Playable races
From Guild Wars 2 Wiki
The five playable races of Guild Wars 2 are the Tyrian species that can be selected for player use upon character creation.
The choices that will be available at the game's release are:
Each of the races has a separate starting area in game, however as the story progresses they are able to interact with other races. The choice of race will, of course, alter the character's personal story. Each race will also have several character modifiers to create a unique backstory, such as the asuran college or human heritage, which will personalise the character's story further.
Each race has its own unique ability - for example, the norn may transform into different half norn/half beast forms. Each race will have its own separate advantages and disadvantages, but these will be limited to maintain game balance and to ensure that players make their choices more on look and feel than mechanics.[1] For example, each race will have a number of racial skills which add flavour and additional options to the race but the skills will be weaker than their profession provided equivalents.[2]
An early interview stated that ArenaNet wants the race chosen by the player to have a "pretty big" impact on the way the character plays and that in the future, additional races will be added.[3]
