Walkthrough[edit]

After witnessing the meeting of Destiny's Edge in the previous story step, a letter arrives in your mail telling you to report to Fort Marriner, the Vigil's outpost in (a separate instance of) Lion's Arch. Once there, you will meet the head of the Vigil, General Almorra Soulkeeper. She assigns you to Warmaster Forgal and gives you your first mission - aiding Ebonhawke with their Separatist/Renegade problems to ensure the peace treaty between the Charr and the Humans goes smoothly. Travel first to Divinity's Reach via an asura gate, and then find the story instance marker in front of the other asura gate to Ebonhawke in the Rurikton Quarter.

As soon as you cross through to the other side, a cutscene triggers, and then fighting begins - apparently you arrived right in the middle of a Renegade attack. You will be tasked with recapturing certain key areas from the Renegades, and finally with securing the central market. Try to revive allies along the way if you have time; there are a lot of enemies so it can be easy to get overwhelmed. Once the market is captured, the mission is over.

Rendezvous at Vigil Keep

Recruit,

General Almorra Soulkeeper has issued orders to rendezvous at the Vigil Headquarters in Lion's Arch. There, I'll brief you on the directives for your first mission: assisting me with a difficulty at the fortress of Ebonhawke. The General's taken personal interest in you. I trust you'll live up to her expectations.

Welcome to the Vigil.

—Warmaster Forgal Kernsson

Fort Marriner[edit]

Approaching General Almorra Soulkeeper, a conversation between the Vigil and a Krytan ambassador (non-cinematic):

Ambassador Versa Elidor: Thank you for the warning, General Soulkeeper. I will make sure Queen Jennah receives your news, but I cannot make any promises.
Ambassador Versa Elidor: The Ebonhawke treaty is Kryta's only hope for peace with the charr. We cannot withdraw our negotiators, no matter the risk.
Warmaster Forgal Kernsson: With all due respect, Ambassador, that's a damn fool decision.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: That's enough, Warmaster.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: Thank you, Lady Versa. The Vigil will do our best to keep everyone safe.

Reporting to General Almorra Soulkeeper:

General Almorra Soulkeeper: Who might you be, soldier?
Talk quest option tango.png I'm <Character name>, ma'am, a new recruit reporting for duty.

Introduction to the Vigil (cutscene):

General Almorra Soulkeeper: Six years ago, a dragon rose in Ascalon.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: It flew south, killing and corrupting everything in its path.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: I stood beneath the dragon as it passed overhead. I survived where others did not.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: All across Tyria, I found others who told of destruction caused by the dragons.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: Humans and sylvari, battling undead that swarmed their shores.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: Asura, driven from their underground cities.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: Joining together, we gave birth to a mighty organization: the Vigil.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: We're proud that you have chosen to serve alongside us. Your mentor will be Forgal, one of our finest soldiers, and the most stalwart norn I know.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: He'll teach you to fight with the Vigil.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: The Vigil was created to fight the dragons. To destroy them before they destroy us.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: Some must fight, so that all may be free.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: Welcome to the Vigil.

Speaking to Almorra Soulkeeper (cinematic):

General Almorra Soulkeeper: My name is Almorra Soulkeeper. I founded this order. I'm its general, until I die in battle or they find someone better.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: Your representative sent me a letter saying that you were the best they'd ever seen. I look forward to seeing you prove that.
<Character name>: I'll do my best, General. I'm dedicated to fighting the dragons. Just show me where to fight.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: Ha! I like you already, Recruit. I've assigned you to Warmaster Forgal Kernsson for training.
Warmaster Forgal Kernsson: Look here, young one. I don't care what you've done in the past. The Vigil needs heroes, not tale-tellers.
Warmaster Forgal Kernsson: It's what you do today, not yesterday, that matters to me. Understood?
<Character name>: Yes, Warmaster!
General Almorra Soulkeeper: If you give each other a chance, I think you'll get along just fine.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: Now, to business. Renegades are threatening the treaty negotiations between Kryta and the Iron Legion.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: The Vigil needs to ensure that the treaty goes through. Those two nations need to be fighting the dragons, not each other.
General Almorra Soulkeeper: You'll be dealing with Commander Samuelsson, leader of the Ebon Vanguard and avid treaty supporter. Head to Ebonhawke, and stop those Renegades.

Upon talking to Almorra Soulkeeper:

General Almorra Soulkeeper: You'd do well to listen to Forgal. He's a wise old cuss, the best of us, and I have a great deal of respect for him.
Talk more option tango.png If you don't mind me asking, ma'am, what's Forgal's story?''
Many years ago in the norn lands, Jormag's minions slaughtered Forgal's family. He came to us to protect others from that fate... and to try and forget.
Talk end option tango.png That's a tragic story. Thank you for telling me, General.
Talk end option tango.png I'll pay attention, General. Thank you for the opportunity.

Upon talking to Forgal Kernsson:

Warmaster Forgal Kernsson: You seem mighty soft for the Vigil, Recruit. Still, if you're willing to work hard, you might pass muster.
Ferocity Don't worry, Warmaster. I want to fight, and I'm willing to prove myself.
Huh. You've got the right attitude, even if you are green. Keep your mind keen, and your eyes open.
Talk end option tango.png Sir, I will, sir!
Charisma Don't underestimate me. I'm worthy—you'll see.
Oh, you are, are you? I'll be the one to decide that, Recruit.
Talk end option tango.png Whatever you say, sir!
Talk end option tango.png Thank you, sir!

Ebonhawke[edit]

Arriving at Ebonhawke:

Commander Samuelsson: Secure the gate! Don't let the Renegades escape!

Talking to nearby NPCs:

Warmaster Forgal Kernsson: Stop babbling and start fighting. We've got work to do!
Talk end option tango.png Sir, yes sir!
Gate Assistant Feddr: The charr are everywhere! They're overwhelming the Vanguard!
Ferocity Are you cowards or soldiers? Fight!
You think you can do better? We'll show you!
Talk end option tango.png That's the spirit!
Dignity We're with the Vigil. We're here to help you!
The Vigil? Why didn't you say so? Hurrah, we've been reinforced!
Talk end option tango.png Ready your weapons. To battle!
Talk end option tango.png Don't give up!
Gate Operator Stebben: Look at this mess! Someone has to stop the charr before they burn the city down!
Charisma You've done well here, but it's time for the Vigil to take over. Take a breather.
That's kind of you, stranger. I will—but I'll be back in the fight in no time.
Talk end option tango.png We'll be there!
Dignity We'll stop the charr. You just worry about keeping this area clear.
Praise the Alchemy! We'll do our best.
Talk end option tango.png Off I go!
Talk end option tango.png I'm on it.

Report to Commander Samuelsson (cinematic):

Warmaster Forgal Kernsson: Welcome to Ebonhawke, Recruit. I—by Raven's wings! What in the Mists is happening here?
Commander Samuelsson: It's the Vigil! Thank Balthazar, you're just in time. I'm Samuelsson. Wade Samuelsson, Commander of Ascalon.
Warmaster Forgal Kernsson: I'm Warmaster Kernsson, and this is my new recruit. Give me a status report!
Commander Samuelsson: Here's the problem. A bunch of charr Renegades smuggled explosives into the city. They were trying to blow up one of the outer walls.
Commander Samuelsson: The Ebon Vanguard stopped the demolition team, but Renegade forces are attacking everywhere from here to the central plaza.
Warmaster Forgal Kernsson: That sounds like a blood-covered mess, Commander. How can we help?
Commander Samuelsson: We have to get to the city's central plaza. Turn right, head down the road and through the crossing. You'll see a big statue at the center of the square.
Commander Samuelsson: Once we take the square, the Vanguard can do the rest. But without a rallying point, we're falling apart.
<Character name>: Who are these Renegades? What do they want with Ebonhawke?
Commander Samuelsson: They're charr who disobeyed the orders of the High Legions. These idiots would rather die than make peace with humans, and they're dangerous.
Warmaster Forgal Kernsson: We'll capture the plaza, Commander, and teach a lesson to any Renegades we find along the way. Ready, Recruit? Move out!

After the cinematic:

Warmaster Forgal Kernsson: Ebonhawke, fall? The hell it will. The hell it will, while I'm here.

Talking to Samuelsson:

Commander Samuelsson: I'm at your service, <Character name>. We're grateful for all of your help here.
Talk more option tango.png I'm sorry, who are you again?
My name's Commander Samuelsson, and I am the Duke of Ebonhawke.
Talk back option tango.png May I ask you another question?
Talk end option tango.png Thanks for your time, Commander.
Talk more option tango.png By what authority do you rule this city?
My forefathers were kings of Ascalon, and I'll be damned if I let those renegades destroy their last legacy!
Talk back option tango.png May I ask you another question?
Talk end option tango.png Thanks for your time, Commander.
Talk more option tango.png Who are the Ebon Vanguard? Are they part of Kryta?
We are sons and daughters of Ascalon. Jennah is our ally—but not our Queen.
Talk back option tango.png Very interesting. May I ask something else?
Talk end option tango.png Thanks for your time, Commander.
Talk end option tango.png Thanks for your time, Commander.

After securing the first area:

Commander Samuelsson: The road is secure! Vanguard, form up and hold this area. We'll advance toward the crossing.

After securing the second area:

Commander Samuelsson: The crossing is secure! Vanguard, defend us here. We'll take care of the troublemakers in the square.

At the square:

Gram Skullsplitter: I could slaughter you like a pig.
Gram Skullsplitter: Kill the traitors!

Cinematic after the battle:

Commander Samuelsson: Your timing was perfect, Warmaster Kernsson. I can't thank you enough.
Commander Samuelsson: The Renegades are getting bolder. This is the first time they've ever tried to bomb the fortress from the inside.
Warmaster Forgal Kernsson: New tactics may signify a new leader. You think they finally found a shot-caller with half a brain?
Commander Samuelsson: Think it? I know it. He's a charr named Ajax Anvilburn, and that rotter's a thorn in my side.
<Character name>: Do you know anything about Anvilburn? Some way we could track him down and stop him?
Commander Samuelsson: Scouts tell us the Renegades have a camp outside Ebonhawke, but my troops are tied up defending the treaty location.
Commander Samuelsson: The Ebon Vanguard hasn't had a chance to check it, but if I had to guess, I'd say he's either there or his soldiers are.
Warmaster Forgal Kernsson: We'll take a look, Commander. Ill-disciplined thugs like these should be easy to find.

Speaking to your allies after the battle:

Commander Samuelsson: We need to hurry — those charr are causing devastation.
Talk more option tango.png Hang on, who are you?
My name's Commander Samuelsson, and I am the Duke of Ebonhawke.
Talk more option tango.png By what authority do you hold this city?
My forefathers were the kings of Ascalon, and I'll be damned if I let those renegades destroy their last legacy!
Talk end option tango.png Understood, Commander. We'll do all we can.
Talk end option tango.png Nice to meet you, Commander.
Talk end option tango.png You're right. Let's move.
Gate Assistant Feddr: My name is Private Feddr, and that was amazing. Without you, we'd have been crushed!
Talk end option tango.png You're welcome, Feddr.
Gate Operator Stebben: Hurrah for the Vigil! My name's Stebben. We couldn't have done it without you.
Talk more option tango.png Stebben? Isn't that an odd name for an asura?
After my parents died in a bizarre hot glue incident, I was raised by humans. You have a problem with that?
Talk end option tango.png No. No problem here.
Talk end option tango.png I do my best. Thanks!

My story[edit]

A Fragile Peace.jpg

I received a letter from Warmaster Forgal, a member of the Vigil. I'm to meet with him and the general at Fort Marriner.

General Almorra has asked me to assist Warmaster Forgal on a mission to Ascalon, where the treaty at Ebonhawke is in jeopardy from renegades. The Vigil wants the peace to succeed.

I assisted Warmaster Forgal and saved Ebonhawke from invading charr renegades.

Notes[edit]

  • Upon completion an Emblem of the Vigil is placed in your personal story tab of the Hero panel.
  • Like all other Personal Story instances taking place in Lion's Arch, this story step utilizes the original 1325 AE appearance, not the modern look. There is also a sepia tone added with post-processing.
