Refinement is the process of transforming crafting materials from a basic state into materials that can be used to create weapon and armor components. The refinement process takes place at the crafting stations appropriate to the item.
Recipes for refinements unlocks automatically as you progress through crafting levels. More information, including specific uses and variations, can be found on each item's page.
Bolts of cloth
Bolts of cloth are crafted from cloth scraps. They are used in the making of armor components, insignia, and runes (, , ) and bags ().
Leather squares are obtained by refining leather scraps or sections at a crafting station. Leather squares are used to craft light and medium armor components (, ), packs (), and bow strings ().

Ingots are created by refining ores, except for three alloyed types (Bronze, Steel, and Darksteel) that require a lump of another material (Tin, Coal, or Primordium). They are used to create armor components (Armorsmiths); weapon components (Artificers, Huntsmen, and Weaponsmiths), consumable buffs (Artificers); storage boxes (Armorsmiths); and accessory components (Jewelers).
Wood planks are crafted from logs. Planks are used to make dowels and weapon components (, , ).
Dowels are created from planks and are used to make inscriptions (, , ).
Ectoplasm refinements use various materials to create ascended crafting materials, which can be refined into other ascended crafting materials. Each recipe can only be crafted once per day per account, on the standard daily reset.
Obsidian refinements use account bound materials and are used to craft Vision Crystals and Lesser Vision Crystals.
