The Desolation is a harsh landscape that is the central home for Palawa Joko and his forces. Once plentiful and luscious land, it had suffered cataclysmic changes centuries ago during the war between rebel god Abaddon and other gods. The Mouth of Torment now forever scars the place of the disastrous events, connecting Tyria with the Realm of Torment.

In the past two centuries since Joko has conquered Elona, the Elon River had been diverted, flooding the northern section of the Desolation, and The Bone Wall erected to mark the northern border of Joko's domain. The Bone Palace, the residence of the undead king, stands in the south.

The Desolation is an nigh-inhospitable place for mortals, which made it the ideal staging ground for Joko's invasion of Elona. For any Elonian seeking to defect north, the sulfurous sands and hordes of Awakened that patrol the land are lethal obstacles.

History[edit]

Before the Exodus of the Gods, the lands that make up the Desolation were considered a lush and beautiful landscape,[1][2] and was home to the Forgotten's empire.[3] When Abaddon rebelled against the other Six Gods and laid siege to the Gates of Heaven, the war raged across the shores and islands of the Crystal Sea, and where Abaddon was struck down became a crater called the Ruptured Heart.[4][5] Abaddon's defeat altered the landscape and created a tear in reality, connecting the land to the Realm of Torment that is the Mouth of Torment. From the Mouth of Torment, the influence of Abaddon and the Realm of Torment slowly seeped into the world, poisoning and warping the landscape into the sulfurous wasteland it is today.

In the decades following this, the Primeval Kings spread their reign further north, settling Vabbi and the Desolation, establishing the Dynastic Tombs and reaching further north into the Crystal Desert in 29 AE.[6] They had also established Morah as a guard over the Mouth of Torment. However, due to Abaddon's spreading influence through the Mouth of Torment, Morah succumbed and fell nearly two hundred years later.

At some point, Sahlahja was established in the Desolation as well, being ruled by its own king during the Shattered Dynasty. It too eventually fell to the spread of the sulfurous haze as well as to Palawa Joko when he first attempted to conquer Elona.[7] Since Joko's appearance and building of the Bone Palace, the only settlements that was able to be founded was Lannur, which Turai Ossa had established before moving his doomed Great Pilgrimage further north into the Crystal Desert. After this, the sulfurous sands became too deadly for mortals to cross into the land.

In 1075 AE, Abaddon's Margonite forces mustered in the Desolation and the landscape was transformed by countless tendrils that mimicked the hair of Abaddon's mask. After being freed, Palawa Joko assisted the Order of the Sunspears in crossing the Desolation in return for their help in reclaiming his throne and a number of his forces. With Abaddon's death that year, the sulfurous sands began to recede slowly, making the Desolation more hospitable over time.[8] With Palawa Joko's second conquest of Elona, he had established new settlements in edges of the Desolation, the most prominent of which being Purity, which became one of Vabbi's largest source of farmed food. In the years of Joko's reign, the Order of Shadows splintered from the Order of Whispers and established the Chantry of Shadows overlooking both the Mouth of Torment and the Bone Palace.[9]

Priest Kehmtut: To finish this business, you will need firepower like you have never wielded before. The force you just defeated is nothing compared to what now rises in the Alkali Pan. To reach Varesh, you must face the Horde of Darkness...the very Margonites who fought the gods when Abaddon stormed the gates of heaven.

Sahlahjar the Dead: I too made an unfortunate deal with Palawa Joko. I was a prince and, until my father died, had lived a life full of honor and the trappings of royalty, but free of duty. Running the kingdom was more than I could handle. With my people soon to feel the brunt of Palawa's attack, I made a deal with him: I would serve him if he would spare my people. Unfortunately, it cost me my everlasting soul, for he killed my people and made me his undying minion.
