Naoroji Golem - Green.jpg 08:28, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

If maybe you could fix the New Krytan W? Arrowmaster has uploaded one, but it is neither transparent nor of very good quality. Thanks in advance. -- Kings & Queens | T | C | 12:17, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

Professions reveal pic[edit]

I noticed that you managed to obtain the "Elementalist-Warrior-Ranger" picture in which they are all highlighted, may I inquire as to how you did that? (And/or you could do it before Thursday)... Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 03:09, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

It was extracted from the CSS soon after the ranger reveal but, for some reasons, the same image from after the necro reveal was not highlighted (source is here, check it before thursday). I'll try to see what I can do with photoshop. Chriskang 00:10, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
So that is why I couldn't get it to work. Thanks for clearing it up, Chris! - Infinite - talk 11:51, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks![edit]

^ (For the template help.) Any idea on why html won't work within file names?-- Shew 04:44, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Just because the images are called:
File:New Krytan alphabet X.png
and not
File:New Krytan alphabet <font style="text-transform:capitalize;">x</font>.png
You might be able to get the capitalization with the magic word uc though. Try this :
[[File:New Krytan alphabet {{ uc: {{{1}}} }}.png]]
Chriskang 04:50, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Worked. Thanks! I guess it wouldn't be too much to ask the user to capitalize every character since I'd be having them enter each character separately anyways.-- Shew 14:56, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Icons[edit]

Where was it brought up that we were switching from PNGs to JPGs for icons? Aqua (T|C) 17:21, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Unless the image contains transparency, there's no good reason to use png over jpg. The file size will just be bigger with no gain in quality. We might switch back to png later, if we ever discover semi-transparent files in the "gw.dat" of the game but for now jpg is the way to go. If you're looking for a small discussion on this subject, there was one here. In the case of the wooden focus, I tagged it for deletion because I replaced it by a much better quality [[:File:Wooden_Focus.jpg|image]]. This images comes from the big collage of icons that was published on ArenaNet's flickr a while back, with a jpg format. For the other images that I tagged today, the reason is mainly consistency because they are skill icons and all other skill icons here are jpg (just like on the GWW). Chriskang 17:54, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
I agree, but I won't be the one rectifying ALL other icons. I'm not trying to sound like I'm avoiding work, but there's quite a bit of icons out there saved as PNG.... :( - Infinite - talk 21:14, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
There's no need to re-upload everything IMO. Just let every contributor upload images with any extension until the game is released. If we're able to extract the images from the game files, they'll probably be png anyway. The only issue that I see with different image formats would be with a template expecting a certain extension. But it doesn't seem to be the case (the current {{weapon infobox}} template requires a full filename so any format works). Chriskang 21:34, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Except it *would* be better if all icons were .JPG and standardized it for the future so I might make a project out of it now they're still manageable. - Infinite - talk 21:43, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
I agree for skill icons as they'll probably be jpg in the game files but the chance is very high that items inventory icons will contain transparency (just like in gw1) so jpg won't work and we'll have to use png (again, like the GWW). For now, we have no choice but wait for the release of the game (and extracting images from the files) before we can standardize anything. Chriskang 21:52, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
In the demo so far (I know, not conclusive), every icon is flat and non-transparent. It's to add to the art style of the game. We can be fairly sure icons will never contain transparency. - Infinite - talk 22:00, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Well, fine. >.> - Infinite - talk 22:22, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
I have to disagree with the "no transparency in demo". Look at this screenshot taken when a guy was dragging the agility trait. You can clearly see that the icon is not a square. But even if it's not a square, you can see the background color (orange) just outside of the hexagonal border. This means that, outside of the border, there is transparency. Chriskang 22:26, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

if I used my account? ;) Now Chriskang, I am only here for a short while and I would have liked it if you had at least told someone you were only uploading bits and pieces. I would've loved to help you, but I thought you already wanted the role you had. I've uploaded the remaining concept art, but I am still unsure whether or not to upload the renders. I am saddened to see you behave in such a way... but I will hold to the idea that perhaps you were just rude due to tiredness. As I said before, I am only here for a very short amount of time while I am on break, so if you need some assistance with anything, please do feel free to ask. :) Whatever helps the "community-driven project". ;) --AmannelleUser Amannelle Me.jpg 13:37, 9 March 2011 (UTC)

Just a thought, but could a custom-made image work better? There (shouldn't) be more than 10 in total (+4 for the attunements). ShadowRunner 20:47, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
If you go that route, we could use the ingame attunement images that are used to toggle between atunements. --Moto Saxon 20:51, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

Condition icons[edit]

Hey, I'm new to the inner workings of a wiki. I made some large-resolution icons for the conditions (see them at http://mesmer.me/2011/10/22/the-ten-conditions-of-guild-wars-2/) and was wondering if they could serve to replace the ones the wiki currently uses (at http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Category:Effect_icons). Note that some are an interpretation based on low-res (crippled, immobilized, vulnerability) and some employ artistic license (bleeding), but most of them are very accurate. I'll be doing more icons for future articles, let me know if you think we can use them here. Shaun|Nox 00:49, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

Those are some amazing tangos. I say we implement those at least until we can pull the direct icons out of the GW2 .dat file. - Infinite - talk 00:56, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
Nice work ShaunNox, I support these icons too. Chriskang 22:41, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
