Date incorrectly changed[edit]

The patch was released at 2:04am on July 11th UTC, however Tarun changed it to July 10th, likely due to it being that date in their own timezone. Please refer to Help:Ask a wiki question#What timezone used for when game updates occur?. Placing this notice here so a revert war doesn't start up. --Wolfie User Wolfie sig.jpg (talk|contribs) 07:02, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

This is because ArenaNet is based in the Pacific Time Zone, not UTC. Bellevue, Washington, United States to be exact. Thus, the date of 2015-07-10 is correct. -- Tarun (talk) 08:29, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
Did you even read the link provided, or just posted your own view and opted to change the article name? Chieftain Alex, Relyk, and myself all pointed out that we sticking with using UTC. This has been discussed several times in the past, though not have the links for those, we talking too long ago now, but like Relyk said using non-UTC time "tended towards date conflicts and confusion whenever I posted updates in PST. We can rely on UTC time in regards to what day we consider an update released". So why then go back and change this over again, some near 2 weeks afterwards? We using UTC to determine times, why insist upon having this one exception? The game has an international audience, so by sticking with a Universal Time Code, it the same for all. --Wolfie User Wolfie sig.jpg (talk|contribs) 09:10, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) I don't see any discussion that decided that's correct Tarun. If there was, please enlighten me. We aren't required to use a specific timezone. The main reason for UTC is to have a consistent timezone as reference. Unless we have other reasons for PST to discuss, I'm reverting.--Relyk ~ talk < 09:16, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
You take into account when the staff did this. Being in Belleview, they released the patch on July 10th, 2015. Not on July 11th. Software developers do these things based upon their location, not a generic date/time. Additionally, you can see that poke mentioned that they believed it was based off of Pacific Date/Time as well. -- Tarun (talk) 18:22, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
"You take into account when the staff did this."
  • UTC does exactly that. It also avoids people around the world from having to understand not just timezones in general, but daylight savings time.
"Software developers do these things based upon their location, not a generic date/time."
  • For a game that exists the world over, and runs on servers the world over, and has people that control it the world over, Bellevue's location is irrelevant.
"you can see that poke mentioned that they believed it was based off of Pacific Date/Time as well."
  • So?

Doesn't matter where they run the game, that's irrelevant. Guild Wars 1 was run the world over (according to how you're stating this) and the patch notes for the Guild Wars 1 wiki were based on the Washington state location. Therefore making the location in relation to this discussion indeed relevant. Poke's statement shows that others are inclined to believe the same. That Pacific Time is how it functions and is acceptable. That there is no set standard. -- Tarun (talk) 03:31, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
Edit: I see that Fenix Omni asked a member of the staff to help clarify this. Posting the quote here to benefit others, "Stephane confirmed that the official patch notes on the forums use ArenaNet's time, Pacific. We should stay in sync with them." Hope this helps. -- Tarun (talk) 03:37, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
To be clear, the "We should stay in sync with them", was Felix voicing his opinion, not quoting Stephane. Also, the wiki is community run, Anet provide the hardware, bandwidth, tech support etc, but it is the GW2 community that runs the wiki, so I do not think a Anet staff member opinion should be considered absolute anyway. Still not getting an answer to why do patch notes HAVE to be set to Anet's timezone, when everything else on the wiki is using UTC. --Wolfie User Wolfie sig.jpg (talk|contribs) 23:29, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
