Skin of Main Page

Hi, I'm working on some wikis and I have some questions to you.
I was created Polish Main Page to ArcheAge wiki, based on ArcheAge German wiki with small changes to news (like on your wiki).
And here is my questions:

  • this skin is your or German ArcheAge wiki?
  • can I using this skin here or not? If not, what I must change?

Greetings, Rycerzodie (talk) 19:40, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Its not copyrightable and so you can use it however you wish to, but ArcheAge wiki has only been around since feb 2013 - we had it back in june 2012 onwards. (lol copying the filenames of alfa-r's background)
you can use it wherever you like (added: provided you provide attribution), but I expect that you'd have to copy bits from the css stylesheet (mediawiki:Common.css) -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 19:50, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
I'd say based on this edit that they used our main page as a starting point of their's. The biggest thing about copying from here is that it needs to conform to the GNU Free Documentation License. --JonTheMon (talk) 20:16, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
Chieftain Alex, now Curse member working about images on back and just added classes of skin from my own css. So I must only add info in mediawiki:Common.css like this "This skin was created by Guild Wars 2 wiki"? Rycerzodie (talk) 20:40, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
Unfortunately, you cannot use our Main Page design at all. The Gamepedia wikis are CC-BY-NC-SA licensed, and that is wholly incompatible with our GFDL license. I'm sorry, but you will have to redesign your main page. Felix Omni Signature.png 21:07, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
I’m afraid, that's correct. Our license, the GFDL, requires not only attributions (which would be a list of authors and a back link) but also requires derivative work to be licensed under the same license. So if you are not using GFDL yourself, you cannot fulfill that second part. The only possibility for you would be if the things you take are that minor that copyrights couldn’t be applied. In the case of the ArcheAge wiki this is unfortunately not possible given that they copied our main page as a whole before. poke | talk 21:13, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

This can look like this (normal wikitable and 2 or 3 style in page [not identical], and other class name)? Or it must have other layout too? --Rycerzodie (talk) 10:43, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Interwiki links in the recent changes?

Would it be possible to add interwikis to the recent changes like we already did in the german wiki? This would make the life of international wiki users who camp on the recent changes all day soo much easier. --Smiley™ de: user | talk 11:20, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Seems reasonable to me. --JonTheMon (talk) 11:42, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Already done, Ish ;) Thanks, Jon! --Smiley™ de: user | talk 12:31, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned files

Hello, I'm slowly processing the files linked from [[Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Projects/Orphaned files/list/weapons#Files to delete]] - these are unused and have been carefully checked + confirmed that they are redundant. I am loathe to go and individually tag each file since I'll end up visiting ~120 pages + typing out the reason, and then revisiting the files to delete them 3 days later. Do you think it would be alright if I just deleted said files (without waiting 3 days)? -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 16:39, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

The Wikis and HTTPS

Would it be possible to let the Wikis support both, HTTP and HTTPS? According to Dagger it could be done by simply changing $wgServer from http://wiki.guildwars2.com to //wiki.guildwars2.com to circumvent mixed-content blocking (which currently blocks some stylesheets and scripts). Thing is, this would eventually require someone at Arenanet to do this. (See also Cliff's statement on HTTPS) --Smiley™ de: user | talk 11:59, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

You should probably address that question to Stephane. I don't know much about the difference, but I can't think why having both available would be a bad thing. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 12:16, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Yea, asking Stéphane was my first intention but: "<Dagger> it'll have to go through Stephane eventually, but I guess it'd be more likely to happen if the request goes via an admin" so i asked here in first place ;) --Smiley™ de: user | talk 12:58, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Hey, this is possible but would require more work than what you said. It's already on our todo list but I'm not sure when we'll be able to go through it. Apart from the obvious security implication, would this be needed for something else? Thanks. --Stephane Lo Presti talk 16:53, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply, Stéphane. There's actually no specific reason except for the "better feeling", we had this topic in IRC this morning and i wondered why the wikis still don't support HTTPS properly (they actually do but some assets are blocked due to mixed-content policy). Just dropping the http: from $wgServer would be helpful at this point. It won't break anything for non-https connections but would allow browsers to load the assets via https if wanted by the user. I'm aware that there may be more changes to fully support and run the wikis 100% on https but this little change would be a start. --Smiley™ de: user | talk 19:00, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
"<stephane> Oh yeah sorry I didn't announce the fixing https publicly" - it seems HTTPS works now properly across all wikis. The only thing left to do is to fix the interwiki settings for de, es and fr (either drop the scheme or set it to https) and maybe fix some URLs in scripts/styles. Thanks everyone making this possible! :) --Smiley™ de: user | talk 15:51, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Restoration of deleted page requested.

There was a deletion of {{Release_table_row.image}} I think it broke {{temporary}} is there any way that you can restore it. It was deleted on 20:16, 28 May 2014. It looks like it was deleted due to it was using DPL. However we are not setup on the release pages for SMW can we get it restored until the proper things for SMW are in place on the release pages. Anzenketh (talk) 07:51, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

derp. Added a hidden include to {{temporary}} so that it doesn't appear to be unused. (also categorized so it doesn't look like a dead end template) -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 09:10, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Switching image files

File:Biography Conqueror's Pauldrons.png and File:Biography Fanatic's Pauldrons.png (now moved to "File:Biography Conqueror's Pauldrons2.png" should be switched. I tried to do this but when moving Fanatic to Conqueror2 it would not let me move Conqueror to Fanatic because the page still existed as a redirect. Tharkon (talk) 22:27, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Extra info to make sure things go right, I verified this ingame: The Fanatic's Pauldrons are the ones with the Guardian symbol on the shoulders. Tharkon (talk) 22:28, 17 July 2014 (UTC)
Done. Thanks for the clarification, it would have been unclear which was supposed to be where otherwise ^^ -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 22:38, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Fixing Case sensitivity

As it stands the wiki requires search queries to be case sensitive leading to some pages not correctly appearing when searched. This can be remedied as shown here and the patch is here, it's not a major issue but it can still screw up results so I figured that I'd submit a request (Mainly on the behalf of Binary_Llama on irc).

Suggested Change: Adding "Skin Name" to Weapon/Armor Template

I was looking for a templates or discussion page to post this in, but couldn't really find any, so I figured this would be the best place to put it for now.

I want to suggest changing the template for weapons and armor to add in which skin each one unlocks in the wardrobe. This way, for people looking for a specific skin, the name exists on the wiki (as, in many cases, they actually don't when the skin name is drastically different from the name of pieces of gear that unlock it), and they would easily be able to find where/how they can get the skin to unlock it.

Now, obviously I know this isn't going to be an overnight change, but it's something I would like to work on with permission from the administrators.

Daft inquisitor (talk) 23:11, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

After a couple days of deliberation, I've begun adding the "Skins" category to armor pieces. I've seen that a few other people have done it before on some random pieces of gear, but didn't note exactly which ones.
If anyone would like to make a proper skin template (or refer me to one that already exists), that would be great, because mine is kind of awful. I've already started with the Primitive armor set.
Daft inquisitor (talk) 22:21, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
Apologies I was out when you posted the first time (seafood >_>) We do have a bunch of skin templates; {{skin infobox}} and {{skin list}}.
I've edited the Primitive Cowl to use these. We're discussing the documentation over at Guild_Wars_2_Wiki_talk:Community_portal#Documenting_skins_-_in_their_own_namespace - we can pretty much automate the setup of every skin page... we just need to browbeat others agree on where to put the data. Feel free to comment on that thread too. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 22:25, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
side note: the skin parameter already existed in back item/armor/weapon infoboxes, and if the icon name matches the pagename, then you don't generally have to put the icon parameter for the infobox in. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 22:27, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
I saw the few pages I made had been updated. I'll use the new template from now on, thanks. Daft inquisitor (talk) 22:55, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Sudden death of my husband one of your frequent players

Hi all,

My name is Laura and I know very little about Guild Wars but my husband (I don't know of any of his gaming names or identities but if any of you knew him as Al/Alan that was his first name) he was a daily player on Guild Wars 2 and for lots of hours every day. I don't know how many players will know of him, or be aware of his character? not being around since Monday early hours but unfortunately he has died shortly after he came to bed on the Monday morning. He loved playing Guild Wars and must have enjoyed the time with you all. I don't know of any log in details or account details of his as online gaming was something I didn't understand, it was "his thing" and I had my interests. I just know that he would have, if he could have "known he was going to die" have left you all a message to say he would never be back to play with you guys again and in respect to his memory, I'm trying to find a way to let you know in place of him.

Laura.

If you haven't already done so, you should post this to the GW2 reddit - use the "Submit new content" link in the top right. (Creating a reddit account is free if you don't already have one.) You'll reach a lot more players there who might have known your husband. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 03:25, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
I'm incredibly sorry to hear of your loss. Dr ishmael's suggestion is a great one, and I'd like to add that you may be able to reach out to ArenaNet to see if they can help you (they are the company that runs Guild Wars 2). If you happen to know an email address which your husband may have used, they might be able to respond to you with more details about his account.
I'll break down the steps you can take (and others can modify my words if I've made any mistakes):
  • Click on this link which will take you to the Guild Wars 2 support page.
  • In the top right corner, click on the link that says, "Submit a request"
  • In the drop-down menu, choose "Account Issue"
  • Your email address * - Enter your email address that they'll respond to you at.
  • Subject * - A suitable subject line.
  • Description of Issue * - This is where you can explain the situation, as well as list any possible email accounts your husband may have used to access Guild Wars 2.
  • Specific Issue * - I would suggest leaving this as "no selection"
  • The remaining fields - If you are able to provide any information that can help them verify your husbands account, it would be appreciated. As you pointed out, you don't know all of his details, but that's okay.
After you press submit, you should receive an email from ArenaNet confirming that they've started a ticket for you. If you do not see it in your inbox, make sure you check your spam/junk folders. It may be that your husband used a unique email account to access his game, in which case ArenaNet may be at a loss, but it is always worth a shot.
Again, incredibly sorry for your loss. Guild Wars has an amazing community, and I'm sure your husband touch a lot of other people's lives. G R E E N E R 05:39, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
I'm sincerely sorry for your loss... I hope you can let his friends know about this. May God warm your heart. – Valento msg 12:07, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

Changing username

Is there a process in place for changing one's wiki username, something along the lines of w:Wikipedia:Changing_username? I registered this username a long time ago and would like to change it to match my GW2 account name. JD (gameboyguy13) (talk) 23:14, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Requests for user merge - Tanetris (talk) 23:33, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
To use that page, it looks like I have to create a new account with the desired username, and it's a merge instead of a rename. Is it policy to not use Special:RenameUser on this wiki? JD (gameboyguy13) (talk) 01:14, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
The user merge policy has been in place since before RenameUser was a thing; now that we have access to that I see no reason not to use it. - Felix Omni 01:25, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Request for sysop rights on my bot

moved from Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Bureaucrat noticeboard

Per Guild Wars 2 Wiki talk:Bots#Request for sysop user rights on User:AWB Alex, I'd like admin rights on my robot so that I can cleanup (i.e. delete) armor gallery file redirects.

Apologies for creating this page, but bluntly I hate choosing one of your two user talk pages to post on... it always feel like I've got to show my favouritism. >.> -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:18, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

I'm going to grant this request, but I want to make clear that it is not to shift general deletion sprees to the bot account. Something like this where it's a big batch of deletions that are all essentially a single task, sure, but not for e.g. clearing out the candidates for deletion, even if candidates for deletion has gotten big. There's a reason deletions are a part of RC, and I don't want you using the bot for deletions by default. Make sense? - Tanetris (talk) 23:27, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
Logging into my bot account is a complete bitch anyway because I keep AWB on a USB stick at the back of my cupboard - there is no way that using my bot to clear CFDs would be fun or easier... -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 23:30, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
May I ask then why you are even doing this? You could have published that list and asked someone else to do it ;P That being said, where do those unused files actually come from?
Btw. it’s somewhat funny how ridiculously simple it has become to get sysop rights on a bot accountpoke | talk 07:16, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
That you had to ask in the first place on GWW is ridiculous, given you were already an admin + the damage you could cause with that account alone.
That I had to even ask for admin rights on my bot, when I already had an admin account, and yourself + dr ishmael were assigned both userrights to your bots without a glance I find insulting. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 08:14, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
GW2W-Wikichu was readily sysopped as basically a grandfathering (even if it was technically 2 years late). Ish's bot was sysopped when first made because the initial task that spurred its creation was a sysop-requiring task, plus similar to Poke he'd already been running a sysop bot on GuildWiki for years at that point, and even then I did make him wait about a day to leave room for objections. - Tanetris (talk) 15:34, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Heads up on incoming large volume redirect + image deletion relating to armor gallery project

Context: User talk:Chieftain Alex#Armor gallery formatting help

Evening. Just to let you guys know, I'm planning on 3 or so deletion batches involving the following:

  • deleting all of the file to file (non-user) redirects sitting on the left hand side of User:Chieftain Alex/sandbox5 (from special:listredirects, offset ~8500) [57 redirects]
  • possibly deleting all of the armor gallery files for asura + charr labelled as "both" - Ventriloquist is uploading split male/female images from the german wiki (excellent quality) [795 defunct images]
  • possibly deleting the armor gallery images labelled left/right [1489 defunct images].
  • additionally, any dead/double redirects these deletions produce, or even older badly named and orphaned versions of armor gallery images I find lying around in the process...

I expect the first is non-controversial. For the second/third bullets I am less confident, but I don't see a place for the low quality images that won't have matching front/back images. I'd be doing this next weekend (28th Feb). -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 00:00, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Redirects nuked. Some unused armor images nuked. Charr both images have been ignored for the moment pending upload of better images to gw2w:de. Oh lord - this is the first instance I've seen of a genuine user getting abuse filtered. See, the majority of spambots create an account then unload their crap on their new talk page. Most genuine users don't do that, only using their talk page when there's something to reply to. Please apologise to your friend and reassure them that they've done absolutely nothing wrong, just an unfortunate sequence of events that tripped the safeguards. Requesting temp semi-protection on Urban Battlegrounds Fractal

An ip, user from Reddit, is continuously reverting to an improper formatted and overall false description of the aforementioned article. As I tried explaining in an edit summary, the ip's changes are incorrect because:

  • The ip claims the fractal represents the charr breaching the wall. Linked interview and non-linked interviews state it is a version of the Searing, which happens before any breaching of the Wall (the Searing appears to be the large energy reading mentioned in the Fractal). Furthermore, the fractal does not feature the Great Northern Wall being mentioned by the up.
  • The ip is removing said interview reference.
  • The ip is capitalizing charr, race names are lowercased.
  • The ip is removing links.
  • The ip is mentioning The Breach, often as a GW1 mission - in GW1, gw1:The Breach was an explorable area that does not even feature a city like the fractal does. Closest equivalent is Piken Square, which is definitely not what the fractal is about.

Not really sure this is the appropriate place for such a request but not sure where else to put it. I've also tried rewording the original statement to be less confusing, as per reddit people seem to think that "alternate version" means solely "alternate dimension" (the up is included in those who claim the original wording talked about alternate dimensions/realities). Hopefully the ip will not change it again. I'm doubtful. Konig 20:25, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Suggestion: Heart of Thorns Updates tags/markers/lists

As you know, HoT brought sweeping changes to the game. This leaves many (how many? lots!) of wiki pages out of date. Here's the problem: Right now a player has no way to know which pages have accurate or inaccurate information. Updated pages are mixed with old, now wrong pages. Misinformation is everywhere and it is all indistinguishable unless you are already a subject expert on the particular page topic.

May I suggest adding some systematic/widespread method or tag to tell if particular pages have or have not been updated for heart of thorns? I imagine there could be many ways to implement this.

Ideas: Tags (graphic or text) for "Needs HoT update" and "Updated for HoT". A wiki page that links to all pages that are marked "Needs HoT update" or "Updated for HoT". Possibly apply the "Needs HoT update" tag on a mass scale to all current pages, (or all pages above a certain size?), until each one can be glanced at to see if it is still correct?

I don't know the best way to solve this problem, so my main intention with this message was to define/highlight the problem for you and see if you have thoughts on it.

If you see a page that is out-of-date, tag it with {{out of date|<reason>}}, where <reason> would be something like "major changes in Heart of Thorns." —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:31, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

Looks like her account's not old enough to be autoconfirmed - once she's been registered for 24 hours, the filters will ignore her.
