Ewyn is a charr from the Olmakhan tribe who lives as a hermit in Ewyn's Retreat with rabbits. He feels guilty for losing his adventuring companions, and has become hardened as a result. He often meditates and converses with the ghosts of his friends at night.

Biography

Early years

Ewyn grew up in Atholma among other Olmakhan charr. He and Siriol dreamed of a life beyond the village and embarked on a journey through Elona and the Crystal Desert to see the world once they came of age. As they interacted with humans, they were careful never to say anything about their home to anyone, including their friends, in order to keep the location and existence of Atholma secret.

While staying in the Free City of Amnoon, the pair ended up working in Master Chef Laraib's kitchen and inspired him with their charr cooking. The grateful master chef awarded them with a bottle of his secret sauce before they departed to the dunes.

During their travels they came across a human, Raast, who tagged along and led them on a mission to deliver a local boy's drawing to the boy's Awakened ancestor, Wurmmarshal Osa Ekolo, on a dangerous trek through Palawa Joko's kingdom. The trio were ambushed by the Awakened they had been looking for and, after convincing Ekolo that they had not come to kill her on behalf of the Mordant Crescent, they presented the drawing to her and explained who it was from. Ekolo gifted the trio with daggers in exchange for their kind gesture.

They met with another human, Zephra, among a local ogre community. She warned them about the threat the Branded posed in the region before joining the group on their journey. Sometime later, another adventurer named Lola approached them and asked for their help in exploring Forgotten ruins. The group agreed and came across desert bandits while there, learning that the bandits had been responsible for killing Lola's father. Siriol managed to stop Lola from exacting revenge and convinced her to find peace via other means.

The group continued traveling around Elona and the desert, offering their assistance to those in need whenever they could. While in the Domain of Vabbi, they took on a bounty for a bloodthirsty sand shark called Kharkaris. However, they were ambushed by the predator while looking for it, and Ewyn ran away in the resulting chaos, expecting his companions to follow him. When he noticed he had not been followed, he returned only to see that his friends had been devoured by Kharkaris.

Horrified and saddened by the deaths of his friends and blaming himself for their fates, Ewyn returned to Atholma as a changed charr. No longer jovial, he chose the life of a broody hermit away from the village in the nearby Hunting Grounds with rabbits as his only company. He built memorial mounds for his fallen friends, meditated on his life at night, and was sometimes visited by his friends' ghosts whose presence only made him grieve them and blame himself even more. The cub Efi and her mother visited Ewyn every now and then, bringing him food and singing traditional songs in an attempt to cheer him up but in vain.

Living World Season 4

Following the Inquest's raids which had claimed the lives of many Olmakhan in 1331 AE, the Pact Commander visited Ewyn at his retreat. The Commander informed him about the deaths of Efi's parents while trying to inquire more about the enigmatic hermit. Although Ewyn was reluctant to speak with the Commander at first, he relented when the Commander showed genuine concern, interest and respect for the fallen.

Ewyn retold the adventures of his band, and the Commander got to witness the ghosts of Ewyn's friends speaking with him and Ewyn trying to come to terms with his sense of guilt and the forgiving and consoling words of the ghosts. Gradually over the course of various conversations with the ghosts and the Commander, Ewyn softened up somewhat. He offered some words of wisdom that the Commander could deliver to Efi to console the cub about her loss in exchange for the kindness she and her mother had shown the hermit before the Inquest's raid. While Ewyn's advice was for Efi to learn how to defend herself now that the outside world had found Atholma, the Commander decided to alter the hermit's message by suggesting that Efi's mother would have wanted the cub to sing songs to cheer up others instead just like the cub's earlier acts of kindness had affected Ewyn.

Since we were cubs, Siriol and I dreamed of a life beyond the village. My head was always in the clouds, but her eyes were always on the horizon. We promised each other we'd see the world together.

The two of you left the Olmakhan community?

When we came of age, we headed into the desert—and the world of humans. We met the best and the worst of them, got into and out of so much trouble...

Didn't you two worry the wrong people might learn where you came from?

We were careful never to say anything about our home, not even to our friends. The Olmakhan came to the Sandswept Isles to be alone with nature, and we honored and respected that, always.

Not many humans would have joined two charr wandering the desert far from home, but Raast didn't think twice.

What's the story behind that banner honoring Joko?

We met an Elonian boy who hero-worshiped his Awakened ancestor. He asked us to deliver a drawing to her, and Raast agreed. That banner let us travel through the kingdom safely.

Did you ever find that boy's Awakened family member?

We'd nearly given up on finding her when she ambushed us with giant wurms. Turned out she was afraid the Mordant Crescent had sent us to kill her. Joko's kingdom makes even the undead humans crazy...

So were you able to give her the drawing from her descendant?

Yes, and she was surprisingly grateful. Gave us some daggers to show her appreciation. Raast said those daggers were proof that even the Awakened have hearts that can be warmed.

That's true. Siriol and I were glad to have humans to escort us, so far from home. Of course, we were careful to never betray where we'd come from. Even Raast never knew—in life, at least.

Zephra. She spent years living with a community of ogres before joining us. I think she never really felt at home among her own kind. She had a big heart and loved every animal she ever met.

Ogres are devoted to their pets, and their community.

Zephra was the first to warn us about the dragon minion threat. Her ogre family had been driven south from Ascalon by Kralkatorrik when it Branded most of their tribe around ten years ago.

She thought of those ogres as her family?

Ogre, human, charr—Zephra didn't care who or what you were. Her family was her family. Before she left their krall[sic], her ogre sister gave her that skimmer kite. Heh. She sure loved that thing...

Siriol and I found Raast and Zephra. But Lola, she found us—with a job.

What sort of a job?

Said she needed help exploring some Forgotten ruins. When we got there, we met a gang of bandits. They'd killed Lola's father for his map of the place, and she wanted our help getting revenge.

Did you really help her exact vengeance?

No. Siriol stayed her hand, promised Lola we'd help her find peace another way. Poor Lola. Her father was her family, her anchor. Without him, she was adrift on the wind—like all of us.
