Link to IRC

I was just wondering about putting the IRC channel somewhere, perhaps under the News section. Not the Official News section, but the Wiki News section. That being said, the current 6-blocked main page proposal would have it better suited under Wiki Community. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 05:31, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

How about a link to the official forum as well? forum-en.gw2archive.eu 108.45.121.27 11:18, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

User Interface

Do you think we should add the User Interface (UI) to the Game mechanics section? Wobolo 20:48, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

speaking of interface... its probably to late since it beta soon to suggest and i'm not sure where it would be to put it... maybe some things in GW should work differently in GW2 the click to move i guess is gone, but i think maybe it would be nice if say you remove the trade button in your interface ppl couldn't walk up hit their trade button and make your trade box show up... or like unclicking all chat to not see it is nice... but why can you still type in all chat and everyone sees it but you don't (kinda sounds like an unwise combo in certain situations) really please move this to the suggestion page it belongs on maybe its how gw2 does work but maybe not could be a good idea for "online saftey"71.168.101.227 09:46, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

I like the look of your monobook skin quite a bit, however, I feel it just looks a little off when viewing on the vector skin. Maybe if the side menu had a bit more spacing to it? You should really take a look at this however as when you make your eventual upgrade to MediaWiki 1.18 or 1.19 you will probably want to make Vector your default for everyone. Good job though and I look forward to contributing!--Cyns 18:35, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

(Reset indent) While I agree with Aqua on what the featured articles should be, I also agree that Movement of the World is a good placeholder for now. I don't know of any page that is close to being up to the standards of a featured article. While it is a copy-pasta it does give a good insight of the lore leading up to the beginning of GW2, which wouldn't be a bad thing to feature leading up to GW2 release until we have something else that meets whatever standards are set up. I do agree that once we get good articles going we shouldn't make a copy-pasta article the feature ever again. And Zesbeer, it was pushed live with the assumption that overall it was good but still needed discussion on minor tweaking. Why are you even fighting this when you were constantly the one rushing to get something done? User Mattsta Sig1.jpgUser Mattsta Sig2.jpg 22:15, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

its funny how miss understood i was about that hole thing i was fighting to get one design not for it to be pushed live there is a huge difference there. This looks great, guys! One thing though... I kinda miss the GW2 logo with the profs bannered across the top... But with this new design, I don't think there's anywhere to put it. And besides, I think the front page looks much more organized and professional now. So... never mind I guess. Oh, and hi! I'm new here, but I've been a GW2 fan for a while xD (EDIT) sorry, I don't know how to add my name and the time at the end!--The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Thegingerdude (talk).

On pushing live

This is a bit tangental and specifically to address Zesbeer's question of why this version was pushed live within 24 hours of proposal, vs the months of discussion of various other proposals. The main reason is that it's the first version since the previous Main Page that a significant group of people have asked to be pushed live (rather than just proposing for discussion and improvement) that hasn't had something seriously wrong with it. The version asked to be pushed live back in... What, January? Was broken at various resolutions. So that wasn't gonna happen. Since then, I have not been made aware of a version with widespread support to be pushed live until this one. I looked at it, it didn't seem to be broken, looked at the discussion on it, it was proposed as an interim improvement and had a bunch of agreement for that, and a post or 2 discussing improvements that could continue to be hammered out. With both this and previous apparent consensus that the Main Page has been in need of change for some time now, I pushed it live. It was not my intention in pushing it, and I am reasonably confident it was not Infinite's intention in proposing it for pushing, to cut short the discussion process; if anything, I expect people who have otherwise been unaware of editcopy discussions (however that could happen) to be galvanized by the sudden change and join with whatever their protests and/or praise. Which they already are. So hope that clears it up, and please, by all means, return to your regularly-scheduled editcopy discussions. - Tanetris 13:47, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Currency

Currency under gear and inventory might need an edit to the 5 currencies known. 81.165.166.2 12:24, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

I agree. The currency section of the main page only lists 2 of the 5 currencies, coin and karma. Glory is listed under PvP, but there is no where on the Main Page that lists Gems or Influence. These two should be added, and maybe glory moved under currency? ~Ao Allusir 14:37, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

'Allo--the Main Page is back in talks to be revamped, and the current copy has changed Currency to Trading. Coin, karma, glory, influence, and gems are all present, and their positions can certainly be recommended to be changed again; the greater discussion has sort of pre-empted much of the fine-tuning for now. digital vs physical copies

I know there are 3 versions of the digital copies, but what about the physical version? I can find info on the collectors edition and on the non-collectors edition. Is there a 3rd version? 2nd question: The physical copy (non-collectors edition) is that the same as digital edition or the digital deluxe edition? Mainly I want to know about the extras that you get with the digital deluxe edition (things like Summon Mistfire Wolf Elite Skill, Rytlock Miniature, Golem Banker, Chalice of Glory, Tome of Influence). do I get those with the non-collectors edition (physical copy) of the game? Varuuth 14:00, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

There are 2 digital versions, the standard one and the digital deluxe. Beside those there are also 2 physical versions, the standard and the collectors edition. You can see the digital deluxe edition as the digital collectors edition, only without the physical extra's. You can find the extra's for each edition on the official purchase site: [1]. -- Cyan User Cyan Light sig.jpg 14:30, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
To help clarify your 2nd question. The Standard Physical Edition is exactly the same as the Digital Edition both in price and the extras you get. This came in over twitter last night, "For those of you asking, yes you will be able to upgrade from standard to Digital Deluxe, it will be linked within your account! ^AT". And just found out it is in the faq "Can I upgrade from a physical Standard Edition copy to Digital Deluxe? Yes, we will provide an upgrade path if you have Standard Edition and wish to upgrade to Digital Deluxe. We will release more information on this in the future." So if you want to pre-purchase the standard physical edition, you will most likely be able to pay the $20 extra (Standard is $60 and Digital Deluxe is $80) later on to upgrade and get the additional in-game extras. Combat

I think the dodge page should be added as a sub-section of combat here on the main page as it is unarguably a combat mechanic. LeonardMcCoy 08:09, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

It's a mechanic, but the three points currently listed are role archetypes. Unless you can make a meaningful difference in a fight by rolling around on the ground the whole time, it doesn't belong. Felix Omni Signature.png 08:14, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Recent updates vs news

I would like to propose adding a section that makes more prominent recent certain types of "changes" to GW2. The News section is specifically for tracking three (and only three) recent official (or near-official) posts, but there are other bits of critical information that are lost in the clutter. For example these changes will soon be lost, but they are still useful to people who don't have RSS feeds and might only visit 1-2x/fortnight:

  • The reason there's no BWE scheduled...yet (popularity of pre-purchase → overloaded home worlds → ANet must complete deployment of new hardware).
  • The new formalized process for reserving names.

We could also include in this section important links: social presence (GW2@Facebook/Twitter are important sources of news, the BWE FAQ for people having trouble getting started, and the BWE Forum (with a note about it being closed outside of events).

Or, instead of using the main page's limited real estate, we could add a note at the bottom of {{news}} or an infobox at the top of News. The point is to give more weight to certain types of recent updates because they have a practical importance (e.g. reserving names) or otherwise might get lost (e.g. link to Facebook/Twitter). – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 02:39, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

I agree that something needs to be done. News articles that have direct gameplay implications like name reservations should have higher "importance" so that people can easily see it longer. I'd personally rather see something on the main page since the news page has like 1/12th of the view counts as the main page. --Lania User Lania Elderfire pinkribbon.jpg05:51, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

I don't know if anyone else is having this happen, but the news tab is reverted clean back to the eighth, anyone else having this.76.115.167.227 00:56, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

No, last I saw, it was changed to "BWE2 is now over." Also, by that logic, news from the eighth is less news than the BWE being over. 76.115.167.227 01:14, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

I'm still using the first client so maybe anet fixed it during later beta versions (dunno why you would have to download the client again though). In my version, it looks sloppy. 75.191.165.117 12:07, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

This is completely irrelevant to the wiki. However, to compromise your effort of posting this comment; the game client icon has an aesthetically pleasing white-ish glowing background. This is intended and not "sloppy." - Infinite - talk 14:23, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
I did not mean to upset you or insult anet. I meant well with the comment. That white glow is not aesthetically pleasing (seeing how it is subjective) hence the comment. It is distracting from the logo since the glow overpowers it. Can't tell it is a "2" in the quick launch...looks like a pink blob so I brought it to anet's attention and did not know where to address it. Keep in mind that I am addressing the smaller icon in the quick launch bar since it is small (losing detail) and the glow is always showing - that is why I said sloppy because that glow is not part of the logo. Awesome game anet. Job well done. 75.191.165.117 11:16, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
Your issue is related to the game client and not GW2Wiki. None of the people responsibile of aesthetical designs of the game or its assets visit this particular talk page (or it's reasonable to not expect them to) and as such you are more likely to meet people with similiar issues at the official forums, not this wiki. Quick access to the professions?

I like it a lot back when the professions were "statued" on the front page. Is there any chance for that we can have that back? Or atleast make a tab under "Game Basics" called professions, instead of a detour to "professions? User Mikkelet Eme.jpgikkelet 22:48, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

I second that. Users should not have to scour around to get directly to a profession's page. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 76.21.23.167 (talk • contribs) at 15:01, 29 August 2012 (UTC).

New Link Format

First of all, sorry if this is not the right place to post it, but i couldn't figure out where this belongs. I happened to come across this site, GW2DB. For anyone familiar with Wowhead or other WoW sites, this site and it's links are the equivalent of Wowhead. It's an item and skill database and, most importantly, hovering over a link at (or based on) the site presents the item's/skill's in-game tooltip. This is very useful and I think we should look into implementing it.--Xhosant 08:53, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

We are fully aware of the GW2DB (see List of fansites), but the wiki can not allow documentation from third-party sources. In this case we must work independently and can not use the database as a source for any information. - Infinite - talk 09:26, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
He's not suggesting we copy GW2DB's data, merely that we copy the idea of popups when hovering links to skills/items. However, that would be very complicated to do right now - it'll be easier with SMW - so don't expect it to happen anytime soon. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 13:02, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
My bad, it draws the wiki's own tooltip, and here's how, hand in hand with this. Will it be easy to implement? I'm no wiki programmer to tell...--Xhosant 15:37, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
Their implementation is a lot more complicated than that one template. It involves multiple templates, some Javascript, and a couple custom extensions. We could probably adapt it to this wiki, but first we'd have to get them to release the extension code, which I wouldn't expect them to do willingly.
Once we get SMW (still no idea when that will happen), I'm pretty sure I can set something up without any extra extensions. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:18, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
Great, do just that. Depending on how long it takes, i just might get the knowledge to help in the meantime.--Xhosant 20:18, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Semantic MediaWiki

Have you guys explored the possibility of installing the Semantic MediaWiki plugin for mediawiki. I think the guild wars 2 wiki would be an excellent candidate for its functionality. For those unaware, it essentially enables you to tag information in your articles with certain attributes, enabling a user to do a query to produce a list of all pages that have that attribute.

An example might be a page about a specific zone you could tag the zone as [[has mineral::Iron]]. A user could then use a simple query to automatically create a list of all the pages that have the "has mineral" tag with Iron as its attribute, essentially creating a list of zones where you can find Iron.

I am probably not very good at describing this, so you should head over to their page http://semantic-mediaiki.org for a better explanation and examples.--Cyns 19:02, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Yep, it's going to be installed along with MW 1.19, but the ANet guys are having a bit of trouble with them. Interactive Maps?

I didn't know where else to put this idea, so if there is a better spot, please move it. I was thinking that we could make the maps of areas interactive on the wiki. Portal for out-of-game topics?

The wiki seems to be missing (or just not presenting) a set of pages that are more about the out-of-game aspects, such as the product editions, account features and add-ons, multiple accounts and multiboxing, etc. Basically information that would be relevant to someone who is interested in GW2 but not yet purchased/played it, so that they have a better understanding of the game's business model and how it might impact gameplay or the in-game economy. Currently I can only find technical articles about system requirements and the like. If someone could expand on the topics I mentioned or point me to where this information is, that would be much appreciated. 192.168.104.79 19:15, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

Wiki and Patch client being used as marketing tool... to people already own the game.

Why is there no information in the news section of the front page about a change in WvW where the worlds would enter a weekly match-up? GW2-wiki and the patch client are being used as marketing tools in a subtle way to people who already own the game! Traumatized much about The Old Republic sinking? Orichalcum Veins and Ancient Nodes

Hello, I belive that there should be an link to locate the spots of the nodes in all the areas that they are located at. Such as in "Guild Wars", "Nicholas the Traveler" was an guy that was randomly spwned and located in an varity of the world. Orichalcum Veins and Ancient Tree nodes are randomly spwned throughout the areas of "Cursed Shore", "Malchor's Leap", "Frostgorge Sound" and "Eternal Battlegrounds". Pandora Finder 21:50, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

That's already done for Orichalcum Vein. Nodes are listed in each area, not useful if you want a list of nodes for a given zone, but it's there if it's been added. Given the placement of nodes changes per server, you can't be more specific than that.--Relyk 22:33, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

For the time being, with there being only one such event, I think it suffices to include a "list of" on the page and make the achievements a section. If and when this becomes unwieldy we can decide how to separate them. 65.87.26.122 19:17, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

While the wiki understands the confusion, the "other languages" wikis are all official wikis, which is why it reads "other languages" instead of "other wikis." If we rename it to "other wikis," users may assume we affiliate with fanwikis.
The reason why the accounts aren't shared with the other-langauge official wikis is because they were added later, adopting promising fanwikis (and then turning into official ones). These wikis already had their user databases and logs, so merging them would be detrimental for those wikis.
In short, we shouldn't change the header of that section, but we can't offer a compromise on having to create separate accounts for the other official wikis.
If it is of any consolation, GWW and GW2W still share accounts. AFAIK there are no plans to change that. - Infinite - talk 14:33, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

prefix/suffix classification

I keep wanting to look for a page that describes the various prefixes and suffixes like "Knight's Coat" or "... of the Cleric" and such so I can more easily find a combination of the primary and secondary attributes I want between various pieces of equipment. Does a page like this exist, and if not, does it warrant one? And if it does, would certain unique stat distributions be included on that page? -- e.g. Ascalonian Catacombs armor has power (primary)/toughness/vitality, a combination you can't find on standard prefix/suffixes (in PVE, anyway). tanpopo 02:33, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Item nomenclature. There are quite a number of redirects that point to it, so I'm surprised you hadn't found it yet. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 02:43, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
I'm a fairly average user and I've -never- seen that page. I think the problem is that an average person that's looking for these pages isn't going to naturally going to figure that "Attribute combinations|item nomenclature" is what they should be searching for, i.e. "nomenclature" isn't a word most people often use in daily life and might be hard-pressed to apply correctly to this scenario. They'd be more likely to look up an item with the prefix they want and work backwards from there, assuming they can't directly find what they want. Also, any redirects to that page are pretty inconsistent. For example, try finding any link from the nomenclature page that actually leads back. The page for for Condition Damage links back, but not Vitality. Affix redirects (which I only found using a site-focused Google search for 'Attribute combinations|item nomenclature'), but not suffix or prefix. Malign redirects, but not Cleric or Knight. 76.27.206.9 05:08, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
So just add them missing ones. Problem solved. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 08:33, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Adding the missing redirects wouldn't hurt, but personally, when I started researching endgame equipment options, I didn't realize that all the options were derivatives of named prefixes/suffixes, so it didn't occur to me to search for those. There's quite a bit of equipment in the game that follows the prefix patterns but doesn't actually use the prefixes in the names (dungeon rewards, unique drops, jewelry...), and also a lot of adjectives that appear in item names that aren't actually connected to the stats (e.g. "krytan" or "orrian"), and with the stat combinations being fairly complicated, I just didn't realize that each combination had a proper name. It took me days, and a fairly remarkable stroke of luck, before I found the page I was looking for.
Even if every single prefix and suffix in the entire game were to redirect to Item nomenclature (which isn't even close to true at the moment), that's only one logical path to finding it; that does not qualify it as easy to find. I'd like to see a lot more links to it from pages about related concepts (I added several just yesterday, but there's probably a still lot more places where links would be helpful). --Felbryn 22:13, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
Feel free to improve on the structure or the content of Item nomeclature page, perhaps adding a section on what's not a standard item prefix. Or to introduce what you think are more paths to find the prefix information. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 02:54, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
