Walkthrough[edit]

As you approach Occam's house you notice Caithe. On speaking to her she mentions that she had heard about an attack on Brigid's Overlook and that she had decided to investigate.

You inform Caithe that it appears that Occam has forged a set of magic armour for Bercilak and that you believe it is the reason he cannot be killed.

Caithe tells you that she has found signs of a struggle but no blood and that she believes that Occam has been kidnapped. She asks you to look around in a search for more clues that may reveal what has happened.

After you examine some objects, Caithe hears someone approaching and tells you to hide to see who is is. Courtier Elisaid and two Nightmare Court Guards approach and from their conversation it appears that they have been sent to recover Occam's tools.

After defeating Courtier Elisaid she tells you that Duchess Faolain had commissioned Occam to make Bercilak's magic armour. She was that impressed she sent members of the Court to visit Occam and "invite" him to join her Court.

Caithe then kills Courtier Elisaid.

Now you must choose your next mission: Hammer and Steel (choose to rescue Occam) or Weakness of the Heart (choose to talk to Gairwen).

Dialogue[edit]

Upon arrival at Occam's home (cinematic):

Caithe: Valiant? How unexpected. Nightmare courtiers attacked Brigid's Overlook. I came to investigate. What are you doing here?
<Character name>: I came to see Occam, but he's not here. He forged special armor for Bercilak. It may be the reason he's so powerful.
Caithe: I see signs of a fight...but no blood upon the ground. This smith was kidnapped, not killed.
<Character name>: Whoever attacked this village must have gotten to Occam. I hope he's all right.
Caithe: We can still learn a great deal. Look for clues. There may be more here than a first glance reveals.

After the cinematic:

Caithe: Search carefully. The smith may have kept a journal or an account book. We need any information we can find.

Speaking with Caithe:

Caithe: Keep your eyes open. We need to find out what happened.
Talk more option tango.png This is Occam's house, isn't it? I was told I'd find the smith here.
It is, and we should—but I see no sign of the blacksmith. Perhaps he was injured in the attack on Brigid's Overlook.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png I'll search the house and grounds.
Talk more option tango.png What do you know about the attack at Brigid's Overlook?
It was a bold one, that's certain. Keep your wits about you. Nightmare Court may still be in the area.
Talk more option tango.png Can you tell me more about the Nightmare Court?
Sylvari who have turned their back on the Pale Tree and Ventari's tablet. They are evil, Valiant, make no mistake.
Talk back option tango.png Got it. Now I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png I'll keep that in mind.
Talk end option tango.png Good advice. I'll do that.
Talk end option tango.png I'll search carefully.

Interacting with the various objects:

Crafting Supplies: Various armorsmithing supplies in a state of disarray.
Talk end option tango.png Nothing interesting here.
Smithing Hammer: A human-made smithing hammer.
Talk end option tango.png Nothing interesting here.
Well-loved Smithing Hammer: This hammer was hurriedly hidden. The handle is worn and well-loved from long use.
Talk end option tango.png Curiouser and curiouser.
Journal: Occam's journal describes the green armor's enchantments, and says that they only work if the entire suit is worn.
Talk quest option tango.png I should tell Caithe about this.
Blueprints: Blueprints for a magical suit of armor. The smith notes that it required unique components and was hard to make. It is truly one of a kind.
Talk quest option tango.png Caithe will want to know about this.
Book: The smithy account book. There's an entry for Duchess Faolain commissioning a suit of green armor, marked "payment pending".
Talk quest option tango.png I should tell Caithe about this.

Upon informing Caithe of the blueprints:

Caithe: The notes say the armor Bercilak wears is the only set Occam crafted. Good.

Upon informing Caithe of the journal:

Caithe: Look. Occam's journal says the enchantment on the green armor works only if the entire suit is worn.

Upon informing Caithe of the account book:

Caithe: Occam's account book. The armor was commissioned by—ah. It was commissioned by Faolain.
Caithe: This journal says the sale was never finalized. The court must have stolen the armor rather than giving the smith payment.

Speaking with Caithe after all three pieces of evidence have been gathered:

Caithe: If Faolain commissioned this armor, then Bercilak is a member of the Nightmare court. He—listen. I hear footsteps. Someone approaches.
Caithe: Hide yourself a moment, and let us see what we will see.
Nightmare Courtier: Bah! That sniveling smith refuses to work without his own tools.
Courtier Elisaid: Don't waste time complaining. If we don't return soon, the duchess will flay us and make a winter cloak.
Courtier Elisaid: Hurry up, you wretches! Collect the tools, and we're away.
Caithe: Shh. Do you hear that? Someone is coming.

Speaking with Caithe before the courtiers arrive:

Caithe: Keep still and stay hidden as long as you can. Hopefully, they'll reveal their purpose.
Talk end option tango.png Understood.

Upon confronting the courtiers:

Courtier Elisaid: It's Caithe! Catch her, and we'll earn title in the court.

Upon defeating the other courtiers (cinematic):

Courtier Elisaid: Well, look at this. You're Caithe—you're the one Duchess Faolain talks about! She'll be delighted to hear you're still alive.
Caithe: Speak her name again, and I'll cut it from your tongue. Now, tell me where they've taken the smith.
Courtier Elisaid: The duchess commissioned a suit of enchanted armor from Occam. She wanted it for Bercilak, our newest knight.
Courtier Elisaid: The armor was so magnificent that Her Grace ordered us to come back here and "invite" the smith to join her court.
<Character name>: An invitation he undoubtedly wasn't allowed to refuse. Caithe, we have to rescue Occam. He made the armor; he'll know how to destroy it.
Caithe: True. Still, if he has fallen to Nightmare, he can't be turned back to the Dream. You've mentioned a girl named Gairwen—could she help us, instead?
<Character name>: Hm, it's possible. Bercilak desires Gairwen's favor. She could persuade him to remove his helmet—and the protection it provides. But she's still grieving for her lost love.
Caithe: Maybe a taste of revenge will cure her grief. Maybe it won't. Does it matter, as long as we stop Bercilak? We shall go to either Gairwen or Occam. The choice is yours.

Speaking to Caithe after the cinematic:

Caithe: The Nightmare court was behind the creation of Bercilak's armor. We must act, before he kills again.
Talk quest option tango.png Do you see any options?
We could try to rescue Occam, but it may be too late. Or we could use Gairwen to bait a Bercilak-trap.
Talk quest option tango.png I'm ready to decide.
Very well. Which will it be: rescue Occam or convince Gairwen?
Talk quest choice tango.png We'll rescue Occam and strike the Nightmare Court head-on.
As you wish. I hope he has not yet turned to Nightmare. Meet me at Sandycove Beach.
Talk quest option tango.png I'll meet you there.
Talk quest choice tango.png We'll talk with Gairwen and devise a trap for Bercilak.
Bercilak wishes to steal Gairwen's heart, but he will find a knife in his own. Meet me at Morgan's Spiral.
Talk quest option tango.png I'll meet you there.
Talk back option tango.png I have more questions first.
Talk end option tango.png I need more time to think.
Talk more option tango.png If we go after Occam, is there any hope he's alive?
I know him by reputation. Brilliant, quiet, prefers a solitary life. He may be strong enough to resist—for a little while.
Talk back option tango.png Hm. Good to know. What are our options again?
Talk end option tango.png I need more time to think.
Talk more option tango.png Gairwen might help us, but how do we persuade her?
Difficult to say. Matters of the heart are...never certain. Still, if Bercilak is a member of the court, Gairwen in in great danger.
Talk back option tango.png Hm. Good point. What are our options again?
Talk end option tango.png I need more time to decide.
Talk end option tango.png I'm still not sure. Give me a few minutes to think.
Talk end option tango.png I need more time to decide.

Speaking to Caithe after deciding:

If decided to rescue Occam:
Caithe: The court's likely taken him to their camp in Dolorous Vale. Meet me there.
Talk end option tango.png I'll be there, Caithe.
If decided to persuade Gairwen:
Caithe: We need to go to Morgan's Spiral and persuade Gairwen to help. I'll meet you there.
Talk end option tango.png I'm on my way. Travel safely.

My story[edit]

A Good Work Spoiled.jpg

On Gairwen's advice, I sought out the smith that created Bercilak's green armor. To my surprise, he's been kidnapped by the Nightmare Court!

My story

Trivia[edit]

  • It is possible to kill the courtiers before they have started speaking about their plans. In this case, Elisaid will not become invulnerable and allow for dialogue; the event log will not continue on to "Defeat the intruders", but get stuck at "Discuss the evidence with Caithe"; and the story cannot be continued. The only way to continue is to restart this instance and allow the courtiers to speak first, which triggers the next step, "Defeat the intruders", in the event log.
  • It is possible to keep Courtier Elisaid alive by interacting with Caithe before she would kill her; this does not have any consequences. Elisaid remains seated on the ground.
  • Interacting with Courtier Elisaid after keeping her alive, gives her greetings such as "Live well" and "Act with wisdom", which are normally reserved for sylvari who have not fallen to Nightmare.
