C++0X

Was wondering if arenanet is planing of implementation of the new c++ standards that will be arriving in 2010? Of course the game may be release before C++0x. Development speed should be faster with the new standards. But god the compilations are going to be sloooow, thanks to the STL extension (Concepts).--24.26.11.77 19:36, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Geek much...

What are we gonna do with the talkpages

When GW2 finally comes out? Will we archive them? Some of them are already getting quite long, and most of the stuff on there won't be relevant afther GW2's release? I know it's a long way to go, but, maybe we can have the discussion now. Arnout aka The Emperors Angel 08:39, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

lol gw2 comes out in 2015 no need to worry - Wuhy User Wuhy sig.jpg 00:44, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
I think we should archive them at or a little before release (I vote for a little before because everyone will want to be playing the game at release).-- Shew 14:30, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
Treat them as any other talk page - archive resolved/old discussions when the talk page gets too long. -- pling User Pling sig.png 14:47, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
I am presuming that, for sake of continuity, while not specifically referenced, people are following the standards carried over from GWW. Why not just keep that standard for the archiving of talk pages as well? 42 - talk 01:26, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Concept Art/Screenshot Page

Has there been any discussion about adding a page for this to the wiki? For now, someone could compile all of the concept art that has been released to date, and later, screenshots could be added when Anet releases them. Or is there some copyright issue?Vidal 08:12, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

have a look through here for now. Not all of them will be concept art, but that will have all concept art on the wiki atm. ~ PheNaxKian 12:33, 31 July 2009
I might create a category; I've just gotta analyze the structure on the GW1 wiki first (unless someone has already done this and wants to create the category :P).-- Shew 15:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Navbar wiki icon

Currently, when browsing the GW2 wiki, the icon that appears on browser's navigation bars is a rainbow-colored symbol more or less in the shape of the number 2. Ignoring the "WTF!?" aspect, couldn't we change it to something more similar to the new GW2 logo? Erasculio 20:29, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

I think you're referring to the favicon, although the favicon isn't rainbow coloured (the favicon is this image), and i think it's fine as it is really. Although I wouldn't mind changing the actual wiki logo to the dragon 2 thing, I think that'd look quite cool. ~ PheNaxKian 20:36, 21 August 2009
That one, it doesn't remind me of GW2 (plus it's ugly; looking at the smaller version, it appears to be a bit like a rainbow). I understand the big logo is too big for such small icon, but now that we have a simpler logo (just the red dragon), I wonder if we could replace what we're currently using. Erasculio 20:42, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
ArenaNet would have to do it. I'm guessing that they'll have some ideas for the logos (both the main logo and favicon). --User Pling sig.png Pling \ talk 20:44, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Merry Christmas All

I know this isn't very Guild Wars related, but It's a page people look at so I'm using this as a point to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a Happy new year! and I'd like you all to know GW 2 wiki...is by far the nicest wiki i've ever had the pleasure to be a part of Zachariah Zuan. 20:16, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Feedback Portal

I know it's on the Guild Wars 1 Wiki, but shouldn't there be a link to the Feedback Portal in the navigation bar? After all they are posting ideas for Guild Wars 2 there as well as ideas for Guild Wars 1.Copper Legray 04:32, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Personally, I don't like having links from one website going to another website in navigation menus or templates. For one, it makes navigating that website harder - you're basically shifted to another place when you might only want to be looking around here.
We could put a link to the feedback portal on the Main Page, though - make a suggested change on Main Page/editcopy if you wish. -- pling User Pling sig.png 15:56, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Site Suggestions

Backgrounds

Hey I just thought it would be nice if GW2Wiki could have a interesting Background color or art. It would make the page more interesting.--Knighthonor 01:02, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Ooo that's a good idea. I'm sure when GW2 comes out there will be plenty of designs/pictures available for editing :D But until then it would be sort of nice to have some type of color or art ^_^; --AmannelleUser Amannelle Me.jpg 01:40, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
I'm kinda hoping that ArenaNet will come to the party with a cool set of graphics for us. :) Have you seen this german wiki site? It looks pretty neat. -- Aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 03:21, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
It is neat, but not practical. Try changing your resolution (or simply zoom) here and there. Our main page automatically adjusts, theirs stays fixed (because those nice boxes are actually pictures). I take the stance of functionality over looks. --Xeeron 13:20, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
I agree, although maybe it's more accurate to say I want functionality and looks bundled up. I think the German wiki's main page is ugleh :) -- pling User Pling sig.png 16:47, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
What's this ...functionality... you speak of?? ;) I like how the images give you a greater control of style of the page. It is still obviously a wiki, but it has broken from the traditional feel of a wiki. In this case, at cost of functionality, taste and cohesive design.
It would be interesting to know what sort of resources and information we could be getting from ArenaNet in the lead up to the game release. -- Aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 22:31, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
Maybe the German site looks a bit confusing at first, mostly because of the images in the background to the left and to the right of the boxes but otherwise I think it's better, nicer. I feel that the design of this site is quite sterile. Without an idea. Too official, too guidelined. I also do not think it is a problem those boxes are image-based — every well-designed, well-organised and nice-to-look-at internet site is image-heavy and I think there is nothing wrong with zooming either (actually I do even believe that the ever-narrowing column here is worse than the width-adjusting page there). And as for the functionality — a wiki has to give information on the subject and has to be freely editable. And nothing of that changes (in case the new layout isn't messy). So I'd vote for a change. · LOQUAY · 11:42, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, the more I look at it the more I like it. xD It's done smoothly, has a nice look to it without looking "busy" if you know what I mean. Whoever edited the pics for it did a really good job; it's also very creative how they set up the sort of "banners" for each thing. THAT would take some time in photoshop. --AmannelleUser Amannelle Me.jpg 11:52, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) This is all very easy to make ourselves, you know. IF we'd want it to be there, that is. - Infinite - talk 13:11, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

I'd rather not have some art in the background of the wiki, it would detract from the articles/main page and would eventually prove to be an eyesore. However, unique color designs are a different matter and if done correctly would be good, but I think that the colors should relate to the "game's colors" - that is, the colors of the logo and the like. Honestly, looking at the german wiki sight, I think that's just a tiny bit overkill in the design department. This wiki's main page, specifically, hasn't change much since its conception and thus is still very much bland and should be changed, but not much can really be changed until we get gameplay info (or the game's release). This, to me, is a "sit and wait" kind of thing, else we'd be changing it constantly. -- Konig/talk 14:01, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Yea, the background probably should be plain and simple, gradient at the most. I was talking rather about the general layout and design, such as main page or infoboxes. Well, obviously... :) · LOQUAY · 17:12, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Maybe we can get the background thats pretty and not so blehhh. maybe blueee--♥Icyyy♥ 06:31, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

The pictures on the main page are very stylized and cool but as for visual navigation they are not good. Refer to the GW wiki and it's visual navigation. GW wiki is far simpler to navigate visually because all of the images are not dark ink splatters as they are here. Some of these images I have to closely inspect just to tell exactly what they are on when viewing on my 1024 res laptop. - Moo Goo --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.231.24.2 (talk).

We don't have very good images to go by to place on the main page right now. These images are concept art that is on the main page. Ariyen 07:56, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

List of Heroic Figures

Would be nice if there was a Page that list the names and links to each Heroic Lore Character in the game. (of course this would be when we get info on the characters in the game). but imo the Lore section in GW1 was dull and uninteresting. I tried to get attached to GW1 lore by going to the Wiki, but the site lack much intrest in that department.--Knighthonor 01:01, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

I think Konig and others are improving the lore sections in gww now - many of the pages on central figures are very well written now. I don't see how a list of heroic characters will be useful at this early stage (where each heroic NPC we know of is a single line of text). Perhaps this is something we can consider doing later? -- Aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 03:21, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
Sounds like what categories are for. In this case: :Category:Important figures. - Tanetris 14:50, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
As Tanetris said, on this wiki the :Category:Important figures is a list of all important figures in lore, GW1W is done the same - it's done for order and categorization, not "to make things interesting." Each article is in a category, and all categories are lists of a subject, and an article for a list of things, especially things that have its own category, is redundant. -- Konig/talk 14:01, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

List of NPC by City and Location

This cant be done now, but when the game comes out, I would like to suggest a listing of NPC by city. This way we can read each person's lore by name rather then search each individually.--Knighthonor 06:41, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

So gw1:Category:NPCs by location and its subcategories? Yes, we will likely use similar categorization. - Tanetris 12:01, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Guild Wars 2 Information Updates and Articles/Interviews

I know GW2 has a blog now and alot of info is being put there with references to interviews but would it be possible to start using this main page or a page linked from this main page to consolidate ALL current non-wiki GW2 information as well as add new links when they are available? The GWW is the best game wiki I've come across in terms of content, depth, layout and best of all; the lack of advertising. GW2W seems to be just as good so far, though until GW2 is out I can't really judge. Shadow Runner 12:07, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
Either way, this and GWW are much better then this 100%, no idea why people choose a wikia over an offical wiki tbh. --Naut User Naut Dark Blue Monk.png 12:15, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
The Guild Wars wikia is better than the Guild Wars wiki. Example: I didn't know there were more Sorrows Furnace quests because the official wiki has them hidden, the wikia has them right on the Prophecies quest list. The wikia is often updated before the wiki. Ramei Arashi 15:18, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

One of the major complaints about the GW2W is the search function and the fact that searching for "test test" doesn't take you to the page on "Test Test". Is this inherent or can it be changed at all without using 10 million redirects? Shadow Runner 12:19, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
There's an extension to improve the search feature that was requested on GWW, but for some reason (I think to do with our MediaWiki version), it wasn't installed. I'll ask at gw1:GWWT:RFTA. pling User Pling sig.png 16:51, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

class images on the main page

Great idea, but they are not to scale: the ranger is huge, and warrior is tiny in comparison to the ele. Rather than being vertically aligned, they need to be individually sized to preserve their relative scale to each other. Just take the ratio of the ele's height to her size in the composite image on gw2.com, and use that ratio to scale the height of the other images from the original. Of course, they could probably just be eyeballed, would be better than nothing. 91.124.116.180 17:19, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Tense and Timeline

Should events and articles that take place in Ghosts of Ascalon be written in the past tense? For instance, in the article about Kranxx shouldn't it say he was and mention his death? In Almorra Soulkeeper's article it mentions that "a year ago" she sent Dougal's group to retrieve the claw. Should everything be written as if it happened 1 year ago?

We could in the least think about making one in editcopy. I wouldn't be opposed at all if someone makes a scheme and we have it displayed on the main. I'm sure we'll need one when the game comes out anyway. --Lania User Lania Elderfire pinkribbon.jpg15:00, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
User:Aquadrizzt/Sandbox/Main Page. Working on color scheme...thinking greens, orange, purple and black...but looking for good match. I would also like to not just do what GWW is doing...Its a new wiki, we can be original. Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 15:16, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
I know they used Orange and black last year. They're using black and green this year. I'd prefer something completely different if possible. Like maybe a white background and colors in orange, purple, black, and green. A variety of colors on the front page to support halloween. Ariyen 20:00, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
I agree, but a thought I had was to edit the profession reveal images (or the race images, or both) to give them an eerie Halloween feel. In addition, I think possible "glow in the dark" Halloween would be cool. (Black background, flourescent green, orange and purple...) Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 23:23, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
Check page in above link to see my new "halloween-esque" profession images. (Some are better than others, I <3 the elemenatlist black one esepcially...) Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 00:25, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
I like the black colored ones too, if we're going to change that. -- ķ̌yoshĺ User Kyoshi sig.png 00:30, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
Although I'm a fan of the color purple, it isn't really a Halloween color and doesn't look quite as good as black and green do. There's my $0.02. EiveTalk 00:47, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) @Eive, yeah, Purple is more of an accent color, though the purples I used were inspired by Shatterer/dark magic-y colors, and the main problem i experienced was that i wanted to keep original color intensities, and then change them to be gothic/severe/creepy...and yeah...it didnt work out too well with some of them Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 01:03, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

I agree, I like the black. It looks awesome :) Kaon Frostblade User Kaon Frostblade Frost Sword.png 18:09, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

NPC box

Although there are not alot of NPCs in this game that have been found and named I think I should shoot forth this idea while there is still time. Adding voice actors to the NPCbox, the code is on GWW and will remain as it doesn't effect pages at the moment. I believe voice actors should be recognized and not forgotten like they were in Guild Wars 1. Sure, it can start as a project first but I want the community to agree that once it's all done, it can be implemented. see here for it. Lucian Shadowborn User Aios sig.png 01:25, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

see here for what I mean. Lucian Shadowborn User Aios sig.png 01:41, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Amazing that you bother to come here and propose something after ignoring, back at GW1W, how many members of the community were against your idea before you decided to simply implement it, despite claiming yourself that you knew you shouldn't have done that. Really, with edits like this, do you think you are going to get much support? In fact, I'll just revert your edit to the NPC infobox template at GW1W.
And about implementing it here... If you haven't noticed, there's no NPC infobox here yet. You are just wasting your time assuming that we are going to copy GW1W's infobox; and truth be said, even if we were, voice actor is something too trivial to be at the infobox anyway. Erasculio 01:51, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Well, excuse me but I was told not to and I stopped doing anything with it, so I respect your opinion but I am trying to make it more open. What about a template under trivia that can be used for all voice actors? Is that better? Oh wait, let me guess, you're going to disagree with that too since I'm obviously open for suggestions and think that npcs with voices should be listed and documented. Lucian Shadowborn User Aios sig.png 02:00, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, you're right but oh well, whats done is done. Someone brought up an interesting point that it should have a template used under trivia. Is that a better one, I think so? Lucian Shadowborn User Aios sig.png 02:05, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) I expect our NPC infobox to have next to no similarities with the GW1W version. Anyways, VA's should only be added for plot significant NPC's, and not in their infobox, only in trivia section, because it is trivial. EiveTalk 02:09, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Where we know it, it can and probably should be documented as trivia (and generally is). There is no need for a template to do this, which would likely just complicate editing. - Tanetris 02:21, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Our words on other wikis

So I was on the Zam GuildFan site today and noticed they had a wiki. Nosey soul that I am I take a look at RC to see what's going on and have a look at a few pages. Here are a few examples; Divinity's Reach Asura. If the pages seem somewhat familiar it is because those words come from this wiki.

While I'm pleased we're making something which is worth copying I'm a little annoyed because they're not attributing where the words and effort collating the information is coming from. I guess I'd like to approach them to make sure we're at least attributed as the GFDL licence requires. Do any of you feel strongly about this? -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 07:16, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

I noticed that when browsing the site last night. I wouldn't have a major problem with it, but as you said there doesn't appear to be any crediting so I am kinda irked. There was an issue on the GWW where we couldn't copy-paste from Gwiki due to licencing, wouldn't something similar apply here? ShadowRunner 08:20, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Without attributing the editors and the license, they cannot keep the content, whatever we might feel about it. pling User Pling sig.png 11:34, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
I posted a comment on their Asura page's talk stating that they need to express it originally or attribute it. -- Kyoshi User Kyoshi sig.png 16:23, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
ShadowRunner, their license is compatible with GW2W's (in fact, it's the same). The issue is only attribution. Provide that and they're good to go. Felix Omni Signature.png 16:27, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Greetings. I am Bludwyng, the ZAM Network Sr. Wiki Admin. I was apprised this morning of this issue and am working to correct it. Bohtauri is a new hire (for GW2 and Rift). It seems he misunderstood somewhat my discussion with him about accreditation and when it does and does not need to be used. He lives in China and is asleep right now, but I will raise the issue with him as soon as he wakes up. All pages that have ANY borrowed content from here SHOULD be using the pagename template and should be listed here. There is no excuse for this lapse and, if you like, I will boil him in chicken fat and drag him across the square at high noon, but truly it's just a noob-blunder. It will NOT happen again. As quickly as possible all borrowed content WILL be tagged, rewritten, or removed. --Bludwyng 16:45, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Although I normally support corporal punishment for tiny mistakes, I think in this case we could forgive him. Felix Omni Signature.png 16:49, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
I am sure his fiance appreciates the leniency in this case. My thanks. --Bludwyng 16:52, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
You should make him go on an epic quest for the Holy Grail, or at least a shrubbery. --JonTheMon 17:02, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
And then... to chop down the tallest tree in the forest with... A HERRING! --Bludwyng 17:03, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Heyo folks. Name's Cody Bye and I'm the Director of Content here at ZAM. I just wanted to echo Blud's words regarding our GW2 wiki, accreditation, and just expand on what our real goal is for the ZAM wiki. To start, I've gone ahead and taken our wiki down until all accreditation can be implemented by Bohtauri. That's his job and he should've done it right the first time. Second, you guys are doing a great job, and it's definitely a compliment to you that we're looking here first for info. Finally, all of the wikis at ZAM have twofold purposes. First is to provide information on the game, which includes doing guides on content rather than just simply listing out info. Leveling guides, instance guides, etc will all go there. The other part is that almost all of our sites have some sort of database or resource element to them. Our wikis are tied into our databases in various ways to allow users to help keep content updated, etc. So, again, we're not here to step on your toes. Indeed, our goal is to support you and provide supplemental info to players of the game. --CodyBye 17:48, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
To that end, as we have done on may of our other wikis, once we start doing the mob abd item and quest stuff, there should be a "Other Resources" box on each page. This will contain a link, based on the page name, to other sites (such as yours). I have done this in our EQ2, RoM, and Aion wikis, and a few others, because I believe strongly that the professional-based sites (such as ours) and the more user-created Fansites are a COMMUNITY and should never regard each others as competitors. When that happens, it is usually the fans that lose. So, be looking for those automatic links to your site from ours in the near future, and I would hope that you might do something similar back to ours. --Bludwyng 19:07, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Why do you guys need a wiki there? That'd make 3 in existence. I think that one should cover most everything. Also, everything on your wiki seems copied from our's. Isn't that stealing? 72.148.31.114 20:47, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
It is entirely allowable for sites that share the same license to use each other's resources. As for displaying links to other wikis here, I don't know whether it's feasible. This is the official Guild Wars 2 Wiki, hosted on ArenaNet's servers; while we run it, they technically control it. I agree that there shouldn't be competition between fansites, but GW2W isn't actually one. It does merit consideration, at least, but I can't really predict what consensus will decide. Of course, Guild Wars Wiki (the first one) and ArenaNet do maintain a list of fansites, and I have no doubt that GuildFans will qualify for that. Felix Omni Signature.png 21:13, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
List of fansites. pling User Pling sig.png 21:30, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks to you both Blud and Cody for taking the time to drop by to let us know the situation. I greatly appreciate it. I think proper attribution is the only problem that needs attending to - evisceration of involved parties is not required. :)
As Felix says any decision to cross link other resources would be a community one so would involve much discussion here. It isn't likely we'd make any clear decision before the game is released when we'd have more than a skeleton community and a better idea of what ArenaNet's game is and what they want to do here. -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 21:53, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
I would like to apologise for my actions and my noobiness, All previous pages I've built and any future content I gather from here will be accredited appropriately. Sorry. Bohtauri 08:33, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
I am very pleased with the outcome of this; when I posted my tweet (no, I didn't see this discussion before) yesterday morning, I didn't think this would be resolved so quickly. Thank you, Bludwyng, CodyBye and Bohtauri! poke | talk 10:29, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
All accreditation has been back-tracked and is now up to date, please dont hesitate to mention to me at http://rift.zam.com/users/Bohtauri if there is any content that has not been accredited. Bohtauri 18:02, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Can't see "Last Update: Dadadada

ANybody elce having this issue? --~~Lotus~~ 14:15, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

If you're talking about the game update notice, this wiki doesn't have that - it's only on GWW (where it's working fine). pling User Pling sig.png 19:09, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
LMAO I said that this morning, when I was tired. I relised this when i got on my PC after I got home xD --~~Lotus~~ 23:34, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Basic question

This is bugging me, are the explorable areas instanced or are they shared by all players (like most other mmo)s? - Lucian Shadowborn User Aios sig.png 04:44, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Explorable areas are persistent (shared). PvP, dungeons, starting cities, and personal story lines are the only instanced things in GW2, iirc. –~=Ϛρѧякγ AHHH! (τѧιк) ←♥– 04:49, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
