Hearts and Minds is the sixteenth and final story step of the Heart of Thorns story.

Objectives[edit]

Storm Mordremoth's inner sanctum.
  • Enter the chasm.
  • Check in with your allies.
  • Defeat the Mordrem ambush.
  • Find Trahearne.
  • Speak with Trahearne.
  • Choose two allies to come with you into Mordremoth's mind.
  • Enter Mordremoth's mind.
  • (Two out of the three encounters, depending on your choice)
    • Defeat the vision of Eir and Garm.
    • Activate the Reality Rift.
    • Defeat the vision of the Pale Tree.
    • Activate the Reality Rift.
    • Defeat the vision of Canach.

Walkthrough[edit]

Preparation

This mission contains a number of foes with high health, and as such this mission is much easier when attempted with a group of other players.

It is possible to solo the mission with a character that can tank damage well, allowing you to possibly survive a hit during the gliding section of the final boss fight. Condition removals are also helpful. Remember to take a couple Powerful Potion of Mordrem Slaying, they are very affordable to buy off the Trading Post.

The final fight with Mordremoth features mechanics that can lead to instant death and a reset of the long boss fight if you make an error. In particular, if you miss the vents propelling you up or get knocked out of the sky with rocks when Mordremoth electrifies the arena, you will likely be killed. This is another reason for attempting this fight in a group because it allows the other players to continue the fight if some are killed and put in a holding area.

Several fights within the instance may require fighting the bosses in or near AoE fields, and therefore it is recommended to have a ranged weapon available.

Entrance

After completing Bitter Harvest, glide to the bottom of the helix and enter the instance. If you left the lobby for the mission, Agent Zrii at Pact Base Camp Waypoint can bring you back.

After a short conversation you will be ambushed. Kill the Mordrem. Along the path you will encounter further Mordrem, either defeat them or alternatively circumvent the enemies by gliding past them. Trahearne will ask you to choose two allies to take into the dream. You can choose between Canach, Caithe and Braham. You will face two 'illusions'. The easier options are Canach and Braham.

Two fights with your blighted allies

Upon entering the dream you will encounter the blighted visions of the two allies you previously chose, one at a time.

If Braham is chosen you will encounter his mother, Blighted Eir Stegalkin and Blighted Garm. Eir keeps at range, firing arrows which leave fiery tracks on the floor. Avoid these lines while attacking Garm. This is difficult as Eir keeps firing at you and teleports around. A ranged weapon will aid you in kiting both Garm and Eir. Occasionally, the ranger will port to the center of the Arena and begin rapid-firing volleys of arrows into the air. The pattern is predictable and easily avoided so long as you continue to strafe in one direction. Meanwhile, try to down Garm to force Eir to resurrect him. While she is distracted, you are able to attack her in melee range. Use crowd control to break her defiance bar when she is reviving Blighted Garm to make her stick around longer. Continue this process until both Eir and Garm are defeated and you can activate the rift.

If Canach is chosen you will encounter his blighted form, Blighted Canach. He remains at range firing black orbs and fireballs randomly. These are all easily avoided as long as you strafe in any direction. The indicators on the floor will tell you which type of attack is coming, the smaller the ring the more dangerous. The smaller red rings on the floor will stun you and allow Blighted Canach to attack you further. Make sure you dodge roll these attacks. Toward the mid way point of the battle Canach will use his shield to reflect the attacks (except for the blazing ones) back at Blighted Canach. In order for this to work you must stand behind or inside of Canach's shield bubble. Keep repeating this process until Canach tells you he can no longer block the attacks, at which point he will drop his shield and allow you to take over this role. Reflect the black orbs using Shield Stance in order to whittle down Blighted Canach's health. Once the rift is open activate it.

If Caithe is chosen you will encounter a blighted version of the Pale Tree. The Blighted Pale Tree begins the fight by summoning small spaces on the ground that fire slow-moving black missiles in a ring around them, and creates more of them as the fight progresses. As she takes certain amounts of damage, she summons twisted sylvari to sacrifice themselves and make her stronger, followed by an arena-wide area attack. After that she adds a delayed ring attack as well as a few basic melee and ranged attacks, and this pattern follows until she reaches low health. At that point she starts using two adjacent ring attacks at the same time, and constantly has sylvari coming to sacrifice themselves to heal her and make her standard attacks stronger. Occasionally she will launch an arena-wide AoE during this time. Stay mobile and kill as many of her summons as possible to make the fight easier.

Mordremoth

Once your two illusions are killed it is time to face Mordremoth.

Phase 1: Attack Mordremoth at close range and whittle down his health. He is very easy to fight and will do little damage. He has one straightforward swiping attack that is easily avoided. Stay at close range due to his whirling wind attack which remains active for a longer duration. Occasionally Mordremoth will leap behind you, which has no effect on damage other than to change his location in the arena.

Phase 2: Mordremoth will summon Blighted Rytlock Brimstone. Focus on the blighted version and damage it until the rift is open. Once you have a Blighted enemy at a quarter of their health you can activate the rift which will turn the Blighted illusions into your allies. Continue to attack Mordremoth until he summons Blighted Marjory Delaqua. Repeat the same process as with Rytlock. As soon as you defeat Blighted Jory get ready to use the vents to take to the sky and glide as Mordremoth will electrify the floor. Look for the vents and walk over them to be propelled upwards, then press Space to engage your glider. Keep gliding over vents to stay aloft. Once the floor is no longer electrified you can resume attacking Mordremoth. The arena will be crumbled on one side limiting your attack space. It is important to pay attention so you know where you can glide the next time the floor is electrified.

Phase 3: Once Mordremoth is at half health he will summon Blighted Caithe, Blighted Canach or Blighted Braham Eirsson (depending on which ally you didn't take into the Dream), followed by Blighted Trahearne (if the character who started the instance belongs to no order; alternatively you will face Blighted versions of your old order friends: Blighted Tybalt Leftpaw, Blighted Forgal or Blighted Sieran). Attack both Blighted versions until their health is at a quarter and then activate the rift. Mordremoth will once again electrify the floor and you must use the vents to glide, although this time around you need to dodge pieces of floor Mordremoth hurls at you as well. Further progressed gliding techniques, such as Lean Techniques, aid you during the air phase. Once the arena floor is no longer electrified continue your attack on Mordremoth.

Phase 4: Once Mordremoth is at a quarter health he will electrify the floor once more and begin hurling stones at you. He may knock you out of the air and to the ground, which may quickly kill you. There is a vine in the arena that can be reached with some gliding skill, and standing on it will protect you from this danger. You will be left with a bridge to fly back and forth on. This will be your last time gliding as the end of the battle is near.

Phase 5: Mordremoth will send minions your way while one of your allies attempts to open the rift. Clear the minions before activating the rift which will stun Mordremoth allowing you to attack. Repeat as many times as necessary to defeat Mordremoth.

If you are defeated at any point in the fight, you will be placed in a protected shielded area. If you are doing the instance solo, simply talk to the Retry Mote to return to the area, however you will have to restart from Phase 1 of the fight, and if you are in a party, you will not be able to rejoin the fight until Mordremoth is defeated.

After the fight

Back with Trahearne, pick up Caladbolg and let the story play out. You can now regrow Caladbolg into an ascended weapon of your choosing through the achievement Knight of the Thorn.

Challenge Mode[edit]

Challenge Mode is intended for full 5-person parties, and is activated by interacting with the Challenge Mote once you reach Trahearne. Enemies have much larger health pools and do significantly more damage than in normal mode. Completing the instance with Challenge Mode activated will unlock the Migraine achievement. Since the enemies have more health, the mission takes longer, so it is recommended to have at least one hour available. Most players tend to die the most at the updraft phase, so ensure that they are familiar with the tips described above. If your entire group should die at any point upon entering the dream, remember that the restart mode is available - this will however reset the health of the current boss to 100%.

Blighted Eir

Blighted Eir's AoE longbow attack now tracks more aggressively, and also tracks all players in the party, so you must be careful you don't run through someone else's trail. The AoE also does much more damage, and rapidly stacks burning on anyone caught inside it. It is possible to quickly reach over 100 stacks of burning so be careful not to step inside or stop for too long. The duo may also immobilize you every now and then, which can quickly lead to some very bad situations if you can't un-snare yourself. Eir's defiance bar is also much stronger here. The best strategy is to kill Garm as fast as possible each time he is revived so that Eir doesn't have time to use her AoE again, followed by breaking Eir's defiance bar to increase damage dealt.

  • Most of the damage from the fire AoE actually comes from ticks of static damage from each individual fire patch, so the only real way to safely "stand in the fire" is with damage immunity or skills that convert damage to healing rather than Resolution or continuous Condition Removal to counteract the Burning.
Blighted Canach

Blighted Canach has a much longer breakbar here than in normal mode. Canach's grenades can quickly inflict many lethal stacks of bleeding, and the rockets leave an AoE field that inflicts at least 5 stacks of burning per pulse. Condition removal is therefore recommended, as is the use of the Adrenal Mushrooms to recharge the removal skills. When prompted by your allied Canach to use his shield, be aware that the sole skill provided by the shield does not always destroy the Blighted Canach's projectiles.

Blighted Pale Tree

Blighted Pale Tree requires much higher DPS than in normal mode, as during the final 25% of her health she will spawn Sylvari continuously, making it very hard to prevent her from healing, additionally the explosions they cause when they reach her are map wide and undodgeable. For these reasons the choice of Braham and Canach as your allies is recommended instead.

Mordremoth

The Mordremoth fight, taking into account the fight with your past allies, takes the longest time out of the entire mission (getting to this stage should take less than 15 minutes, expect another 30 minutes for this stage). The line-based AoE fields still inflict Slow and Confusion, so avoid standing in them. Some form of crowd control skills would be advisable for the final fifth phase to prevent the Smothering Shadows from overwhelming you.

  • To get this achievement you must sneak past Mordrem blighting pods while getting to Trahearne. Red rings indicate the locations to avoid. The best way to get past them is to use any kind of teleport skill.
  • Consider only moving when the red rings are (temporarily) visible.
  • The first and third sets of blighting pods are generally the most difficult to get past safely if you are walking. This is due to the left blighting pod of the first set and right blighting pod of the third set having their red outline partially inside water puddles. Stick a bit closer to the ones on the opposite side to make it easier.
  • An easy solution is to glide to the pods (above the gate) at the start of the mission then trigger all the pods (and kill the foes). After triggering all pods, you can go back at the start of the mission to kill the scripted foes to get the eligibility tag. You can then run safely to Trahearne.

  • Complete the fight before Phase 1 with all three allies. You do not need to complete the instance to earn the achievement.
  • You can get this achievement in one playthrough. Pick any two allies and complete the fight with your first ally. You can then abandon the instance with the tracker staying at 1/3 fights completed. Once you re-enter the instance you'll find yourself back in front of Traherne. Then just pick the other two allies whos fights you haven't completed yet.

  • To get the achievement normally, you must not take any damage from the electrified floor, the thrown rocks (starting from the second flight phase), and the torment orbs (in the third flight phase). The rocks can be easily dodged by canceling glide mid-flight to drop a few feet before redeploying it. The orbs won't fire at you if you're far enough away, so staying on the northern edge of the map will keep you safe.
  • The easiest way to complete this is to join a party and become defeated before the first flight section (immediately after Marjory becomes your ally), and allow your party members to complete the mission. This can be easily accomplished by repeatedly jumping off the side of the platform until the downed penalty instantly defeats you.
    • Be aware that your NPC allies, if they are alive, will always attempt to revive you if they are within roughly 900 range of you, potentially causing this method to take much longer than expected if they continue to successfully revive you. Thus, it might be a better idea to just have your party members repeatedly pull you out of downed state so you can defeat yourself quicker if the NPCs keep getting in your way.
  • An alternative is to glide onto the thorny vine in the northern edge of the map during the flight portions of the fight. Standing on a particular spot on it will cause it to block Mordremoth's rocks, allowing you to safely sit out the entire flight phase if done properly.
    • Facing the center of the map, this spot is roughly as far back on the vine that you can stand and a little to its left side. This will cause your character to stand on its side, slightly lower than its topmost area. From there, the vine will block most of the view of the map and the rocks thrown by Mordremoth.
    • If positioned incorrectly, Mordremoth's rocks can still hit you and cause you to be disqualified.
    • If you fall off while trying to position yourself, you can quickly recover and be lifted by the updraft back up.
  • If qualification for the achievement is lost, you can use the Retry Mote to restart the Mordremoth portion of the instance instead of starting again from the very beginning of Hearts and Minds. You can do this by becoming defeated as above. This will cause you to respawn in the secluded area where the Retry Mote is located.

    • The torment orbs from the third flight section will cause you to be disqualified if they hit you even after the flight section ends. Staying away from them until the source disappears will prevent them from disqualifying you.

Canach: Sound strategy, Commander. Turn the tables and attack the dragon the same way it's been attacking us? Brilliant.
Canach: You don't need a translator to understand that—the dragon doesn't like this idea.
Trahearne: Yes...strike at the dragon's mind through the Dream. It can work. And my connection will provide the access you need.
<Character name>: The Rata Novans said each Elder Dragon has a weak spot. We just identified Mordremoth's.
Trahearne: I'm ready. If I concentrate, I can open a path into the Dream...into Mordremoth's mind.
Trahearne: Your minds will make the journey, but your bodies will remain here in the cavern.
Rytlock Brimstone: (growl) I've seen enough metaphysical landscapes lately. I'll stay behind to keep the Mordrem at bay.
Marjory Delaqua: I'll stay too. If something goes wrong...or Trahearne isn't what he seems to be...I'll be standing by.

Blighted Eir Stegalkin: Thanks to you, my legend ended in failure—fallen, forgotten, and far from home.
Braham: I'm done listening to these lies. You're not my mother—you're Mordremoth's toy.

After fighting Blighted Eir for a while:

After defeating Blighted Eir:

<Character name>: Let's widen the rift. The more we crack open this nightmare, the weaker Mordremoth becomes.

After using the Reality Rift on Blighted Eir:

Braham: Commander, at the end there...she seemed like herself again.
<Character name>: That's because we overcame Mordremoth's illusion. And the real Eir would be proud of how you did it.
Canach's encounter

Encountering Blighted Canach:

Canach: Who are you supposed to be?
Blighted Canach: I am you. What you were meant to be, what you will be: Mordremoth's loyal servant, and gladly so.
Blighted Canach: You are strong, but lack focus. So you seek a master. Mordremoth is that master.
Canach: Is this a joke? My will has always been my own. I seek no master and never have. I am no one's servant.
Blighted Canach: Oh? Countess Anise would disagree. Accept the truth: Mordremoth needs servants, and you were born to serve.
Canach: No. To redeem myself, I choose to serve. As I choose to kill you now.

When Blighted Canach starts tossing grenades:

<Character name>: He won't let up. I need some cover!
Canach: Un—understood. Mordremoth's squeezing hard, but I won't break. Get behind me, Commander. I'll deflect the grenades.

During the second phase of the battle:

Canach: I can't...block the fire grenades...can't think. Is Mordremoth affecting me? Sorry, Commander. I'm doing my best.
If sylvari:
<Character name>: Still with us, Brother?
Otherwise:
<Character name>: Still with us, Canach?
Canach: It's too much...can't control myself...can't trust myself. Here: take my shield and finish him!

After defeating Blighted Canach:

If this is the first encounter:
Canach: Commander! Don't kill it—him. Mordremoth wants to negate me...wants me to negate myself. I'm done with that.
<Character name>: Look there—a rift opened. Maybe now we can break Mordremoth's illusion.
<Character name>: Let's widen the rift. The more we crack open this nightmare, the weaker Mordremoth becomes.
Otherwise:
Canach: I will never be you. And soon you won't be at all.
<Character name>: Hold on. I've seen this before. We need to open the rift to weaken Mordremoth's mind and disrupt its control.
Canach: Very well. But I've done my best to kill the old me. I remain ready to eliminate this version.

After using the Reality Rift on Blighted Canach:

Canach: I was strong enough to change what I was. I will be strong enough not to become...that.
If this is the first encounter:
Canach: Thank you for trusting my strength, Commander. And for lending me yours.
Otherwise:

My story[edit]

My allies and I found Marshal Trahearne and, with his help, entered Mordremoth's mind for a final confrontation. The Jungle Dragon's mental and magical defenses were formidable, but we prevailed. Defeated, Mordremoth survived inside Trahearne, and there was no way to finish off the dragon without also killing the marshal. At his urging and with great regret, I ended Trahearne's life and destroyed Mordremoth once and for all. The dragon's death sent an enormous wave of magical energy across the entire jungle; it remains to be seen what effect this wave will have on the region, and the entire world.

My story

Notes[edit]

  • After the fight with Eir, she might continue to attack preventing the opening of the rift.
  • Sometimes Canach will not use or drop his shield during the Blighted Canach fight. When this happens, Blighted Canach can become permanently invulnerable at 25% of its life if you do not break his breakbar. After killing Blighted Canach, Canach may still continue shielding indefinitely and this will prevent you from progressing any further. In this case you must restart the instance by logging out and back in.
  • Sometimes when you restart the fight with Mordremoth part of the platform will not return, resulting in Reality Rifts being inaccessible. As of 26 November 2015, if you die during the phase where you are supposed to fly, the area-wide attack animation still persists after you respawn, and at the end of the animation part of the arena will break off, including the floor. If you are waiting at the spawn point when this happens, the arena will be restored immediately; the bug happens only if you return to the fight right after you respawn. In this case the arena part still breaks off at the end of the animation while you are in the fight and the arena is not restored after that. The rift is open in the air where the floor used to be. It is inaccessible and the fight has to be restarted.
  • Sometimes your glider will refuse to deploy.
  • Sometimes the updrafts will fail to spawn or will spawn but will be invisible or will launch you up and out of the instance.
  • There are some invisible walls beneath the platform you can fall behind, preventing you from falling to your death, getting back up, or being attacked by Mordremoth.
  • Sometimes the Blighted bosses will disappear once defeated, preventing progress.
  • Sometimes the Reality Rifts will not pull the blighted bosses in when activated, preventing progress.
  • In the final phase of the fight, sometimes Mordremoth's defiance bar wont be broken after activating the rift and a new rift will not appear. If that happens he is immune to all attacks, but the bar can now be broken using crowd control skills such as Knockback or Chill.
Using /stuck as a result will send you back to the start of the instance and doesn't provide any way to get back in the fight.
  • If you have left the staging area after Bitter Harvest, you need to talk to Agent Zrii to be able to continue.
  • When assisting your companions, you will assist them in the order Braham → Canach → Caithe (obviously skipping the one that you didn't bring).
  • Players will receive an in game mail from Warden Leide upon completion of this mission, concluding the story arc.
