Locations[edit]

Currently I'm just putting the locations on this page. It leads to an extremely long page (and TOC) though, but the TOC does allow very quick look-up one they're here. Two things concern me though. First, should the possible locations be on a separate page so people can see the rest of the page easier? I don't think creating 150 pages, one per location, just to show them a couple screenshots and a sentence or two of how to find the location is very efficient (I'm likening it to the same situation as pages for waypoints). And second, I'd like to see how easy we can make the location look-up, to the point where players can use /wiki <location name> and find this page. As before, I don't think creating 150 pages (even if just for redirects) is very efficient. They could right now just do /wiki Guild Trek and find this page. Any thoughts? Maybe we can tell the TOC to begin collapsed and put a note right above it to expand it for location lookup? Vahkris 14:20, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Convert it to a table. The alphabetical ordering should be sufficient for people to find locations easily, they don't need to be in the TOC. Also, Ctrl+F for browser search. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 14:31, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Converted. The table can be extended with area name and even a map thumbnail as people find the locations.
The only way that /wiki <trek name> will work is if we create 150 redirects. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 14:37, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Sheesh, that was a fast conversion. You have some macro or something like that to do this quickly? I figured the redirects would be difficult, and I don't really feel like creating 150 redirects (and I'd probably be chastised for doing so), so /wiki Guild Trek will have to do. Kari's dash was missed because it was initially wrong and I had to add the dash manually, so it wasn't like all the others. Vahkris 14:45, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
I added a couple images I pulled over from Dulfy (images have reference) to test the layout with map thumbnails. I notice a slight format issue around the thumbnail, not sure if this is a clean way to do it. Any thoughts from anyone before I start adding more? Vahkris 14:52, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
I personally would love redirects: it's only one-time job, it's invisible for readers and doesn't mess the page, also it's helpful. And, I'd like to see more precise pictures in table, like screenshots of the marks - maps frequently aren't that helpful, and in such activity every minute matters. MalGalad 15:11, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
I'll see about adding a second image for the mark, maybe a notes column for text hints such as "the mark is located past a small jumping puzzle", if it doesn't get too cramped. I might go ahead and create the redirect pages, I just didn't know whether people thought creating 150 redirect pages to Guild Trek was worthwhile, or efficient from a wiki admin perspective. Vahkris 15:26, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Ah, I see it now - the others were en-dashes, probably added by the same Microsoft product that did the smartquotes. I can't tell the difference in my fixed-width text editor (UltraEdit) so I didn't see it at first. Also, that's how I converted it so fast - I can find/replace over linebreaks.
I fixed your images - the "thumb" parameter is special, it automatically puts a frame around the image and floats it to the right. For in a table like this, just give it a size: e.g. 100px for uniform width, or x100px for uniform height. Feel free to modify the size so the thumbnails are readable, just try not to make them too huge. I'd recommend cropping the images down to only show the immediate area name. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 15:10, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Good point. Thanks for the hint on the thumbnails. I'll convert the rest of the thumbnails to a somewhat readable size. I kinda figure no matter what, players will need to click on the images to pull up the full size as the thumbnails will not be readable. Vahkris 15:15, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Right, you're just copying the maps from Dulfy. Looks like most of them are somewhat zoomed-out... meh. I'd like it if we could eventually replace them with max-zoom images showing a clean path from the nearest waypoint, since that will make for the cleanest possible thumbnails. That'll be a massive project to undertake, but I'm not one to shy away from massive projects.
I don't know that we need images of the mark itself. Most of them seem like they're pretty obvious if you follow the map to the right location. A column for text notes is fine, since a few of them, like Lakebottom Underpass, are somewhat hidden.
If you want to create the redirects, that's fine. The location names are unique with respect to existing area/PoI names, as far as I can tell from a quick speedread, so there shouldn't be any pagename conflicts. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 15:29, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, currently just pulling from Dulfy. She received them from others, so they aren't uniform, and her site's method of displaying images makes it less important. I'd like to update them like you said too, although right now just having the info in the first place is useful. I'll crop them a bit closer, I began a separate conversation for the redirects below. Vahkris 15:31, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
All pictures have been uploaded. Vahkris 21:47, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
And now I've added various notes for many locations. At this point all that's really left is better images, IMO (some do not have a clear path to location, and many are zoomed out). Vahkris 13:58, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Repeatable for influence?[edit]

I don't know the answer to this, but I think it should be added to the page whether or not you can repeat treks for influence like you can with guild bounty trainings.

I have no idea either. I'd imagine most guilds only do this trek once per week due to no individual rewards. Vahkris 14:13, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
I know this is a few months later, but I just did 2 tier 1 treks and received no influence for the second trek. Added a note to the rewards section. Unknown if doing a tier 2 trek prevents you from getting influence from a tier 1.. It -might- not reward influence if it doesn't reward merits. raudrin (talk) 04:42, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
Influence is the same as guild merits in this regard, that is, you only get the influence rewarded once per week. In our case, we did a Tier 1 trek, followed by a Tier 2 trek in the same week. We only received the difference for the Tier 2 trek, i.e. 100 influence and 2 merits. I'll update the page accordingly. --106.68.105.56 09:42, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Redirects question[edit]

If redirects are created, is there any way I can have the page redirect so that the page is scrolled down to the specific location instead of always coming to the top of the page? If it involves adding some invisible tag to each location within the table, that is fine, I'm just wondering if it's possible. Vahkris 15:28, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Template:Anchor was made for this purpose. I added one for Guild Trek#Anya's Patch to demonstrate. I can use my find/replace magic to propagate it through the table. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 15:31, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
We could make a template just for this page (thus hiding the awful format :P ) , e.g.
|-
| {{{1|}}} || {{{2|}}} || {{{3|}}} || [[File:Trek {{{1|}}} Location.jpg|150px]] {{Anchor|{{{1|}}}}}
and then type {{/line|Anya's Patch|Diessa Plateau|Town of Nolan}}
but yeah its no better than having the ugly line. Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 15:55, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Oh and I forgot the obvious bit, you can get redirects to target sections just as you can with linking to sections (as dr ish did above), e.g. like this -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 16:00, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Go ahead and work your find and replace magic to add the anchors when you get a free chance. It's much easier to create the redirect pages than I initially thought. The only thing I'm not particularly liking is the fact the player has to scroll up because the words are centered vertically. I don't know if there's anything that can be done about that though. Vahkris 19:11, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
What browser are you using? In Chrome, following the redirects for Anya and Altar brings the row to the top of my screen. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 19:15, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Firefox, and to be more specific: it does bring it to the top of my screen, but it sets it where the text is at the very top instead of the top of the row itself, which results in cutting half the image off so the user has to scroll up to see the whole image. I just tested it in Chrome and it looks good there, IE shows the same thing as Firefox. It just zeroes in on the words "Anya's Patch" instead of the top of the row. Vahkris 19:31, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Doesn't look like there's any way around that, other than to set "vertical-align:top" for the entire table (accomplished by adding "top" to the STDT template). I don't really like how it looks that way, but if it makes the anchors work better... —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 20:41, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
It's minor, but something to keep in mind. Formatting of the table might need to be looked at after everything's populated. Vahkris 20:43, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
We could set the anchors to be the line above instead illogical but should be far enough down for you to see the top of the map. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 20:51, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Holy cow I just solved this. I took a look at what the anchor template actually does: it sets the id attribute of a null-content span tag. We can do the same thing to the rows in this table, without using the template. Gimme a couple minutes and I'll have it done. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 22:45, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
I would've created that row template by now--Relyk ~ talk > 22:50, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
I've been generating the table from an Excel spreadsheet, so I can easily re-generate it with a different format. However, other than adding notes, this table really isn't going to change much anymore, so there may not be much benefit to a template at this point. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 22:56, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Redirect pages are all created. I made a list here to test: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/User:Vahkris/Sandbox Vahkris 01:43, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Waypoint Chat Links[edit]

Do we have a list of the waypoint chatlinks somewhere? I figure it'd be rather awesome to have each location's waypoint chatlink on its line so players can easily grab the closest waypoint. Time is of the essence here, after all. Vahkris 16:13, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

I knew my work will not be forgotten! xD Here they are. MalGalad 16:17, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Great, now I just need some code from the good Dr to add it into the table (because AFAIK it's only a part of the infoboxes so far). Already created the column. Vahkris 16:25, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
<span class="mapId">222</span> produces 222 (this is Nolan Waypoint, closest to Anya's Patch). I can template that so you only need to do something like {{game link|map|222}}. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:35, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Template might be best, as I get the feeling it'll be useful in more places than just here. No rush, I'm still adding images, etc. Vahkris 16:41, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
It would probably also be best to give the waypoint name. If you'll let me, I can handle the waypoint column. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 18:33, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Go for it. I'll just be adding images for a while, so I won't be updating the table.Vahkris 18:35, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Waypoints are in. I reduced the image size to 200px at the same time, mostly to save on vertical space, but also because the table was almost too wide for x1024 resolutions. Most of them still look good enough at that size. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 22:03, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

151 Locations?[edit]

Something weird I noticed. I'm pretty much pulling the list of locations from Dulfy, and I've seen in several places that there are 150 locations...but Dulfy has Toxal Spill listed twice. I was going to brush it off as just a duplicate (there's another one in her list) but she has two different locations listed for it, both in Brisban Wildlands. This actually makes 151 unless I'm missing something. Vahkris 21:23, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

I noticed that too - one of them is a duplicate of Gallow Canyons. There are 5 locations each in 30 zones (25 explorable + 5 cities) for a total of 150. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 21:26, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Ah, there it is. Vahkris 21:35, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

30 new Guild Treks[edit]

Added the 30 new guild treks from the April 30th release, just need the maps now. Vahkris 14:15, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Concerning guesting from another server[edit]

Guild members guesting from another server cannot participate in treks: they will not be able to trigger any of the markers and they will not see any of the pertinent information in the guild panel, i.e. the list of locations will be blank and there will not be a countdown timer.

This is no longer true. I was guesting from another server tonight - although I couldn't see the targets on the guild panel, I could interact with the marker when I found it. So this must have been fixed. --Joerg73 (talk) 20:42, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

Forgotten Grotto notes[edit]

It should state that you need to reach the top of a section which requires jumping. --115.134.2.52 00:54, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

Gliding[edit]

I wonder if "no fly zones" will be applied to any of these... I suspect accessing some points will be made a lot easier with gliding available, Spectrehaunt Socket springs readily to mind here. --BramStoker (talk, contribs) 11:53, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Feedback 2017/08/28[edit]

Would it be possible to put the image that the trek shows with each destination?. --Separ (talk) 02:53, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

I had a look at the location and I have tweaked the wording slightly (location wasn't immediately obvious to me). None of the other locations on this page actually have a second image which I found surprising - however on that basis I'd be inclined to leave the article as it is for the moment. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 14:18, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

Feedback 2022/12/05[edit]

Someone who knows what they're doing, please take a look at this page. There are many Waypoints missing at this time. --CyrusAlbeon (talk) 18:57, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

Fixed it by purging the appropriate pages. More info about the problem here: Empty or incomplete SMW queries --Seeeeew (talk) 01:42, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
